The history of Knoll is the history of modern design. Founded in 1938 by Hans Knoll and joined by his wife, Florence Knoll, the company is credited for bringing European modern design to America. Throughout its history Knoll has been at the forefront of cutting-edge design, the first company to produce Mies van der Rohe’s and Marcel Breuer’s tubular furniture for a receptive domestic market, making Bauhaus ideals a reality to an American audience. More recently Knoll has produced instant classics from Frank Gehry and Richard Meier.

When the public coffers are low, the burden for social policy and urban planning falls more to citizens, and community apathy or simply lack of involvement can have dire consequences. The aim is that these pilot programs will provide practical models for worldwide urban research and design by 2010. Edited by Jane Withers Studio, this volume presents a new perspective on global sauna culture, ritual and design. By defining the sauna’s essence and exploring how this practice is evolving for the 21st century, the authors reveal how sauna is a deeply social practice that can offer renewed benefits for health, wellbeing, and community. It explores sauna culture from ancient global traditions of steam bathing through to modern experimental sauna practices. The publication reveals the important role that design plays in creating spaces that contribute to wellbeing. Creatives such as Bauhaus Sauna Society observe sauna traditions and stage sauna lectures and workshops, developing their own rituals with a deep respect for the vernacular spirit.

Résumé:
Emerging in the death throes of colonial rule, the story of ''Tropical Modernism'' is one of politics and power, decolonization and defiance. Its leading proponents, British architects Jane Drew and Maxwell Fry, adapted a utopian Bauhaus-derived Modernist aesthetic to hot and humid conditions. After Independence, ''Tropical Modernism'' was championed by leaders including Jawaharlal Nehru and Kwame Nkrumah as a symbol of freedom, progressiveness and internationalism in monumental projects such as Chandigarh in Punjab planned by Le Corbusier and Black Star Square in Accra designed by Victor Adegbite. Scrutinizing the colonial narratives surrounding ''Tropical Modernism'', and foregrounding the experience of African and Indian practitioners, this book reassesses an architectural style which has increasing relevance in today’s changing climate.

De Stijl continued explores their body of ideas in meticulous detail.

Résumé:
“Mexico is truly the promised land of abstract art,” Josef Albers wrote to his former Bauhaus colleague Vasily Kandinsky in 1936. Josef Albers in Mexico reveals the profound link between the art and architecture of ancient Mesoamerica and Albers’ abstract works on canvas and paper. With his wife, the artist Anni Albers, Albers toured pre-Columbian archeological sites and monuments during his 12 or more trips to Mexico and other Latin American countries between 1935 and 1968. On each visit, Albers took black-and-white photographs of pyramids, shrines, sanctuaries and landscapes, which he later assembled into rarely seen photo collages. The resulting works demonstrate Albers’ continued formal experimentation with geometry, this time accentuating a pre-Columbian aesthetic.

Then followed a new beginning: with the unique self-determination of a young generation of photographers and visual artists highlighted by the Provoke style--an experimental Japanese photography magazine that had a profound effect on the medium in the 1970s and ‘80s--as well as protest and war documentation of the late 1950s to the early ‘70s, the signature Japanese photobook, as we have come to know it, was born.

Résumé:
As founder of the Bauhaus school, Walter Gropius (1883?1969) is one of the icons of 20th century architecture. While his early buildings in Pomerania were still strongly marked by his teacher Peter Behrens, after an expressionistic phase focused on handicraft, he ultimately arrived at geometric abstraction. During the entire period he collaborated with other architects, founding the collective known as "The Architects Collaborative" in the US. The comprehensive monograph documents all 74 of the known buildings by Gropius that were realized, including many early works which he never publicized; but it also critically examines his unbuilt projects. The book is illustrated with new photographs by the author, historical figures, and with as new plans drawn by the author.
