Résumé:
Feeding kids can often feel like climbing a mountain, and sometimes like an endless series of rejections and failures. With picky eating preferences changing at every turn, meals that were a mainstay one week are inexplicably pushed aside when they hit the table the next. Because kids don't care about what they're serving at the new It Restaurant, the food fads of the year or how long you spend in the kitchen—either they like what they're eating ... or they’ll let you know about it! But surely chefs, with all of their accolades, awards and years of experience don't go through this too ... do they? What food writer Joanna Fox discovered might surprise you. It turns out we’re all in the same boat, even Canada’s top culinary professionals from coast to coast. Inside ''Little critics'', you'll find out how our top chefs please even the most suspicious, judgmental or fastidious of early eaters, with recipes including Jeremy Charles’s go-to stew, Suzanne Barr’s Cauliflower Cheese Bake, Susur Lee’s favourite childhood chicken, Danny Smiles’s Italian family dinner, Dyan Solomon’s Green Hulk Risotto, Vikram Vij’s Butter Chicken Schnitzel, Ryusuke Nakagawa’s Cheesy Chicken Katsu, Billy Alexander’s Frybread Stuffed Pizza, Chuck Hughes’s Pappardelle Pesto and Michael Smith’s showstopper pancakes, Tara O’Brady’s hearty Oatmeal Waffles, and Anna Olson’s Gourmet Goo Skillet Brownies. ''Little critics'' is chock-full of ideas for every kind of meal, with easy-to-follow recipes for breakfast and brunch; vegetarian, fish and meat mains; soups, snacks and sides; and desserts and drinks too. With food this good, even the adults will be asking for more.

Résumé:
Since the first edition of "Edible Estates : Attack on the Front Lawn" was published in 2008, interest in edible gardening has exploded across the United States and abroad. This greatly expanded second edition of the book documents the eight Edible Estates regional prototype gardens that author Fritz Haeg has planted in California, Kansas, Texas, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and England, and includes personal accounts from the homeowner-gardeners about the pleasures and challenges of publicly growing food where they live. Ten "Reports from Coast to Coast" tell the stories of others who have planted their own edible front yards in towns and cities across the country. In addition to essays by landscape architect and scholar Diana Balmori, edible-landscaping pioneer Rosalind Creasy, bestselling author and sustainable-food advocate Michael Pollan and artist and writer Lesley Stern, this edition features updated text by Haeg (including his observations on the Obama White House vegetable garden); a contribution from Mannahatta author Eric W. Sanderson; and Growing Power founder, MacArthur Fellow and urban farmer Will Allen's never-before-published Declaration of the Good Food Revolution. This is not a comprehensive how-to book, nor a showcase of impossibly perfect gardens. The stories presented here are intended to reveal something about how we are living today and to inspire readers to plant their own versions of an Edible Estate. If we see that our neighbor's typical grassy lawn instead can be a beautiful food garden, perhaps we will begin to look at the city around us with new eyes. Our private land can be a public model for the world in which we would like to live.

Résumé:
One glimpse of the cascading steel beams mirrored in the reflecting pond and it's clear that the Hugo and Brigitte Eppich house is a singular achievement, a daring experiment that embodies Erickson's West Coast modernist ideas about site, material, and form. Erickson's first steel residence explores both the structural and aesthetic possibilities of the material, with curved beams, dyed cladding, and milled furnishings designed by Francisco Kripacz- features that would have been near-impossible on a regular commission. But after seeing the first Eppich House, built for Hugo's twin brother Helmut, Hugo entrusted Erickson with creating and furnishing the entire house, inside and out- another first for Erickson- and made available the Eppic brothers' steel fabricating plants, which built virtually every component of the home.

