Résumé:
Otto Treumann (1919-2001) is regarded as a major pioneer in the modernization of graphic design in the Netherlands. Premised on Swiss typography and the Bauhaus, Treumann's oeuvre is distinguished by an easy-to-read combination of visual elements and an iconoclastic treatment of colour. These benefit from his wide knowledge of printing techniques acquired during the Second World War when he forged documents for the resistance. He enjoyed a special relationship with industrial clients, invariably achieving top quality and innovation in the arena where economics meets culture. His work has proved eminently suitable for house styles and logos, including those for Wolters Noordhoff the publishers, the Kröller-Müller Museum, the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects and El Al Airlines. He also designed posters for the Industries Fair in Utrecht, the Rotterdam Ahoy' and Tattoo in Delft. The book is designed by Irma Boom.

Résumé:
For the Kosovo Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale, artist Flaka Haliti created the installation Speculating on the Blue, reflecting on the meaning of borders, democracy, freedom and mobility. The skeletons of barrier-like objects in the space are a reference to the aesthetics of the concrete walls that are erected between nations as a materialization of conflict. Haliti’s installation aims at demilitarizing and decontextualizing this specific aesthetic practice by stripping the columns down to their material essence and juxtaposing them with elements that are by nature resistant to the concept of borders. In this scenario, the horizon and the blue pictorial ground, which directly references the blue-painted barriers in front of the Kosovo UN, create a counter image to the concept of borders as a tool to raise new perspectives. In addition is an artist’s conversation with Markus Miessen and an essay by curator Vanessa Joan Müller.

Résumé:
First published in 2006 (and now rare), and originally written as a dissertation in 1963, "The Formal Basis of Modern Architecture" is the acclaimed American architect Peter Eisenman's masterly formal analysis of architecture. "I wanted to write an analytic work that related what I had learned to see, from Palladio to Terragni, from Raphael to Guido Reni, into some theoretical construct that would bear on modern architecture, but from the point of view of a certain autonomy of form." Here, Eisenman—world famous for his Holocaust Memorial in Berlin (2005)—confronts historicism with theory and the analysis of form, illustrating his observations with numerous precisely executed drawings. "The Formal Basis of Modern Architecture" was Eisenman's dissertation at the University of Cambridge, and was first published as a facsimile edition by Lars Müller Publishers in 2006; that edition is now reprinted in a smaller format.

Résumé:
Last 2007 La Casa Encendida organised the Sueño de Casa Propia (Dream of a Home of One’s Own) exhibition, curated by María Inés Rodríguez, in which a series of reflections on housing by artists, designers and architects served as the basis for an analysis of how different contexts produce different strategies for resolving the issue of access to housing. Parallel to the exhibition, a seminar entitled Housing and Domestic Space in the 21st Century was organised. Coordinated by Juan Herreros, an architect and lecturer at the Madrid University School of Architecture, the seminar brought together a group of intellectuals from both Spain and abroad for discussions on this theme. The ultimate aim of the seminar was to raise awareness about architecture’s potential role in the current and evident transformation of lifestyles. With the collaboration of: Raúl Cárdenas, María Auxiliadora Gálvez, Vicente Guallart, Hans-Walter Müller, Philippe Rahm, Alejandro Aravena, Robert Kronenburg, Colin Davies and Enric Ruiz-Geli.

Résumé:
Like a time capsule, The German Issue brings together all the major "issues" that were being debated on both sides of the Atlantic—which eventually found their abrupt resolution in 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall. It involved the most important voices of the period—from writers and filmmakers to anthropologists, activists and poets, terrorists and philosophers: Joseph Beuys, Michel Foucault, Christo, Christa Wolf, Walter Abish, Alexander Kluge, Paul Virilio, Ulrilke Meinhof, William Burroughs, Jean Baudrillard, Hans Magnus Enzenberger, Maurice Blanchot, Hans Jürgen Syberberg, Heidegger, André Gorz, Helke Sander. Opening with Christo's "Wrapping Up of Germany" and the celebrated dialogue between East German dramaturge Heiner Müller and Sylvère Lotringer on the Wall ("Mauer"), since published in many languages, The German Issue offers a first-hand account of the Western world on the threshold of a major global mutation. It also embodies at its best Semiotext(e)'s tenacious effort to establish a creative bridge between art and intellect, culture and politics, Europe and America.

Résumé:
Swiss graphic design and “the Swiss Style” are crucial elements in the history of modernism. During the 1920s and ’30s, skills traditionally associated with Swiss industry, particularly pharmaceuticals and mechanical engineering, were matched by those of the country’s graphic designers, who produced their advertising and technical literature. These pioneering graphic artists saw design as part of industrial production and searched for anonymous, objective visual communication. They chose photographic images rather than illustration, and typefaces that were industrial-looking rather than those designed for books. This volume looks at graphic language developed by such Swiss designers as Theo Ballmer, Max Bill, Adrian Frutiger, Karl Gerstner, Armin Hoffman, Ernst Keller, Herbert Matter, Josef Müller-Brockmann, and Jan Tschichold. The style of these artists received worldwide admiration for its formal discipline : images and text were organized by geometrical grids. Adopted internationally, the grid and sans serif typefaces such as Helvetica became the classic emblems of Swiss graphic design. This book shows design work across a range of media, including posters, magazines, exhibition displays, brochures, advertisements, books, and film.
