Résumé:
In this volume Peter Calthorpe, renowned West Coast town planner and author, presents the case for New Urbanism, a movement that has enjoyed meteoric success since he co-founded it in the early 1990s. More utopian and civic than Everyday Urbanism, it promotes mixed-use and transit-oriented development and redevelopment of our cities, as well as walkability and socio-economic diversity. Less avant-garde than Post Urbanism, it embraces traditional urban and architectural scale and typologies. Lars Lerup, Dean of the School of Architecture at Rice University and author, responds with counter-arguments and case studies in a passionate but constructive exchange. Historian Robert Fishman, Professor of Architecture and Urban Planning at Taubman College and the author of several seminal books on urbanism, introduces and moderates the discussion, and offers a postscript. This compelling and insightful publication, with scores of images, features timely topics for architects, urban planners and designers, developers, government officials, landscape architects, students, and citizens interested in the fate of their urban environment.

Résumé:
There is an almost elemental appeal in the rural fishing villages of Nova Scotia, Maine, and Newfoundland. Their intimate connection to nature, to the land, water, and (often harsh) weather; their reliance on ingenuity, on-hand materials, and craftsmanship; and their values of thrift and endurance serve as inspiration and as touchstones for those of us caught up in the hubbub of modern life. "Tilting" is a celebration of all these virtues and an eclectic documentation of the buildings, landscape, and lifestyle of this remote community on a small island far off the Canadian coast. Through photographs, firsthand historical anecdotes, and delicate pencil drawings, author Robert Mellin presents a personal account of Tilting's houses, outbuildings, furniture, tools, fences, and docks, and, in the process, the way of life of Tilting. Mellin describes how houses are built for mobility and then "launched," or moved; how houses are detailed and constructed; how cabbage houses are built out of overturned boats; and the difference between picket, paling, and riddle fences.

Résumé:
How does a house shape experience? How does architecture establish a practice of living? Architect Sebastiano Brandolini invites readers on a meditative tour of his family’s house on the Sardinian coast, describing everything from the geology of the rocks beneath, to the history of the surrounding villages, to the way the shifting light measures the day. More than the story of a single summer home written by an accomplished architect, this is a study of how place, the built environment, and daily practice make up our lives, at the most minute level of detail. Recalling the essays of Walter Benjamin, Bill Bryson, Rebecca Solnit, and Lawrence Weschler, Brandolini’s writing weaves literature, art history, and the transformation of Sardinia since the 1960s into a single fabric. "The House at Capo d’Orso" is not only a study of architecture and life in the built environment, but of family life, and the way the Brandolini family adapted themselves to the house they built.

Résumé:
Florian Maier-Aichen's photographs portray the natural, industrial and cultural landscape with stylized eccentricity. By using the tropes of documentary photography in unconventional ways, Maier-Aichen creates sublime images rich with reference and allusion. His photographs of the California coast, the Alps and other tourist destinations are openly beautiful and seductive in their rich hues and expansive viewpoints. However, these and other images of melting cathedrals, failed industry and tragic ghost ships are nuanced with a subtle disquiet and ensuing criticality. Born in Stuttgart, Germany, and educated at the University of California, Los Angeles, Maier-Aichen begins with a traditional large-format image that he captures on film. He then applies a myriad of creative adjustments to each component that become building blocks for intricate and layered compositions. This succinct paperback contains color reproductions of new and recent works, documentary images of Maier-Aichen's process, and an essay by MOCA curator Rebecca Morse.

Résumé:
The Open Call in Flanders (the Dutch-speaking, northern part of Belgium) is more than just another architecture competition: any governmental agency or public institution can choose to work with an Open Call for any given construction project. Since its invention by the first Flemish Government Architect Bob Van Reeth in 2000, more than 700 assignments have been published in this procedure, resulting in almost 350 completed public architectural and infrastructural projects so far. This volume compiles 70 of these, from all over Flanders—from its west coast to the Dutch border in the east—to illustrate the astounding quality of these projects. They prove that public architecture can be daring, thought-provoking, cooperative, and well-done at the same time. The book takes an extensive look at how this procedure works, how it is received by architects, politicians, and clients—and ultimately, at the outstanding public architecture in Flanders as an example for other countries to study closely.

Résumé:
This publication brings together a range of private homes built since the 1950s in Salento, in the area to the south of Lecce: single and double-family dwellings which, in terms of quality and variety, represent a unique example of spontaneity and aesthetic anarchy on the Italian architectural panorama. The study is carried out with the contribution of three photographers and two historians of architecture, and examines a highly peculiar phenomenon from an unusual perspective. In Southern Salento, in the area lying between Capo di Santa Maria di Leuca, Porto Cesareo on the Ionian Sea and San Foca on the Adriatic coast, house construction is founded on a solid craft tradition which, in open contrast with any institutional architectural school, has led to the rise of eccentric, free and fluid approaches to architecture. Investigating private living and its relation to public space, the volume opens a broader reflection on taste, celebrating its variety and imaginative scope.

Résumé:
In 1975 Bas Jan Ader disappeared at sea while trying to sail from the East Coast of the United States to Europe as part of a project titled In Search of the Miraculous. The circumstances of his disappearance have led many interpreters to identify Ader (as a person) with the role of the tragic romantic hero. The cult status of the artist as a hero whose work is authenticated through his death, however, has obscured the fact that Ader's art was a critical investigation of precisely those romantic motives his persona has now come to be identified with. This book unpicks these ties in Ader's work in order to highlight the specific and unique way in which Ader explores the existential and emotional with an artistic approach that is as conceptual and analytic as it is poetic and personal. Jan Verwoert lives in Hamburg and works as a freelance writer. He is a member of the advisory board of the Kunstverein Munich and Guest Professor of Contemporary Art and Theory at the Academy of Umeå.

Résumé:
Ed Ruscha initially gained attention in the early 1960s with paintings, drawings, and photgraphic books that focused on his fascination with the unique culture, vernacular, and sensibility of his adopted home of Los Angeles. Ruscha has been considered a 'West Coast' artist, and although Los Angeles is undeniably the source of inspiration for his art, the themes he addresses are far-reaching and universal. A growing interest in Ruscha's work in recent years has led to major exhibitions that toured the United States, and a number of individual shows in Europe, which re-evaluate his art in the broader scope. This monograph on Ruscha's work looks at the prolific and many-faceted career of an artist whose work has been variously described as pop, conceptual, or surrealist a painter as well as a print-, book-, and filmmaker. The thematic and loosely chronological structure of the book brings to light the diversity and depth of Ruscha's art, while at the same time underlining the continuity and recurrence of themes and ideas within his ever surprising and prolific career.

Résumé:
For the past decade, photographer Mark Ruwedel has been compiling an epic photographic account of the natural environment of his home city of Los Angeles. From the stark Californian coast to the vast expanses of the interior – many of which have been further lain bare by wildfires – Ruwedel tracks a unique ecology in constant, if subtle, dialogue with the human life that surrounds it: one where wildness is designed, contested, permitted, or resisted to varying degrees of success. In this first of four volumes, Ruwedel follows the Los Angeles River from Big Tujunga Wash to the Pacific Ocean. Using patient, forensic large- and medium-format photography in black and white, Ruwedel recalls the legacy of nineteenth-century photographer-cartographers such as Carleton Watkins and Timothy O’Sullivan, as well as land artists and New Topographics photographers of the 1970s, while forging his own elucidating relationship with the landscape. The series title "Landscapes of four ecologies" recalls architectural critic Reyner Baynam classic study "Los Angeles: The architecture of four ecologies," which describes the city as "one of the ecological wonders of the modern world."
