Résumé:
After an issue dedicated to the persistent structures of colonial domination and racialization in western and northern European societies, The Funambulist 55 (Sep-Oct 2024) Asian Imperialisms intends to decenter Europe, and examine historical and present processes of imperial and/or colonial domination by seven arguably ethnocratic Asian states, namely, Japan, the People’s Republic of China, the Russian Federation (and the Soviet Union), India, Pakistan, Iran, and Turkey (alongside Azerbaijan). This “Asian” denomination chosen for this issue’s title follows historic examples of solidarity at this massive continental scale, the most famous one being the 1955 Afro–Asian Conference in Bandung. The cover is an artwork by Korean artist Kyungmi Shin

Born in 1945 in Dalat, South Vietnam, French photographer Bernard Plossu has traveled extensively throughout his life, immersing himself in the cultures of Chiapas in Mexico, the American West, India, the Aeolian Islands and Niger. ''Bernard Plossu: The Still Hour'' gathers 106 images taken over the course of 30 years from Plossu’s travels in the South of France, Spain, Greece, Italy and Turkey. In these black-and-white snapshots, the omnipresent white light eclipses people in a visual exercise that reflects on the real dimension of landscapes and architectures; the images shape a timeless space in an almost surrealistic, dreamlike journey through time and light.

The complete volume on the buildings and urban projects by Istanbul-based firm Emre Arolat Architects (EAA), the Turkish firm that won the 2010 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Emre Arolat Architects is a compilation of projects by this firm, founded in 2004 by Emre Arolat and Gonca Paolar. The scope of EAA’s projects is all-encompassing, from luxury hotels to factories. EAA’s roots are in modernism’s honesty of structure, expression, and materials, yet they are undeniably influenced by Turkish vernacular. The book highlights thirty-four projects across Turkey, including the Istanbul Museum of Contemporary Art, Antakya Museum Hotel, Cukurova Regional Airport, Yalikavak Palmarina, Sancaklar Mosque, and Le Meridien Istanbul Etiler.

Résumé:
One of the principal founders of the Arts and Crafts movement, William Morris was responsible for hundreds of patterns for wallpapers, fabrics, tapestries, and carpets that are iconic of the late nineteenth century and continue to resonate today. It is now widely acknowledged that his artistic production was stimulated by his deep familiarity with embroideries, woven velvets, silks, carpets, and metalwork from Iran, Syria, and Turkey, which he collected throughout his lifetime. Ranging from popular nineteenth-century tourist merchandise to rare artefacts of historical significance, Morris’s collection is a testament to the interconnectedness of global artistic traditions and the enduring importance of recognising the contributions of various cultures to the evolution of his design and craftsmanship.

Résumé:
"The (un)common place" is the result of the research project "Trans : it. moving culture through Europe", a journey through creative practices between art, architecture and urban research that are redefining the concept of public space in Europe. A "common place", a shared vision, from Norway to Turkey, from Spain to Bulgaria, from Cyprus to Romania, emerged from the more than fifty artists and projects documented in this book. Artists, institutions and society are searching for new relations to experiment unforeseen forms of cohabitation, mutual understanding and visions of the urban landscape. The book, organised in five thematic chapters, presents a European interpretation of public space resulting from complexity and difference, translation and memory.

Résumé:
In 1842, the pioneering French photographer Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey (1804–1892) set out eastward across the Mediterranean with a custom-built camera to explore ancient lands that were largely unknown to the Western world. This book is the first to fully consider the hundreds of daguerreotypes that resulted from his three-year journey, many of which were made using innovative techniques that fascinate photographers to this day. The images, including the first-known photographic documentation of significant locations, offer tangible evidence of historic sites, many of which have since been destroyed, in places such as Greece, Italy, Egypt, Turkey, Syria, and Jerusalem. They are remarkable and unparalleled portraits of a world gone by.
