Résumé:
The events that took place on September 11, 2001, in New York City are the background for a series of essays exploring the response of different cities at different times to natural or man-made disaster. How have cities coped with cataclysmic change in the urban fabric both physically and psychologically? How have they memorialized what they have lost, and how have they imagined their future? What have been the effects, in both the short and long term, of these efforts to rebuild the city? From the devastating earthquake that shook Lisbon in 1755 to the Great Chicago fire in 1871; from the bombing of Hiroshima to the destruction of Rotterdam and Plymouth during the second World War; from the cities and towns ravaged by the Bosnian War to the symbolism of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem - this book offers varying perspectives on how cities have responded to catastrophic disasters. Following these case studies is a history of destruction and rebuilding in Manhattan, and a reflection on the role of cities in sustaining democratic culture concludes the book. Contributors to this volume include leading urban theorists, architectural historians, cultural critics, architects, and a film-maker.

Résumé:
The book documents a unique accumulation of superlatives. Light is shed on two business strategies attempting to realise mankind’s pri- mordial dreams. The scene is the world’s largest self-supporting hall in a small village close to Berlin. At the end of the 1990s, the firm CargoLifter AG attracted international attention with its vision of con- structing the world’s largest heavy-lift airship. By building an architecturally outstanding hangar, the company demonstrated pioneering spirit and gave rise to huge media response. After the enterprise failed, the hall was sold to a consortium of Asian firms that then presented the next superlative. The former hangar was converted into the Tropical Islands Dome, Europe’s largest indoor tropical paradise. The authors Gerlinde Schuller (Information Design Studio, Amsterdam) and Claudia Weber (artist, Berlin) compare these two visions on their paths to implementation, while simultaneously putting them in the context of current international events. The documentation is supplemented with text contributions by: Sam Jacob (FAT Ltd., London), Dingeman Kuilman (Premsela Design Foundation, Amsterdam), Jochen Becker (critic and curator, Berlin) and Prof. Dr. Bernd Kriegesmann (Institute for Applied Innovation Research, Bochum).

Résumé:
It was at Black Mountain College that Merce Cunningham formed his dance company, John Cage staged his first "happening," and Buckminster Fuller built his first dome. Although it lasted only twenty-four years (1933-1957) and enrolled fewer than 1,200 students, Black Mountain College launched a remarkable number of the artists who spearheaded the avant-garde in America of the 1960s. The faculty included such diverse talents as Anni and Josef Albers, Eric Bentley, Ilya Bolotowsky, Robert Creeley, Willem de Kooning, Robert Duncan, Lyonel Feininger, Paul Goodman, Walter Gropius, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, and Charles Olson. Among the students were Ruth Asawa, John Chamberlain, Francine du Plessix Gray, Kenneth Noland, Arthur Penn, Robert Rauschenberg, Kenneth Snelson, Cy Twombly, Stan Vanderbeek, and Jose Yglesias. In this definitive account of the arts at Black Mountain College, back in print after many years, Mary Emma Harris describes a unique educational experiment and the artists and writers who conducted it. She replaces the myth of the college as a haphazardly conceived venture with a portrait of a consciously directed liberal arts school that grew out of the progressive education movement. Proceeding chronologically through the four major periods of the college’s history, Harris covers every aspect of its extraordinary curriculum in the visual, literary, and performing arts.

Résumé:
New York towers among world capitals, but the city we know might have reached even more stellar heights, or burrowed into more destructive depths, had the ideas of its greatest dreamers progressed beyond the drawing board. What is wonderfully grand might easily have been ingloriously grandiose; equally, what is blandly unremarkable might have become delightfully provocative.Nearly 200 proposals spanning 200 years encompass bridges, skyscrapers, master plans, parks, transit schemes, amusements, airports, plans to fill in rivers and extend Manhattan, and much, much more. Included are alternate visions for Central Park, Columbus Circle, Lincoln Center, MoMA, the UN, Grand Central Terminal, the World Trade Center site and other highlights such as: Alfred Ely Beach’s system of airtight subway cars propelled via atmospheric pressure; Frank Lloyd Wright’s last project, his Key Plan for Ellis Island, on which he would have developed his dream city; Buckminster Fuller’s design for Brooklyn’s Dodger Stadium, complete with giant geodesic dome to shield players and fans from the rain; developer William Zeckendorf’s Rooftop Airport, perched on steel columns 200 feet above street level, spanning from 24th to 71st Street, Ninth Avenue to the Hudson River; John Johansen’s Leapfrog City proposal to create an entirely new neighborhood atop the tenements of East Harlem; and Stephen Holl’s Bridge of Houses, offering options from SROs to modest studios to luxury apartments on a segment of what is now the High Line.

