Otto Treumann (1919-2001) is regarded as a major pioneer in the modernization of graphic design in the Netherlands. Premised on Swiss typography and the Bauhaus, Treumann's oeuvre is distinguished by an easy-to-read combination of visual elements and an iconoclastic treatment of colour. These benefit from his wide knowledge of printing techniques acquired during the Second World War when he forged documents for the resistance. He enjoyed a special relationship with industrial clients, invariably achieving top quality and innovation in the arena where economics meets culture. His work has proved eminently suitable for house styles and logos, including those for Wolters Noordhoff the publishers, the Kröller-Müller Museum, the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects and El Al Airlines. He also designed posters for the Industries Fair in Utrecht, the Rotterdam Ahoy' and Tattoo in Delft. The book is designed by Irma Boom.

Résumé:
A refugee from Nazi Germany, Nikolaus Pevsner became a central player in the intellectual and cultural life of his adopted country. Almost impossibly energetic, efficient and effective, his contribution both to scholarship and to the public appreciation of art and architecture was immense. In addition to the famous Buildings of England series - known commonly as "Pevsner" - he wrote standard textbooks, held professorships, delivered the Reith lectures, promoted with equal fervour Victorian and Bauhaus architecture; and for over twenty-five years from the end of the war was a regular broadcaster for the BBC. Here his talks ranged from a discussion of Breughel's art to the buildings of Gaudi; from a series on Englishmen's castles to meditations on modern town planning; from Elizabethan mannerism to contemporary American architecture - and of course to his ground-breaking series of Reith Lectures on "The Englishness of English Art".

Résumé:
It fired the imagination of hundreds of progressive artists across Austria, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Hungary and Poland. It became a symbol of modernity for millions through its use in magazines, newspapers, advertising and books. Published to accompany an exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, this book presents the work that redefined the very notion of art and embodied at times a dizzying freedom from traditional social roles. Familiar names such as László Moholy-Nagy, Josef Sudek and the Bauhaus are connected to a wealth of individuals and organizations whose influence is being recovered for the first time. The perceptive text explores topics ranging from the avant-garde (surrealism, experimental photography) to popular culture (tabloids, sports, the ‘new woman’) to extremist politics and war. Particular attention is given to photomontage, a technique that epitomized the era and found broad acceptance among artists and mass media outlets.

Résumé:
A collaboration between sculptor Olaf Nicolai and photographer Heidi Specker, this artist book poetically captures Nicolai’s intervention during the reconstruction of the Bauhaus Masters’ Houses—once home to Moholy-Nagy, Kandinsky and Klee, among others—in Dessau. Coating the walls with marble dust with varying degrees of granulation to create geometrical patterns, Nicolai produced a subtle relief that responds to the homes changing light conditions. Specker in turn gives the camouflaged surfaces a heightened sense of presence through her photographic renderings that direct the viewer’s gaze to the interplay of contour, surface, space and light. In Nicolai and Specker’s joint publication, an aesthetic intervention in a reconstructed space finds another iteration through the medium of photography in book form. The soft cover and Chinese fold give this elegant artist book and abstract journey through an iconic space a supple, organic feel.OLAF NICOLAI & HEIDI SPECKER

Résumé:
''Constructive Clarity: Max Bill and His Time, 1940–1952'', the second installment of art historian Angela Thomas’s multivolume biography, continues her meticulous exploration of the life and work of the influential artist. Max Bill was undoubtedly one of the most versatile artists of the twentieth century––a designer, painter, sculptor, architect, graphic designer, typographer, writer, curator, teacher, and politician––who influenced generations of artists. Picking up where the first volume left off,Thomas turns her attention to Bill’s life during World War II, exploring the ground-breaking artistic and intellectual networks to which Bill belonged: from his time at the Bauhaus in Dessau to his connections with the Parisian avant-garde and his lifelong friendship with Georges Vantongerloo. His importance as a writer, publisher, and exhibition organizer comes to the fore in this volume, as does his crucial influence on the development of Concrete art in South America and his active interest in urban planning and postwar reconstruction. contexts in which he worked.

Résumé:
Beginning in the 1920s, and especially after the Nazis introduced the Nuremberg Race Laws in the 1930s, more than 130 Jewish architects chose to leave their native Germany and begin afresh in Palestine. Many of them, including Alex Baerwald and Harry Rosenthal, left behind significant buildings that were already central to the urban image of Berlin. Nevertheless, upon arriving in their new desert home, completely unaccustomed to the climate, the culture or the language, these Bauhaus-era repatriates set about laying the foundations of a new society with amazing vigor. This volume, assembled by the Israeli architect Myra Warhaftig, provides comprehensive documentation of works by this first generation of Jewish-Palestinean architects, including kibbutzim, villages and cities with housing developments, hospitals, schools, universities, theaters, administrative buildings, etc. It also includes documentation of the lives and works of many of the most entrepreneurial individuals to escape in the diaspora, who, along with their descendents, laid the foundations of modern-day Israel.

« Ishimoto.

The early twentieth century was a time of extraordinary change in Europe. War and revolution shattered the traditional cohesion of European civilisation, while the machine age brought mass production and distribution and a new sense of internationalism. This ‘heroic’ period of modernity found particularly forceful expression in graphic design and photomontage throughout Europe, where new techniques allowed a fusion of typography, painting and photography, evoking the dynamism and fragmentation of cinema. "Avant-garde Graphics: 1918 – 34" showcases the work of many of the leading practitioners of the Modern movement, from Italian Futurists, the Dutch members of De Stijl and the German Bauhaus, to the Constructivists of Russia and central Europe. Drawn from the collection of Merrill C. Berman, one of the greatest collections of twentieth-century graphic art in the world, this book features colour reproductions of original posters, prints, book designs and political and commercial ephemera, together with original designers’ layouts and photomontages.

Résumé:
A walk along any London street takes you past a wealth of seemingly ordinary buildings: an Edwardian church, modernist postwar council housing, stuccoed Italianate terraces, a Bauhaus-inspired library. But these buildings are not just functional. They are evidence of London’s rich and diverse history and have shaped people’s experiences, identities, and relationships. In this engaging study, Paul L. Knox traces the history of London from the Georgian era to the present day through twenty-five surviving buildings. Knox explores where people lived and worked, from grand Regency squares to Victorian workshops, and highlights the impact of migration, gentrification, and inequality. We see famous buildings, like Harrods and Abbey Road Studios, and everyday places like Rochelle Street School and Thamesmead. Each historical period has introduced new buildings, and old ones have been repurposed. As Knox shows, it is the living history of these buildings that makes up the vibrant, but exceptionally unequal, city of today.
