Résumé:
In 2015, the storied fashion house Fendi moved its headquarters into the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana in Rome, a stark white cube perforated by symmetrical arches. Originally commissioned as part of an exhibition on Roman civilization for the 1942 world’s fair, the architects took their cues from ancient history to create a building that was quintessentially Roman yet decidedly modern, earning its nickname “the Square Colosseum.” Because of its striking appearance and iconic status, the palazzo subsequently made appearances in a number of films by directors such as Roberto Rossellini, Federico Fellini, and Peter Greenaway. The building remained relatively abandoned throughout much of its existence, until its recent inhabitance by the always forward-thinking house of Fendi, an experience which Karl Lagerfeld has likened to being “on a spaceship transported into the future.” Featuring photographs by famous artists such as Gabriele Basilico, Franco Fontana, and Lagerfeld, this gorgeously illustrated volume takes the reader on a fascinating tour through art, architecture, culture, and history.

Résumé:
The history of European landscape design has its beginnings in the early cultures of the Mediterranean. Again and again, especially during the Renaissance, ancient parks and gardens have been imitated as archetypes. The park is still a site of design activity today: human beings use living material to create an artificial landscape, a paradise. This book not only recounts the history of the garden—it conjures it up before the reader’s eyes, from the Garden of Eden and the Hanging Gardens of Nebuchadnezzar to the first book on botany and the gardens of the Renaissance, from the invention of the lawnmower to the land art movement in the United States, Hängende Gärten II (Hanging Gardens II) at the Hanover Expo by the Dutch architectural firm MVRDV, and the Gazebo-Berg (Gazebo Mountain) of the Swiss artist couple Studer/van den Berg at the 2005 world’s fair in Japan. Every single "station" of this journey through gardens and time is illustrated by an entire double page, with pointedly written texts and an abundance of historical and contemporary images.

At the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris, the newly erected Eiffel Tower became one of the first icons of illuminated architecture, a nocturnal "lighthouse." It was not until decades later, in the 1920s, when a building’s evening façade became a central issue for residential and commercial architects, who began to look for avant-garde and aesthetically striking ways to light up their ever-taller works in all the major cities of the world. Both European and American architects wanted to distance their buildings from the garish electric signage that had come to dominate the street-level cityscape, so they worked with more delicately colored floodlights. Contemporary architects use many of the same techniques today, aided by technological advances that allow them to be implemented in particularly dramatic ways. "Luminous Buildings: Architecture of the NIght" opens a dialogue on the often overlooked but exciting connections between architecture, technology and light, offering points of reference in historical buildings and utopias, more recent designs, paintings and photographs of nighttime facades, and scholarly texts.

Résumé:
For almost 100 years, Coney Island was the most popular seaside destination in the United States. Each year, millions escaped the heat of New York City to savor the thrills of the Cyclone roller coaster and Wonder Wheel at the Astroland amusement park. They came to sample an original Nathan's Famous hot dog, witness the first demolition derby, or to take a chance at a game of three-card Monte on the legendary boardwalk. The advent of air-conditioning, concerns about Coney's "tawdry" entertainment, and faster transportation to other beaches hastened the demise of what had become a uniquely American icon of entertainment and a defining terminus of New York at the water's edge. In an effort to revitalize the area, the Van Alen Institute, in concert with the Coney Island Development Corporation, held the Parachute Pavilion Competition, a contest to design a year-round pavilion in the shadow of the Parachute Jump, a landmark built for the 1939 World's Fair. Coney Island: The Parachute Pavilion Competition presents all 864 submissions—from the feasible to the fantastic—received from around the world. The winning design by London-based Carmody Groarke Hardie is a mesmerizing attraction in its own right, composed of two provocative trapezoids illuminated by thousands of colored light bulbs. The design respects the historic icon under which it is located but also promises to become an icon in its own right and bring the fun-loving spirit of Coney Island into the twenty-first century. Featuring essays, photographic documentation, and jury comments, Coney Island: The Parachute Pavilion Competition is a critical resource for students, designers, city officials, and anyone interested in Coney Island and the reinvention of the historic recreation sites of our cities.

Résumé:
From the moment it opened on the first of May in the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London, the Great Exhibition of 1851 was one of the defining events of the Victorian period. It stood not only as a visible symbol of British industrial and technological progress but as a figure for modernity—a figure that has often been thought to convey one coherent message and vision of culture and society. This volume examines the place occupied both materially and discursively by the Crystal Palace and other nineteenth- and twentieth-century exhibitions in the struggle to understand what it means to be modern. Initiated in part by a number of conferences held in 2001 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Crystal Palace, Victorian Prism provides new perspectives to historians, literary critics, art historians, and others interested in how a large glass building in a London park could refract meaning from Caracas to Calcutta. In its investigations of the ways of knowing and shaping the world that emerged during the planning and execution of this first "world's fair," Victorian Prism not only restores the multiplicity of experiences and other determining factors to our picture of the Great Exhibition; it makes reevaluation of the exhibition and its legacies the occasion for reevaluating modernity itself in its broadest sense—as the cultures, potentialities, and liabilities of the Enlightenment. With essays by a number of leading scholars in their fields, the collection as a whole focuses on how these exhibitions, in attempting to define the cultures of their day, incorporated a range of conflicting ideologies and agendas. In doing so, it offers a richer, more complex understanding of the experience of modernity than we have previously acknowledged. The volume also addresses the ways in which the cultural processes and tendencies brought together in these exhibitions have been refracted down to the present, thus informing and complicating our own relationship to both modernity and postmodernity.

Résumé:
Modelling Time: The Permanent Collection 1925–2014 chronicles the exhibition Model as Ruin at the House of Artists in Oslo, November 1 – December 15, 2013. Together with master students from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, Mari Hvattum and Mari Lending brought a unique, modernist model collection out of the archives, re-exhibiting it at the venue that once hosted its biggest ever display in 1931. The collection testifies to a different modernism; not white and austere but colourful, diverse, and full of detail. Modelling Time gives an in-depth portrayal of the so-called ‘Permanent Collection’ of Norwegian scale models, photographs and drawings, tracing its international trajectory of exhibitions from Brussels in 1927 to its last appearance at the World’s Fair in New York in 1939. The book documents the collection’s heydays as part of a vivid international modernist culture, as well as its archival diaspora as it falls into oblivion after WWII. In an extensive, archive-based essay editors Lending and Hvattum give the full context of the collection, while Juliane Derry and Jorge Otero-Pailos look into the models’ materiality and issues of decay. Model scholars and architecture curators Barry Bergdoll, Carson Chan, Pippo Ciorra, Oliver Elser, Juliet Koss, Andres Lepik, Adam Lowe, Wallis Miller, Jorge Otero-Pailos, Léa-Catherine Szacka, and Victor Plathe Tschudi presents a variety of perspectives inspired by the Oslo collection.
