Description:
The project series documents the competition entry for the mixed-use tower “El Mirador” in the Bay of Algeciras. The firm was invited to submit their design proposal which won second prize. The competition was organised by the Algeciras City Council. The firm identified this project as number 123. “The project attempts to express, with an architectural gesture, the beauty of the geography of Algeciras: the bay, the port, the Rock and the Straits of Gibraltar, the proximity of Ceuta and Africa, the cork-oak forests that surround the town. For this [Abalos & Herreros] propose a building that, from a single body, opens out into two towers from one great public viewing platform. This form has strategic holes giving onto the more notable topographical features, establishing a physical relationship with them, while the section is organized as a gradient of privacy that increases with height. The competition […] proposed a mixed programme in a posture parallel to the great avenue of the harbour of Algeciras. An evanescent building apparently fragile appears to let one being stimulated by the effects of the climate and the atmospheric phenomenons with an appearance changing with the function of the hours of the day or the season. Its layered section attends ascending to the different landscapes of the city: first public space, second the cities skyline and at last the 360° horizon rising above the city.” (ARCH270975) Abalos & Herreros worked with Ángel Jaramillo, Renata Sentkiewicz, Jakob Hense. Documenting this project are conceptual, design development and presentation drawings, cartographic and graphic materials, and competition records.

The series documents the design of Beaver Lake Pavilion, built for the City of Montréal between 1955 and 1959 as part of the redevelopment of Mount Royal Park. Sise worked with architect Guy Desbarats (1925-2003) on the project. The pavilion was built as part of a larger public works project directed by the City during the 1950s and 1960s during which time many park facilities were built. Beaver Lake Pavilion is recognized to have encouraged a renewal in the architectural forms of public facilities (1). The file contains 43 working drawings which depict every aspect of construction of the pavilion (location plan, floor plans, elevations and sections, as well as numerous detail drawings). Included with the drawings is documentation collected by Sise to support his design, including a topographical map of the park (Mount-Royal - Design Map - 1877), as well as a 1955 book published by the City Planning Department of the City of Montreal (Montreal Master Plan - Open Spaces). This project series documents the Estudo Urbanístico da Lagoinha in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 63/90. The office assigned the date 1995 to this project. The project consisted of an urban study for the area of Lagoinha in Belo Horizonte. The program was based on the idea of improving living conditions for residents in the area and to adapt the urban plan to residents' everyday activities. It included alterations to the infrastructure and the public spaces in order to stimulate cultural activities and the economy of Bairro Lagoinha. In the building program, a particular emphasis was placed on the dialogue between the people and the architects. Documenting this project are studies and plans. Textual materials include project documentation and correspondence. Photo albums and negatives document the project site.

Description:
This project series documents the Helsenki Museum of Contemporary Art. While the records were held in the office’s archives this project was assigned the number 28/90. The office assigned the dates 1992-1993 to this project. For the 75th anniversary of the independence of the country, the Finnish government held a competition for the design of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Helsinki. The competition was exclusive to Scandinavian architects, with the exception of four invited architects, including Àlvaro Siza. Eduardo Souto de Moura collaborated with Siza on the design. The project site was located in the center of Helsinki, near the main post office and the Parliament. Siza decided to name the building Cometa. The proposal included exhibition spaces, teaching and public facilities, an auditorium, workrooms, workshops, storerooms, film studio, and spaces for the administration and archives. The showrooms were located on the first floor and most of the lighting was intended to come from natural light. The design proposed by Siza included the use of granite for the exterior of the building. Steven Holl was selected by the jury to built the museum. Documenting this project are floor plans, sections, elevations, and site plans. Textual material includes project documentation, competition documentation, and correspondence. Photographs and negatives document the project site.

Project series documents Cornelia Hahn Oberlander's landscape project for Ottawa City Hall, located on Sussex Drive, on Green Island, surrounded by Ottawa and Rideau Rivers, in Ottawa, Ontario. Oberlander worked on this project in 1989-1994 with architect Moshe Safdie. The old City Hall, a heritage building, was retained, and the new landscape design had to include the old structures. Oberlander landscape concept was to create a park-like space used for strolling as well as public functions. She also designed a courtyard with water features, including a pool, trees and flowers. The project also included a play area for the day care centre of the City Hall. The project was completed in 1994. The project series comprises sketches, design development drawings, such as grading plans, landscape plans, sections, elevations and details for the play area, working drawings, including site grading plans, and presentation drawings. The project is also documented through concept notes by Oberlander, specifications, correspondence, including with architects, clients, and consultants, financial documents and photographs of the construction.

The firm identified this project as number 159a. “The project puts the emphasis on two esencial [sic] questions: on the one hand a system which allows to resolve the fair’s pavillons simple and elegantly joining criteria of light, structure and water in a system of constructive rationality and average economy. On the other han[d a]n organization of the public and constructed space in phases which allow to understand the technology area of the south as something complete and shaped since the first of them has been developed. The proposed exhibition pavillions [sic] come from a technical reasoning based in the balance of structural width, central light and drainage of the roof, a result of several projects of similar scale which the office has developed in the last years.” (ARCH270975) Abalos & Herreros initially grouped this project with the competition Fira 2000 - Barcelona (AP164.S1.2002.D14).
