Résumé:
Over the course of eight days in December 2021, Danny Fox and Kingsley Ifill travelled across the length of the British Isles and back again. Setting off from near Dover, Kent, and making their way up the east coast as far as the Isle of Skye, Scotland, to then return by way of the West Midlands, Wales and many others locations on route. With no predetermined course, their journey was one of intuition and self-led discovery, encountering and documenting the reality of the British landscape unfurling ahead of them. Composed of a series of fifty collaborative works on paper which bring together photography by Ifill and paintings by Fox, ''Holy island'' is a visual travelogue of their time spent together: an exploration into the cross-section of rural and urban fabric that makes up Britain today.

Résumé:
Since the mid-19th century, the idea of California has lured many waves of migrants. Here, writer and editor Lyra Kilston explores a less examined attraction: the region’s promise of better health. From ailing families seeking a miracle climate cure to iconoclasts and dropouts pursuing a remedy to societal corruption, the abundance of sunshine and untamed nature around the small but growing Los Angeles area offered them refuge and inspiration. In the wild west of medical practice, eclectic nature-cure treatments gained popularity. The source for this trend can be traced to the mountains and cold-water springs of Europe, where early sanatoriums were built to offer the natural cures of sun, air, water and diet; this sanatorium architecture was exported to the West Coast from Central Europe, and began to impact other types of building.

On the rocky coast of the Côte d'Azur perches a crisp, white modern home, elongated and compact, cryptically called ''E.1027''. The Anglo-Irish designer Eileen Gray (1878–1976) bought the site, paid for the construction and designed the building (with the assistance of her close friend, Jean Badovici, to whom Gray gave the site, building and contents). It was Gray's first foray into architecture, and as such it was a manifesto. For Gray, the whole building—the structure, its materials, the color scheme, the windows, the hardware, the fittings, the furniture—was an experiment with new concepts of spatial relations, an attempt to create an architecture of lightness and freedom. This new publication finally places this key example of modern architecture in its rightful position in history, contextualizing the structure with essays, reproductions of archival material, photographs and numerous scale drawings.

Résumé:
In the heady and hallucinogenic days of the 1960s and '70s, a diverse range of artists and creative individuals based in the American West -from the Pacific coast to the Rocky Mountains and the Southwest - broke the barriers between art and lifestyle and embraced the new, hybrid sensibilities of the countercultural movement. In "West of Center," Elissa Auther and Adam Lerner bring together a prominent group of scholars to elaborate the historical and artistic significance of these counterculture projects within the broader narrative of postwar American art, which skews heavily toward New York's avant-garde art scene. A companion to an exhibition originating at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, this book illuminates how, in the western United States, the counterculture's unique integration of art practices, political action, and collaborative life activities serves as a linchpin connecting postwar and contemporary artistic endeavors.

Résumé:
The first volume in a new series on critical concerns in the history of American art, 'Picturing' brings together essays by scholars who discuss the creation and consumption of images from the early modern period through the end of the twentieth century. Some of the contributions focus on art critical texts, like Gertrude Stein’s portrait of Cézanne, while others have as their point of departure particular artworks, from a portrait of Benjamin Franklin to Eadweard Muybridge’s nineteenth-century photographs of the California Coast. Works that addressed images and image making were not confined to the academy; they spilled out into poetry, literature, theater, and philosophy, and the essays’ considerations likewise range freely, from painting to natural history illustrations, travel narratives, and popular fiction. Together, the contributions demonstrate a rich deliberation that thoroughly debunks the notion that American art is merely derivative of a European tradition.

Résumé:
In the second volume of Mark Ruwedel’s epic study of the landscapes of Los Angeles, the artist heads to the coast – the furthest edge of the basin’s sprawl before it meets the Pacific Ocean. These absorbing and layered photographs suggest extremes of many kinds: the far reaches of urbanisation, the dramatic geographies of desert and sea, the boundless ambitions of empire, and the spiralling climate conditions that most recently have seen these areas devastated by fires. Charting a hundred-mile route from Point Mugu, north of Malibu, down to the Bolsa Chica Wetlands of Orange County, Ruwedel studies a range of intricately textured landscapes, woven with the traces of decades of human intervention and the countervailing forces of nature and time. His large-format black-and-white photography recalls iconic photographer-cartographers of the nineteenth century while calling into question the taxonomic certainty and implicit politics of their surveying projects.

The 2020 murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis led to the closure of the Tate Britain restaurant in London, which had advertised its 55-foot-long racist mural from the 1920s as "the most amusing room in Europe" Suddenly it was obvious. Flooded by Mail introduces strategies of antihegemonic amateur collecting and examines why the killing of a Black man by U.S. police in public implicates us in Europe. A number of objects found online are useful for this task: the trial minting of a coin commemorating the collapse of the Cologne City Archive that never entered circulation, a board game from a 1932 German film, stock photos and generic copperplate engravings from the same family over centuries, Köllnflocken trading cards, postcards from a wall in Morocco, a procession in Cologne and a possessed harbor in Spain, and a 1970s conceptualist installation with postcards of rough seas along the British coast.

Résumé:
Canadian architect Fred Hollingsworth designed his first house in 1946. Since then he has created some of the most innovative homes of the twentieth century. Hollingsworth's home designs incorporate an open floor plan and a keen observance of the flow between the inside and outside environment. Using natural materials with an emphasis on texture and natural lighting, Hollingsworth is one of the few modernist architects who look wholly to organic form as the basis of their design aesthetic. "Living spaces" is a detailed monograph on Hollingsworth's career, revealing how he and a handful of visionary architects pioneered the acclaimed "West Coast Style" and helped establish modern ideals of structure and utility. Through full-page images, architectural plans, and text from the artist himself, this book follows an acclaimed architect from his early days to his most recent achievements that show his continued commitment to innovation.

// ''The whisper'' is Félicia Atkinson's new artist's book, bringing together photographs, drawings and poems. They revolve around the eponymous installation located on the pointe d'Agon, on the west coast in Normandy. On a dune acquired by the artist for the Conservatoire du Littoral, stands a pierced wooden sculpture. Around this sculpture, inside this wild dune and facing the sea, the walker is invited to become a whisperer, and listen to what surrounds him.

Résumé:
In recent years, Brazil has discovered vast quantities of petroleum deep within its territorial waters, inciting the construction of a series of cities along its coast and in the ocean. We could term these developments as Petropolises, or cities formed from resource extraction. The Petropolis of Tomorrow is a design and research project, originally undertaken at Rice University that examines the relationship between resource extraction and urban development in order to extract new templates for sustainable urbanism. Organized into three sections: Archipelago Urbanism, Harvesting Urbanism, and Logistical Urbanism, which consist of theoretical, technical, and photo articles as well as design proposals, The Petropolis of Tomorrow elucidates not only a vision for water-based urbanism of the floating frontier city, it also speculates on new methodologies for integrating infrastructure, landscape, urbanism and architecture within the larger spheres of economics, politics, and culture that implicate these disciplines.