Résumé:
Created during a month-long journey across the central Andes in early 2020—at a moment when the pandemic frozed the world, Altitude emerged from a road trip of more than 8,000 kilometers through one of the most extreme and arid regions on Earth. Traveling mostly above 3,000 meters, from Mendoza and the slopes of Aconcagua to the salt flats of Uyuni and the Pacific coast of Chile, Gian Paolo Minelli transformed this demanding expedition into a slow, meditative photographic investigation. Rejecting both reportage and spectacular landscape imagery, Minelli chose to work with a large-format analog camera, embracing slowness, attention, and material presence. His gaze turns downward, toward the ground itself: fractured soils, dried riverbeds, lava crusts, salt plains, wind-polished stones, and sparse xerophytic vegetation.

Résumé:
This monograph discusses the role that ruins play in urban centers in terms of their meaning, testimony, and value, and the opportunities they provide. After an outline of historical and contemporary of approaches, with a special analysis of British and Italian approaches, Elisa Pilia puts forward a methodology for the investigation of the strategic values of such artifacts, and ideas for their potential contribution to a sustainable requalification of historic urban cores. The protocol is tested on the historical center of Cagliari, a mid-sized port city on the southern coast of the island of Sardinia, Italy, where the remains left by aerial bombardment during the Second World War are still a dramatic part of the controversial European debate on how to reuse ruins.

Résumé:
In Dirt Meridian, Andrew Moore takes to the air to document the High Plains of North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska in a series of large-format photographs. The "meridian" of the title refers to the 100th meridian, the longitude that neatly bisects the US and has long been considered the dividing line between the East and West. Much of the meridian traverses America's so-called flyover country, those sparsely populated landscapes between the urban centers on either coast. Other parts of the meridian cross contentious zones such as the heavily fracked Bakken formation in North Dakota. Dirt Meridian interweaves two stories: the myths and history of the vast, severe American High Plains alongside portraits of the people who live there today.

Résumé:
Dobrovic in Dubrovnik traces the history of a project of avant-garde modern architecture constructed in the 1930s in the Mediterranean landscape of the south Dalmatian coast of the Adriatic Sea. Architects Krunoslav Ivaniin and Ljiljana Blagojevic contribute comprehensive historical, theoretical and phenomenological readings of a highly specific venture in modern architecture (though with the usual universal aspirations)--the quintessentially modern villas, gardens and hotels built in Dubrovnik 70 years ago by the Serbian architect and urban planner Nikola Dobrovic (1897-1967). Confined to an area of about ten square miles and in use for only about ten years, the buildings are presented in this volume through previously unpublished original design drawings, black-and-white photographs from the 1930s and contemporary color photographs by Wolfgang Thaler.

Résumé:
For hundreds of years, the shorefront of Manhattan Island served as the country’s center of trade, shipping, and commerce. With its maritime links across the oceans, along the Atlantic coast, and inland to the Midwest and New England, Manhattan became a global city and home to the world’s busiest port. It was a world of docks, ships, tugboats, and ferries, filled with cargo and freight, a place where millions of immigrants entered the Promised Land. In "Waterfront Manhattan", Kurt C. Schlichting tells the story of the Manhattan waterfront as a struggle between public and private control of New York’s priceless asset. Nature provided New York with a sheltered harbor but presented the city with a challenge: to find the necessary capital to build and expand the maritime infrastructure.

Résumé:
Over the course of a career that spanned forty-five years, William Wilson Wurster (1895–1973) designed hundreds of residences up and down the West Coast. Like Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, with whom Wurster maintained a close professional exchange, Wurster blends modernism with the vernacular. Wurster described these homes as "frames for living": spaces that could be fully transformed by the occupant to meet their needs and desires, well-designed canvases for homemaking. Authors Caitlin Lempres Brostrom, AIA, and Richard C. Peters, FAIA, draw upon extensive historical research as well as personal relationships with Wurster to tell the story of his career, including both residential and institutional building. The Houses of William Wurster features new and archival footage of thirty-three of the architect's best-known houses and includes a foreword by Donlyn Lyndon.
