Résumé:
"Museum Studies: An Anthology of Contexts" provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary collection of approaches to museums and their relation to history, culture, philosophy and their adoring or combative publics. This book brings together for the first time a wide array of texts that mix contemporary analysis with historical documentation. It includes five sections that highlight central themes in museum studies: issue-oriented contexts in museology; states of "nature"; the status of nations; history, memory and other locations; and arts, crafts and visitors. It also addresses the development of museums, the role of the museum in society, and issues central to contemporary museum studies opening with an introductory essay that situates museum studies in a truly interdisciplinary context and including an opening essay for each section that guides the reader through the selections. Finally, the anthology includes a bibliography and list of resources devoted to museum studies that makes the volume an authoritative guide on the subject.

Résumé:
Designer and architect Keiji Ashizawa is deeply influenced by the principles of 20th-century modernism, carrying on its spirit through user-friendly design in the everyday lives of people. Whether it be furniture or architectural design, his rational disassembling of objects into smaller elements reflects shared mutual spatial and structural concepts, despite differences in proportion and dimensions. Ashizawa combines the Arts and Crafts movement and the design-manufacture process of mass production in his quest for honest design, viewed through a 21st-century, neo-modernist lens. This book presents his prolific vision, from furniture and objects to interiors and homes.

Résumé:
“Architects, sculptors, painters, we all must return to the crafts!” declared architect Walter Gropius in his Bauhaus manifesto. Founded in 1919 as an art school in Weimar, the Bauhaus established itself as a major influence on twentieth- century art and design. Bauhaus students were taught by some of the most celebrated artists of the time, including Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger, and Wassily Kandinsky. Having moved to Berlin in 1932 under architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, it was forced to close for good by the Gestapo in 1933. Uncovering the sources of inspiration that brought the Bauhaus into existence, from medieval cathedrals of Europe and Hokusai prints to William Morris and Arts and Crafts, The Spirit of the Bauhaus explores workshops and courses in detail, illustrating the extraordinary wealth of experimentation in every medium: ceramics, wood and metalwork, textiles, glass- painting, sculpture, mural, printing and binding, theater, architecture, and photography. This essential and accessible guide to the Bauhaus, published in time for the 100th anniversary of the school in 2019, celebrates a school that continues to be recognized as the most durable and influential source of modern ideas about art, design, and craft.

Résumé:
''Duodji Reader'' is a selection of twelve essays on duodji by Sámi duojárat and writers from the past 60 years. The craft practices of Indigenous peoples from all over the world have been getting increased attention and appreciation globally over the last few decades. It has also become a topic that has occupied its fair share of discourse in academia and in art education. As a contribution to this interest in Indigenous art and crafts practices, we offer this book on Sámi duodji. Duodji is the artistic crafts form of the Indigenous people of the European Arctic. Duodji refers not only to the end result, the finished object itself, but also describes the whole process - from the incipient idea to the final product. Duodji demonstrates a holistic circle of creation, how nature and humans collaborate in recognising, visualising, and shaping items that serve the need for both practical use and aesthetic form. ''Duodji reader: Twelve essays on duodji by Sámi writers'' is produced by Sámi Allaskuvla and Norwegian Crafts. The publication is edited by the professors Gunvor Guttorm and Harald Gaski, and contains essays from eleven prominent Sámi scholars, duojárat, and writers from North, South, and Lule Sámi areas. The essays are presented in Lule, South or North Sámi as well as in English. The publication also contains a wide-ranging selection of photographs of duodji by more than thirty contemporary duojárat. The book is well-suited both as background and text material for education in crafts, as well as a resource for the theory and practice of Sámi duodji as an Indigenous art form with long roots in the Arctic North.

Résumé:
For over a century, "Country Life" magazine has been influential in the world of garden design. Since 1897, its superbly illustrated essays on houses and gardens sought to inform and educate taste. Drawing from the unrivalled photographic archives of "Country Life", this magnificent volume charts the challenges, changes, and surprises of English garden design throughout the last century. The story begins with Arts and Crafts gardens, typified by herbaceous borders and modern planting, and it continues with the Edwardian debate between formality and "wild" gardening, inter-war grandeur, postwar practicality, and pioneering artists' gardens. Beautifully illustrated with 200 colour and duotone photographs, this is an illuminating survey of an outstanding century of British garden-making.

Résumé:
The Domestic Scene reveals Niedecken as a forward-looking designer influenced by European Art Nouveau and Secessionist design as well as by the Arts and Crafts Movement. Cheryl Robertson focuses on three examples of Niedecken’s commissions and an article by Niedecken himself (reprinted in this volume) to explore the evolving relationship between architect, interior designer, and client in the first quarter of the twentieth century. This expanded second edition includes updated photography, additional color images, and an essay by John C. Eastberg that deepens our understanding of Niedecken’s career by presenting his lesser-known work in the context of Milwaukee’s artistic and social history. Niedecken worked also in the Colonial and Renaissance Revival modes, and these works illustrate his versatility as a designer and entrepreneur.

Résumé:
Many people think modernist architecture never flowered in California north of the San Fernando Valley. "NorCalMod" dispels that notion in an illustrated history showcasing examples of its contribution to the Bay Area and environs. As a style, modernist architecture was hotly debated in its day (why create modern structures where such distinctive Victorian and Arts and Crafts buildings already existed?) pulling heavyweights such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Lewis Mumford, and Walter Gropius into the fray. Ultimately, that existing "Bay Region Style" would remain the area's architectural hallmark, but not before hundreds of important modernist projects, many still standing yet unjustly neglected today, had been established. The photos in this book open our eyes to a long-lost chapter in the history of California architecture.

Résumé:
Beginning with his studies at the photographic department of the School of Arts and Crafts in Bratislava, this book shows how, in the mid-1970s, Podstrasky began to work as freelancer and his photos appeared in newspapers and magazines. He rarely participated in the activities of the photographic community and the whole of his work remained practically unknown to the expert and general public and only recently did it become obvious that he was one of few Slovak photographers to succeed in fully capturing the other face of life during “real socialism”—the final phase of development of the communist system before its ultimate decline. This biography details Podstrasky’s ability to record gloominess, helplessness, and personal and social resignation and stands as a testament to the artist’s important place in the history of photography.
