Résumé:
The fundamental topics under consideration in this book are the Japanese ordering of space and form, the flexible arrangement of partitions and room functions in a Japanese home, and the general integrative quality of traditional Japanese architecture. The author describes in detail— with abundant architectural plans and drawings— the influence of body anatomy on traditional Japanese units of measurment and house construction. The layout, framework and methods of space control (shoji, fusuma, etc.), the shutters and doors used in the house, and many other topics are given comprehensive treatment. With a new foreword by architect and professor Mira Locher, Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, this updated hardcover edition brings this popular work to modern readers— in hopes that they may find ideas to adopt into their own home.

Since the mid-1990s, when China allowed its architects to practice independently from government-run design institutes, a new kind of architecture, distinguished by unique regional characteristics, has emerged. "China Dialogues" is a rigorously selected collection of insightful interviews that the book’s author Vladimir Belogolovsky has conducted with 21 leading Chinese architects during his extensive travels in China. At the time when so many buildings that are being built around the world are no longer rooted in their place and culture, the leading Chinese architects succeeded collectively in producing unique architectural body of work that could not be confused with any other regional school. The interviews are accompanied by over 120 photographs and drawings of beautifully executed projects built throughout China since early 2000s. "China Dialogues" opens up the thinking process of the country’s top architects, as they share their ideas, insights, intentions, and visions in unusually revealing and candid ways.

This incisive look at the historical, social, and economic forces that have shaped China's modern architecture analyzes the country's struggle to define its own architectural aesthetics. Since the early 1980s, when China opened its doors to international trade and tourism, the country's economy has expanded at an incredible rate. Today, China is poised to be a testing ground for the world's most innovative designers and engineers. Layla Dawson's groundbreaking survey of architectural currents in China lays out not only the historical events that have brought the country to this unique position, but explores the challenges inherent in opening up the country to outside forces and ideas. She examines projects by Chinese and non-Chinese architects, including Zaha Hadid's Soho City masterplan, Rem Koolhaas's CCTV Headquarters, Norman Foster's Shanghai Tower and plans for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. As Dawson demonstrates how conflicting architectural philosophies are visible in China's newly rising skyline, she takes an unblinking look at the liabilities China faces by opening itself up to foreign influence.

Résumé:
Published in conjunction with an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, "A Japanese Constellation" focuses on the work of a small group of architects and designers influenced by and gravitating around the architect Toyo Ito and the architectural firm SANAA. Beginning with an overview of Ito’s career and his influence as a mentor to a new generation of Japanese architects, the catalogue presents an illustrated portfolio of recent works by three generations of internationally acclaimed designers, including Sou Fujimoto, Akihisa Hirata and Junya Ishigami. "A Japanese Constellation" reveals a network of influence and cross-pollination that has become particularly relevant at the start of the 21st century. Essays by curators, architectural historians and critics reflect on the transmission of an architectural sensibility, and suggest an alternative model to what has been commonly described as an individuality-based "star-system" in architecture. Offering a panorama of interlinked, settled or up-and-coming stars, the publication reveals how shared architectural themes travel across generations of architects, creating a strong identity for a regional practice with global impact.
