Résumé:
To propose a botanical garden in one of the world's most rapidly expanding cities is of course a gesture that invokes ecological issues regarding sustainability and the conservation of plant life. The German landscape architect's planning group Valentien intend the garden that they are constructing, for Chenshan (Hill Chen) in the Song Jiang District of Shanghai (just outside the city center), to be such a gesture, as well as a model of plant conservation and scientific research development-and one of Shanghai's most ambitious landmarks. The project is enormous, and informed throughout by the architects' ecological imperatives: Energy-saving technologies are to be utilized in the garden's buildings (greenhouses, laboratories and education center) and renewable materials will be deployed throughout.

Résumé:
'Craft Becomes Modern: The Bauhaus in the Making' looks at the Bauhaus from the perspective of this noisy activity — handcraft. No term was more fiercely disputed there. Although conceived as “laboratories for industry,” a great deal was still done by hand in the Dessau workshops. Workshops at the Bauhaus straddled the different priorities and practical realities at play, falling somewhere between factory and craft business, between free experimentation and industrial contract work. From this field of tension, the Bauhaus tried to define handcraft anew as a utopian pursuit that could coexist with industrial culture. The Bauhaus’ interest in industrialization has been thoroughly studied; the persistence of craft among its teachers and students much less so. Craft Becomes Modern surveys this aspect of the Bauhaus’ teaching and work, and puts it in historical context.

Résumé:
In "Synthetic: How Life Got Made", cultural anthropologist Sophia Roosth reveals how synthetic biologists make new living things in order to understand better how life works. The first book-length ethnographic study of this discipline, "Synthetic" documents the social, cultural, rhetorical, economic, and imaginative transformations biology has undergone in the post-genomic age. Roosth traces this new science from its origins at MIT to start-ups, laboratories, conferences, and hackers’ garages across the United States—even to contemporary efforts to resurrect extinct species. Her careful research reveals that rather than opening up a limitless new field, these biologists’ own experimental tactics circularly determine the biological features, theories, and limits they fasten upon. Exploring the life sciences emblematic of our time, "Synthetic" tells the origin story of the astonishing claim that biological making fosters biological knowing.

Résumé:
Arthur Erickson was one of the 20th century’s premier architects, but little has been written about the man who designed the interiors of Erickson’s award-winning buildings, whom everyone in the business simply called “Francisco”. A decade before his death, Erickson wrote this manuscript to pay tribute to Kripacz and to tell the world of the importance of Francisco’s creations. With stunning images from photographers such as Yousuf Karsh, this book looks at Erickson’s key projects and the crucial contributions made by Kripacz to their feel and glamour. It includes Erickson’s extended commentary on some of his most famous architectural projects from the 1970’s through the 1990s, including Roy Thomson Hall, the Eppich Houses, Napp Laboratories, and the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC., all of which featured interiors by Kripacz.

Résumé:
Treating cities as laboratories of the modern world, Infrastructures of the Urban examines how they are made and how they should be remade. The contributors— scholars and practitioners from architects and sociologists to physicists— bring to bear empirical analysis, ethnography, eyewitness reflections, cultural critique, and manifestos to explore how improving our material and cultural infrastructure can produce a better society. Topics include the World Trade Center memorial, the planning of the London Olympics, the informal redesign of shanty housing by slum residents in Mumbai and Mozambique, and the more formalized construction of highways and “tech-cities” like Sondgu, South Korea. The contributors show how cities are made and remade daily, as well as how the diverse, unexpected agents involved in the process break down the distinction between experts and laypeople.
