Ce nouvel ouvrage de Jean-Philippe et Dominique Lenclos explore l’étonnante diversité des décors de façade et poursuit la recherche que ces auteurs ont engagée depuis les années 1960 sur la « géographie de la couleur » dans l’habitat vernaculaire. L’ornementation de la façade prend des aspects très différents d’un lieu à l’autre, d’un pays à l’autre, selon les matériaux employés, la morphologie architecturale et les goûts des habitants, qui expriment leur savoir-faire et leur créativité, mais aussi leur identité, sur les murs de leur maison. La plupart des décors naissent spontanément de l’utilisation des matériaux disponibles sur place et de leur mise en œuvre spécifique. La terre humide se prête aisément à toutes sortes d’incisions, de dessins, de motifs en relief, d’incrustations et, quand elle est sèche, au revêtement d’enduits ou de peintures de couleur. Le bois est sculpté, découpé ou peint. La brique et la pierre enrichissent les façades des nuances de leurs teintes et de leurs textures, ainsi que du dessin de leur assemblage. Enfin, la céramique peut donner lieu à de savantes compositions colorées, abstraites ou figuratives. This manual analyzes contemporary urban phenomena in economic growth regions using the Ethiopian capital city of Addis Abeba as an example, and presents a catalogue of sustainable strategies for city planning practice in the Second and Third Worlds. In the process, it provides planners with generally applicable methods and tools that are usable at the design stage and equip them to develop and deploy dynamic planning and project management processes. To this end, it illuminates such topical subjects as the changing agrarian and industrial landscape, the activation of urban wastelands, and the increasing density of urban hubs. Carolyn Dean focuses on rock outcrops masterfully integrated into Inka architecture, exquisitely worked masonry, and freestanding sacred rocks, explaining how certain stones took on lives of their own and played a vital role in the unfolding of Inka history. Examining the multiple uses of stone, she argues that the Inka understood building in stone as a way of ordering the chaos of unordered nature, converting untamed spaces into domesticated places, and laying claim to new territories. Dean contends that understanding what the rocks signified requires seeing them as the Inka saw them: as potentially animate, sentient, and sacred. Through careful analysis of Inka stonework, colonial-period accounts of the Inka, and contemporary ethnographic and folkloric studies of indigenous Andean culture, Dean reconstructs the relationships between stonework and other aspects of Inka life, including imperial expansion, worship, and agriculture. She also scrutinizes meanings imposed on Inka stone by the colonial Spanish and, later, by tourism and the tourist industry.

Through a study of Delhi, the author challenges some prevalent dichotomies and myths in architecture and urbanism and identifies an interpretation of modernism that expands upon conventional understandings of it. Conventional discourse in the West defines modern as the antithesis of that which is 'not-modern' or is 'traditional.' Many scholars have debated the significance of the words and most agree that the very word 'tradition' was a modernist creation that variously implied backwardness, threatened by change, resistance to innovation. The first part of this book reflects on the transformations and discontinuities in built form and spatial culture and calls into question accepted notions of the static nature of what is normally referred to as 'traditional' and 'non-Western' architecture. The second part is a critical discussion of Delhi in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It expands upon conventional understandings of modernity in a way that wrenches free the city's architecture and the society from the objectified realm of the exotic while also acknowledging cultural conditions of modernity and modern architecture outside the West. Stepping outside Western canons, this project looks at late nineteenth and early twentieth century architecture to include them in a conversation on architecture that has typically focused on Western Europe and North America. Finally, the author seeks out the 'indigenous modernities': the irregular, the uneven, and the unexpected in what uncritical observers might label a perfectly coherent 'traditional' built environment; or in the influence of local society and institutions on forms that appear modern by conventional standards in the West.
