Résumé:
This publication features design projects organized into six working themes: Act, Save, Share, Live, Learn and Make. It is a true manual--in format and content--featuring design solutions that expand access to education, food, health care and affordable housing; increase social and economic inclusion; offer improved alternative transportation options, and provide a balanced approach to land use between the built and natural environments. Cooper Hewitt Curator Cynthia E. Smith traveled to post-industrial cities, urban areas impacted by natural disasters, sprawling cities, places of persistent poverty and major metropolitan regions. Her research yielded nearly 400 potential projects from over 30 states and three indigenous nations (Navajo, Lakota, Pueblo).

Résumé:
Presents an overview of the hundred-year old Dutch private press-movement: a relatively small, yet exceedingly dynamic, creative and influential part of the Dutch book culture. Passionate booklovers were and still are producing extraordinary editions at home. These books appeared in limited editions, printed on extraordinary paper, often with specially created fonts and designed with care. This illustrated survey starts with the pioneers J.C. Bloem, J. Greshoff, P.N. van Eyck and J.F. van Royen – continues via internationally known artists such as S.H. de Roos and H.N. Werkman to the pragmatic printers who now operate in the margins of the book trade. Edited by Paul van Capelleveen en Clemens de Wolf.

Résumé:
This book closely examines 25 of Eliasson's books dating back to 1997, and reveals a whole oeuvre of artist's books—57 titles in all—that will come as a revelation to those who may not closely identify the artist with this medium. Eliasson's exhibition catalogues are always designed with pronounced care, and many are already long out of print or hard to find. Here, in spreads and thorough annotations, we encounter his considered musings on book form and design, and the complex process of book collaboration. Printed Matter also supplies a bibliography of all of Eliasson's books to date, alongside an interview with the artist.

Résumé:
Building measures in existing buildings is of crucial importance for the path to a climate-neutral future. Nevertheless, continuing to build not only requires planners to take great care in planning, but also to be patient and imaginative when dealing with unforeseeable problems. This book chronicles outstanding quality of living conditions that can be created through alterations and conversions, refurbishments, renovations and modernisations carried out on existing buildings. It shows 26 exciting best practice projects from the years 2017 to 2023 – from a converted church in London to a multi-storey car park extension in Cologne. Detailed drawings at a 1:20 scale provide a precise picture of each of the construction solutions along with floor plans and sections.

Résumé:
As urban life is reimagined for greater sustainability, resilience, and adaptation, this publication invites readers to fully engage with the possibilities of how we can coexist with our urban habitats. Ursula Lang uses the yard as a faceted lens through which to examine the multiple and contradictory ways people live in urban environments, and how perceptions of those environments are shaped by contemporary environmental policies and projects. Visual ethnography and narrative illustrate how inhabitants of Minneapolis live with their yards as sites of social and environmental care while also negotiating difference. Throughout, Lang’s subjects engage in diverse and creative everyday practices of cultivation and property ownership, often quite distinct from the environmental policies and projects in place.

Résumé:
Leslie Kern wants your city to be feminist. An intrepid feminist geographer, Kern combines memoir, theory, pop culture, and geography in this collection of essays that invites the reader to think differently about city spaces and city life. From the geography of rape culture to the politics of snow removal, the city is an ongoing site of gendered struggle. Yet the city is perhaps also our best hope for shaping new social relations based around care and justice. Taking on fear, motherhood, friendship, activism, and the joys and perils of being alone, Kern maps the city from new vantage points, laying out a feminist intersectional approach to urban histories and pathways towards different urban futures.

Incorporating in nature and the landscape is the main feature of this issue of C3. The manipulation of their surroundings is a key characteristic of the human race, and here it is explored through the facet of architecture and building. Texts by Aldo Vanini and Alison Killing are followed with examples of significant projects typified by either augmentation to, or submersion in, the landscape. Featured are Rossignol Global Headquarters by Hérault Arnod Architects, Kilden Performing Arts Centre by ALA Architects, Troll Wall Restaurant by Reiulf Ramstad Architects, Mário Sequeira Gallery by Atelier Carvalho Araújo, and OASIS-Pastoral Care Voestalpine by X Architekten, among several others. A special highlight on Madrid-based collective EXIT Architects rounds out the issue.
