Résumé:
In "Beyond the Map", Bonnett presents stories of the world’s most extraordinary spaces—many unmarked on any official map—all of which challenge our assumptions about what we know—or think we know—about our world. As cultural, religious and political boundaries ebb and flow with each passing day, traditional maps unravel and fragment. With the same adventurous spirit he effused in the acclaimed Unruly Places, Bonnett takes us to thirty-nine incredible spots around the globe to explore these changing boundaries and stimulate our geographical imagination. Some are tied to disruptive contemporary political turbulence, such as the rise of ISIL, Russia’s incursions into Ukraine and the Brexit vote in the United Kingdom. Others explore the secret places not shown on Google Earth or reflect fast-changing landscapes.

What unites Google and Facebook, Apple and Microsoft, Siemens and GE, Uber and Airbnb? Across a wide range of sectors, these firms are transforming themselves into platforms: businesses that provide the hardware and software foundation for others to operate on. This transformation signals a major shift in how capitalist firms operate and how they interact with the rest of the economy: the emergence of ‘platform capitalism’. This book critically examines these new business forms, tracing their genesis from the long downturn of the 1970s to the boom and bust of the 1990s and the aftershocks of the 2008 crisis. It shows how the fundamental foundations of the economy are rapidly being carved up among a small number of monopolistic platforms, and how the platform introduces new tendencies within capitalism that pose significant challenges to any vision of a post-capitalist future.

In the late 18th century, surveyors divided the Midwestern United States into the Jefferson Grid: a system of neat, one-by-one-mile squares. But because the earth is round, the lines tapered to the north. Therefore the grid had to be corrected: every 20 miles, grid corrections brought theory and practice back together. Pilot and aerial photographer Gerco de Ruijter (born 1961) first spotted these small bends and T-junctions while completing a residency in Wichita; then, with the help of Google Earth, De Ruijter found thousands of these corrections. Presenting De Ruijter’s selection of over 250 photocollage grid corrections—snowed under or dried up, in cities and in deserts—and featuring an exceptional design by Irma Boom, this publication is a testimony to the human urge to design the landscape and the ways in which nature responds to that urge.

Résumé:
If participation has been an ideal in politics since ancient democracy, in art it became central only with the avant-gardes emerging from WWI and the Russian Revolution. Politics and aesthetics are still catching up with each other. In the 21st Century, since the revolutionary unrest of the 1960s, participation in art and architecture has lost its utopian glow and become the focus of a fierce debate: does ‘participatory’ art and architecture shape social reality, or is it shaped by it?Contemporary critics see in participation only technocratic control, while others embrace it as a viable politics in an era of global capitalism. This volume breaks the impasse by looking at how participants themselves exert power, rather than being victimized or liberated from it. From artists hijacking Google Earth to protesters setting up a museum of the revolution in Cairo, art, architecture, and daily life are explored in their participatory dimension.

Résumé:
As we spend our days increasingly glued to our computers and handheld devices, rapidly tapping keywords into Google, cutting and pasting Word docs and texting urgently truncated messages, it is becoming increasingly rare to pen anything by hand. No wonder hand-written fonts are all the rage in the world of graphic design. Writing, like drawing, has become an endangered act. Drawings on Text--which explores the idea that when a hand-written note is illegible, it becomes a drawing--is the third book in this series, edited by Dutch artist Serge Onnen. The handwritten can take many forms, from an illegibly scrawled letter to initials carved into a tree with a knife. A catholic selection of the hand-written-as-drawing is included in this innovative volume, which was first published in Zing magazine. Included are pieces by John Cage, Napoleon Bonaparte, Olav Westphalen, Roland Barthes, Gustave Flaubert and Victor Hugo, among others.

My house, my pool, my horse, my Learjet, my Mercedes, my wife, my toys, my trees, my garden, my cockroach. Now it's really all yours. Neubau Welt is an extensive encyclopedia of well over a thousand pictograms of everyday objects and obsessions large and small. They were created by designer Stefan Gandl, whose book dsos1 was also published by dgv and has since become a collectors’ item. All of the objects shown in the book can also be found as Adobe Illustrator files on an included CD. For the price of the book, readers also buy the right to use the exclusive graphics and Neubau typefaces in their own work. Reminiscent of a digital Letraset, Neubau Welt contains everything any designer could possibly need but couldn't find on Google. Unlike ClipArt, the smorgasbord of objects can be enlarged indefinitely. This also makes them extremely useful for architects and other creatives, who can integrate them into their presentations and visual models.
