Résumé:
Built in Tokyo in 1961, the Umbrella House is the smallest residential home created by Japanese architect and mathematician Kazuo Shinohara. More than 60 years later, a stroke of good fortune made it possible to save the Umbrella House from demolition and move it to a new location, where it now stands on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, Germany. The wooden house’s post-and-beam construction references traditional Japanese domestic and temple architecture. Experts from Japan and Europe supervised the dismantling of the house in Tokyo and its reassembly in Weil am Rhein. This concise volume traces the long journey of the Umbrella House, in illustrations including impressions from 1960s Japan, architectural designs and plans, and photographs documenting its dismantling and reassembly at its new location. Texts by Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA), Shin-ichi Okuyama and David B. Stewart discuss the Umbrella House against the background of Japanese architectural discourse between 1960 and the present.

Résumé:
Accompanying the first major museum retrospective exhibition of Gego’s work in the US in more than 15 years, this expansive, definitive catalog charts the evolution of Gego’s singular approach to abstraction through organic forms, linear structures and systematic spatial investigations. Featuring nearly 300 images, including more than 160 sculptures, drawings, prints, artist’s books, textiles and installations made between the early 1950s and the early 1990s, this volume also presents 11 illustrated essays by experts in the field of modern and contemporary Latin American art that trace Gego’s artistic development across various mediums and disciplines, including her significant contributions to architecture and design; ground her practice in various art movements that materialized in Latin America, Europe and the US during her lifetime; and consider the pedagogical influence of her two-decade teaching career in Caracas. This essential publication advances an expanded understanding and appreciation of the artist’s work within the context of 20th-century modernism.

"Leaf plan" will illustrate comprehensive design approaches to address climate change, urban metabolism, temporary uses, landscape multifunctionality, cohabitation through new modes of urban design based on criteria of flexibility and adaptability. Trento is the experimental territory where the innovative process, methodologies and theoretical reflection have been tested above the framework of the three-year research project "TUT Trento Urban Transformation". The book is structured around the five challenges (Ecological, Accessible, Smart, Welcoming and Beauty) proposed by the TUT research group for the Trento Leaf Plan, the new metabolic plan for the city of Trento. Beside the innovative field-test experimentations, the holistic methodological approach proposed by the book will be transferable and adapted in other metropolitan contexts to enhance the urban ecological transition. The publication, edited by the TUT research group, will include theoretical essays, critical selection of reference projects, operational tools, and interviews with experts in ecological transition, sustainable mobility, co-design approach, sharing, and urban resilience.

Résumé:
The environmental impacts of construction are momentous. How can architects minimise these by making responsible material choices? Material choices have a global impact. The design and construction industry are responsible for 39% of all carbon emissions in the world. Despite the great desire among architects to address this, it can be difficult to compare materials directly, let alone understand the repercussions of selecting materials for use in different parts of a building or of sourcing them from across the world. Showcasing the latest thought leadership from subject experts across the industry, this primer sets out the various considerations and parameters for specifying a particular material. It empowers architects with the knowledge of which materials are available, how best to use them, and what their future holds as the industry continues to innovate. Each chapter will be devoted to a single material and will consider environmental impacts holistically, looking at health and biodiversity impacts, among other issues.

Résumé:
An extreme weather event hit north-eastern Italy in October 2018. The Sirocco wind blew up to 200 kilometres per hour through the Dolomite valleys, knocking some 14 million trees to the ground. The incessant rain caused torrents to overflow, dragging logs and debris downstream. Overnight, the inhabitants of a number of mountain communities in Trentino,Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia found their cellars flooded and even their houses torn apart by the winds. More than six years later, the consequences of storm Vaia are still visible and tangible. The slopes of various mountains are barren. The remaining forests have been invaded by the spruce bark beetle: a parasite that feeds on wood. Without the plants, there is no protection against landslides and avalanches. While experts and locals are rolling up their sleeves to try and bring the situation back to normal, the total economic damage has been estimated at three billion euros.

Résumé:
"Dutch architects in booming China" presents more than 80 projects (also on show in the exhibition of the same name) which are lavishly illustrated and described in detail. Together, they present a fascinating and unique picture of Dutch design energy for China. Among them are: the State Television in Beijing (Rem Koolhaas, OMA), Guang Dong Museum in Guangzhou (UN Studio), Sleeping Dragon in Hong Kong (Atelier Dutch), Xintian International Kindergarten (NEXT Architects) and Guo Tai Bridge in Tianjin (Verburg Hoogendijk Architecten). The projects are accompanied by four essays, written by China experts. The regional planner Ton Kreukels describes the history of urban development in China. The Shanghai-based architect Kok-Meng Tan discusses Chinese architecture and urbanism at the present moment and takes a look behind the scenes of Chinese architectural practice. Marlies Buurman records the experiences of the more than thirty Dutch offices working in China, and Maarten Kloos gives an introduction to the projects by Dutch architects who are working worldwide.
