Résumé:
Europe’s new eastern borders stretch from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea: 1.600 heavily guarded kilometers between former “fraternal countries.” The photographers Yann Mingard and Alban Kakulya spent a long time on the road; one of them traveled down from the North and the other up from the South in an effort to document the places and landscapes that mark the end of the Western world. On their journey, they photographed the landscape as well as the border posts with their soldiers and their refugees seized at the frontier, and documented a reality defined in faraway Strasbourg, Brussels, and elsewhere. Explanatory maps and satellite images are juxtaposed in this book with the striking photographs. Articles by political scientists, security experts, sociologists, human rights specialists, and philosophers, as well as literary texts round out this photographic survey of the EU’s Eastern European external borders.

Résumé:
In 1958, Swiss-French architect and urban planner Le Corbusier designed the Philips Pavilion for the World's Fair in Brussels. It is the only building the artist produced for a Dutch client. The unconventional pavilion was the setting for the experimental performance "Le Poème électronique," by avant-garde composer Edgard Varèse, seen by one and a half million visitors. Combining film, color, music and light, this event is regarded as the first multimedia performance for the general public. After its demolition in 1959, the pavilion became an icon of 20th-century art. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam hosts a scale model of the pavilion and also provides the eight-minute soundtrack of "Le Poème électronique." EYE Filmmuseum, also in Amsterdam, has kept the film footage of the performance. This monograph includes a complete overview of the Philips Pavilion, including its history, construction and detailed documentation of "Le Poème électronique."

A Jeff Wall tapestry? Sol LeWitt paneling? Is this some new Target promotion? Actually, those works aren’t for sale to the general public, but are part of architect Charles Vandenhove’s signature philosophy of integrating other artists’ work into his own designs. And it’s one reason he’s gained such acclaim and fame, whether for a new design (the Théâtre des Abbesses in Paris) or one of his numerous renovation projects (La Monnaie Theatre in Brussels). Paneling (a Vandenhove hallmark) reworked by LeWitt, Marthe Wéry, and Jacques Charlier; tapestries conceived by Luc Tuymans as well as Jeff Wall; designs by Daniel Buren and Patrick Corillon: Each work of art finds a niche in Vandenhove’s architecture, creating a deliberate interaction between disciplines. Or as he himself puts it: "As at the time of the Renaissance, I would like the work of artists to be in line with mine; I would like the one not to be able to exist without the other."

Résumé:
The Belgian architecture firm Conix was founded in 1979 and has, in nearly three decades led by Christine Conix, architect Sylvie Bruyninckx and interior designer An Steylaerts, grown to a staff of 55. No other firm is as widely represented along the quays of Antwerp, but that accomplishment doesn't convey the exceptional diversity of their projects, both residential and business. In recent years, Conix has received a great deal of international attention for one project in particular: the just-completed renovation of the midcentury design landmark, the Atomium, in Brussels, a replica of an atom that stands more than 300 feet high, with a different space in each 60-foot sphere, from a children's museum to a restaurant. Conix Architecten features an exceptionally sleek interior design and the book's pages are even edged in silver. With special emphasis on the Atomium, it features a selection of outstanding recent projects in 200 illustrations.

Résumé:
Founded 100 years ago in Vienna, the Wiener Werkstätte "Vienna Workshops" was an idealistic movement to unite the fine and applied arts with the goal of creating beautifully designed and crafted objects for every purpose. Begun by Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, the movement eventually involved hundreds of artists and craftsmen working in architecture, furniture design, tableware, metalwork, ceramics and glass, books, posters, carpets, jewelry, fabrics, and haute couture, not to mention painting and the traditional fine arts. This generously illustrated, compact book offers as complete a record as we are ever likely to see of the group's astonishingly creative work, from complex, integrated environments such as Hoffmann's Palais Stoclet in Brussels and Cabaret Fledermaus in Vienna to individual objects such as enameled glass stemware by Otto Prutscher and vibrantly coloured postcards by Oskar Kokoschka. "Wiener Werkstätte" provides a comprehensive overview of this fascinating movement, one of the high points of modern design history.

Résumé:
The city at night is defined by light. A well-lit urban space can be inviting, giving visitors a sense of well-being and security. A successful nighttime lighting design can also give a city its own identity and accentuate certain architectural qualities. At the same time, an overabundance of light sources can result in light pollution and spatial confusion. In Light Zone City author Christa van Santen uses her many years of experience as a practitioner and teacher of lighting design to articulate basic planning rules for the outdoor lighting of buildings, traffic routes, and squares. In preparation for this guide to urban lighting design, she visited ten European cities—including Paris, Brussels, Berlin, London, Budapest, Vienna, and Amsterdam—with different urban conditions. Light Zone City presents different planning and design tasks systematically and uses each to illustrate specific solutions. Van Santen also explains new artificial lighting systems and outdoor lamps through numerous examples.