Résumé:
DIY architect, publisher and pioneer of the self-build movement, Lloyd Kahn (born 1935) is a legend of the American counterculture. Influenced by Buckminster Fuller, in 1968 Kahn started building geodesic domes, and was an editor for Stewart Brand’s Whole Earth Catalog. In 1970 Kahn published his first book, Domebook One, followed the next year by the bestselling Domebook 2. In 1971, he bought land in Bolinas and built a geodesic dome (later to be featured in Life magazine), but he soon pursued other ways to build, resulting in the classic 1973 book "Shelter." Kahn published numerous self-build books over the ensuing decades, most recently "Tiny Homes on the Move" (2014). "Shelter Cookbook" is an exploration of Kahn’s now iconic publications by the Swiss architect Leopold Banchini (born 1981) - whose practice makes emphatic use of DIY architecture culture- and the German author and curator Lukas Feireiss (born 1977). It relates Kahn’s building philosophy to contemporary practices, recording Banchini and Feireiss’ personal search for unexpected relationships between historical documents and contemporary architectural projects. The large-format volume includes interviews, photospreads and archival material on self-building, and also includes a mycological investigation. "Shelter Cookbook" will inspire architects, designers, artists and counterculture cognoscenti alike with its positive vision of the possibilities and legacy of the self-build movement.

Résumé:
Wherever and whenever state and church, state and autocracy, political and architectural ambition have met and loved one another hungrily, domes have raised their imperious, lofty heads. At once magnificent and messy, old-fashioned and ultra-modern, opulent and squalid, London is something of a mongrel city, cross-bred over the centuries from cut-throat commerce, high finance and unrestrained creativity. For all its inventiveness, however, it is now also a city unable to provide its citizens with decent public transport, housing or services, beset and betrayed by governments who take from it but refuse to give back. In the lead-up to the much-hyped Millennium, a fortune was spent on lavish building projects—giant wheels, great courts, titanic art galleries, ambitious museums, a Brobdingnagian dome—but little in the way of public services, intelligent urban planning and infrastructure except by default. Has the right kind of money been spent on the wrong sort of projects? Who, in this pluralistic age, will cut through the layers of bureaucracy to restore some of the city’s unruly splendour? In this elegant and polemical book, the architecture critic Jonathan Glancey explores London’s Millennial follies and asks how and where London might now channel its energies. Combining anecdote and analysis with a sustained critique of the way the city is governed and financed, he draws a detailed picture of the state London’s in and speculates on how it might be transformed.

Résumé:
Designers included in the first edition have continued to exercise their skills on new projects that are progressions from their former work. The nature of this book is that the case studies are primarily projects that have been taken to completion, however, it is of interest that several of the designers included here are currently involved in much more ambitious projects. The Millennium Dome is also discussed in the introduction as an example of large scale portable architecture and a high profile building in the UK. The overriding purpose of this book is to show that portable buildings are eminently feasible, capable of a wide range of roles and economic to build and operate. They can also be subversive as well as sensitive, amusing as well as appropriate, energetic as well as economic. This second edition of 'Portable Architecture' includes work by two new design teams and seven new case studies to help further define the relevant characteristics of this important strand of contemporary building design. The projects completed by the two new designers introduced in this edition have been included for very difference reasons. Architects Branson Coates designed Powerhouse::UK, a temporary British products design exhibition sponsored by the UK Department of Trade and Industry represents an establishment based endorsement of a portable building. Festo KG's 'Airtecture' hall uses inflatable technology and fundamentally could not be more different, it was not reported in the main stream press yet it won many industrial design awards.

Résumé:
Built by the decree of Constantine, rebuilt by some of the most distinguished architects in Renaissance Italy, emulated by Hitler's architect in his vision for Germania, immortalized on film by Fellini, and fictionalized by a modern American bestseller, St. Peter's is the most easily recognizable church in the world. This book is a cultural history of one of the most significant structures in the West. It bears the imprint of Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo, Bernini, and Canova. For Grand Tourists of the eighteenth century, St. Peter's exemplified the sublime. It continues to fascinate visitors today and appears globally as a familiar symbol of the papacy and of the Catholic Church itself. The church was first built in the fourth century on what is thought to be the tomb of Peter - the rock upon which Christ decreed his church shall be built. After twelve hundred years, the church was largely demolished and rebuilt in the sixteenth century when it came to acquire its present-day form. St. Peter's awes the visitor by its gigantic proportions, creating a city within itself. It is the mother church, the womb from which churches around the world have taken inspiration. This book covers the social, political, and architectural history of the church from the fourth century to the present. From the threshold, to the subterranean Roman necropolis, to the dizzying heights of the dome, this book provides rare perspectives and contexts for understanding the shape and significance of the most illustrious church in the world.
