Résumé:
The great parks and gardens of Europe come alive by the skillful interplay of natural landscape and architectural elements. Throughout the ages, however, this relationship has been treated in very different ways. The gardens of the Italian renaissance in the 15th or 16th century were based on rational plans, whereas the French parks of the Baroque period seem rather more geometric in design, and the English parklands of the 18th century present a scenic composition. In this publication famous historical gardens from all over Europe are analysed, and these graphic analyses allow us to see into the mind of the designers. By highlighting the design processes, they also function as models for future landscape projects. More than 30 renowned gardens have been examined and documented with a wealth of illustrations. Amongst the parks presented are Palladio’s Villa Emo, the perfect order of the Baroque garden Vaux-le-Vicomte near Paris or the pastoral yet mysterious park of Blenheim Palace near Oxford.

Résumé:
Gilles Clément confronts the homogenizing effects of globalization with the diversity of life. As a trained gardener, he places our current knowledge of plant utilization and ecology in the service of the "planetary garden," in which plant species from a tremendous variety of cultures are collected, composed, and carefully overseen in their development by the landscape designer. Clément has taken this approach, which was developed for private gardens, and worked with celebrated architects – most recently, Jean Nouvel – to apply it in his large city parks, including Parc Citroën, the park at the Grande Arche de La Défense, and the museum park at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris. The high artistic caliber of his designs is attested by exhibitions and installations at the Canadian Centre for Architecture CCA in Montreal and the Centre Pompidou, where they stand beside the work of Daniel Buren, Nan Goldin, and others. Gilles Clément has been presenting his contribution to landscape architecture for decades in more than thirty publications and numerous lectures throughout the world. This is the first comprehensive English-language monograph on his work.

Résumé:
In World’s Fair Gardens, Cathy Jean Maloney offers an exploration of the gardens and grounds of America’s nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century world’s fairs. Maloney describes the landscapes of nine of America’s great fairs from the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia to the 1940 World’s Fair of Tomorrow in New York, many of whose legacies are still evident. The fairs also created an arena for intense competition among nations. Foreign plant introductions included English rhododendrons in Philadelphia, Mexican cacti in New Orleans, and Japanese gardens at nearly all the fairs, a feat considering the formidable challenge of shipping live plants great distances in those times. Maloney also explores innovations from the "glazeless putty system" greenhouse in 1884 and cold storage systems in 1904 to modernistic glass fences in 1940. Complete with more than 50 color and 70 black-and-white illustrations, World’s Fair Gardens will appeal to historians, gardeners, urban planners, landscape architects, public park advocates, preservationists, and anyone interested in the history of these global festivals.
