Résumé:
Etymologically the term “intensity” refers to notions of measurement and quantity as well as strength and power depending on the context in which it is used. For this exhibition at Aedes Architecture Forum, the notion of “intensity” becomes the scale applied to architecture. “IntenCity” is articulated around a current and fundamental question: How can an increasing population and the resulting density and intensity be conducted by city planners and architects? As a way to answer this question, four key frames of intensity – history and city planning, architecture, landscape and flux – are used to highlight four projects: Espace Claude Monet in Rouen (2012), Pôle de commerces et de loisirs Confluence in Lyon (2012), Muse – Quartier de l’Amphithéâtre (2017) and Europea-Neo in Brussels (2025).

Résumé:
The book serves as a catalogue for the exhibition "As Found", on showcase from 6 september 2023 to 17 March 2024 in DE SINGEL, Antwerp. The exhibition focuses on the new relationship between contemporary design and heritage. Using experimental, groundbreaking, (inter)national examples, the exhibition explores the different positions that contemporary designers adopt in relation to existing buildings. Architecture in Flanders and Brussels reflects a unique position in dealing with the existing built environment. Although the experimental approaches vary with different design methodologies, the audacity of the interventions remains, whether it is a medieval structure or a twentieth-century building. This book focuses on seven experimental approaches in preservation today: ensemble, void, reconfiguration, inside out, traces, mirror and nuance. These are explored through essays, realized projects and international references.

Résumé:
Since 2007, American photographer Jade Doskow has been documenting the remains of World’s Fair sites, once iconic global attractions that have often been repurposed for less noble aspirations or neglected and fallen into decay. Lost Utopias brings together the substantial body of work that Doskow has completed over the past decade, including iconic monuments such as the Seattle Space Needle, the Eiffel Tower, Brussels’ Palais des Expositions and New York’s Unisphere. Doskow’s large-scale colour photographs poignantly illustrate the utopian architecture and art that has surrounded the World’s Fairs, across both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Presented in a handsome, large-scale hardback book, Doskow’s work carries a unique sense of both grandeur and dreaminess, whilst also reflecting upon the often temporary purposes that these structures once held.

Résumé:
This volume investigates the role of architecture, taking the Tracé Royal (the royal route) in Brussels as an example of an urban figure. The succession of emblematic streets, running from the Palace of Justice in the heart of the city to the Church of Our Lady and the Royal Domain in Laeken, is home to several of Belgium’s national political, legal, religious, financial, and cultural institutions. The book explores the strategies put in place over time by the various institutions to inscribe themselves durably on the country’s social order, revealing similar spatial responses and surprisingly common mutation processes. And it highlights the importance of architecture when it comes to inventing new relationships with institutional spaces in order to live together better in a time when social, political, and cultural reference points are being blurred.

Résumé:
This book discusses the architectural influence that Japan and the West have had on each other during the last 150 years. While the recent histories of Western and Japanese architecture have been well recorded, they have rarely been interwoven. Based on extensive research, this book provides a synthetic overview that brings together the main themes of Japanese and Western architecture since 1850, showing that neither could exist in its present state without the other. It should be no surprise that the Bank of Japan in Tokyo is based upon the national banks in Brussels and London or that Le Corbusier’s cabanon at Cap Martin in the south of France is based upon an eight mat tatami room. In considering these histories, this book demonstrates the mutual interdependence of both architectural cultures while, at the same time, acknowledging their differences.

Résumé:
In 2006, Amsterdam's 66 East: Centre for Urban Culture organized a project in which artists and architects--including Theo Baart, Bas Princen, Ralph Kämena, Jannes Linders, Jeroen Musch and Hans Werlemann--examined Amsterdam's predominately Arabic and Turkish neighborhood, Indische Buurt, which had recently become home to studios and offices for the creative sector, often seen as the first step in gentrification. Adopting strategies ranging from critical commentary to activist intervention, the project and subsequent exhibition, Houses of Transformation, posits creative alternatives for urban planners, developers and administrators in responding to the inevitable and ongoing problems of urban renewal. This volume documents these strategies and proposals, while also casting a critical eye on similar neighborhoods in other European cities--including Barcelona, Berlin, Budapest, Brussels and London--putting the unique issues of Dutch gentrification into a larger perspective

Résumé:
This book brings together, for the first time, the entire Private Scenes photographic series in which we discover a new dimension of the work of Masahisa Fukase, that of the artist struggling with his medium. This singular corpus is made up of images in which the artist inserts himself. The series is made up of two sets: Letters from Journeys which presents photographs taken in 1989 in different cities around the world (Paris, London, Brussels, Antwerp, etc.), and Private Scenes '92 which focuses on his daily life in Tokyo, where now each print is enhanced with color paints, thus becoming a unique work. This final series bears witness to Fukase's questions about his own practice of photography at the end of his life, and the place of the photographer in his work, when subject and object overlap, also evoking the current practice of the selfie.
