Résumé:
Today, tourism is rooted in a model of environmental and cultural degradation. 'AV Proyectos' presents seven alternatives that anticipate a hopeful shift towards community-based rural life, from C733's Jaguar Park in Mexico to Ryue Nishizawa's Shishi-Iwa House in Japan. As Gonzalo Pardo and Andrés Rubio point out in the article accompanying this section, its harmful impact must be confronted by defending local tradition and identity. David Chipperfield has shared his experience and also highlighted the growing difficulty of accessing housing, which has created a social crisis in London and is now surfacing in Galicia. The issue continues with the construction of the French Lycée Library in Madrid by Alberto Campo Baeza, and an introduction to the creative process of designers Muller Van Severen.

Résumé:
In San Francisco many theaters built between 1910 and 1950 are still standing, and some even remain in operation, serving as poignant reminders of Hollywood's Golden Age and the social interactions that once came with movie-going. R.A. McBride's lush color photographs--made with film cameras, of course--showcase these temples to celluloid in all their threadbare grandeur. Photographed empty, the buildings' architectural qualities, from rotunda chandeliers and warmly glowing walls to drab lobbies and worn armrests, come to the fore. Essays by scholars and film exhibitors including Rebecca Solnit, Julie Lindow, Eddie Muller, Chi-Hui Yang and Gary Meyer cast light from personal and scholarly perspectives, examining the movie houses' roles as characters in the cultural drama of the city.

Can art express questions about justice? Could art, perhaps, even create justice? In Aesthetic Justice, sociologist Pascal Gielen and curator Niels Van Tomme invite a variety of artists and critical thinkers—including Zoe Beloff, Arne De Boever, Mark Fisher, Matt Fraser, Tessa Overbeek, Kerry James Marshall, Viktor Misiano, Carlos Motta, Nat Muller, Julie Atlas Muz, Gerald Raunig, Dieter Roelstraete, Hito Steyerl, Julia Svetlichnaja, Hakan Topal, Samuel Vriezen and Christian Wolff—to reflect on new futures for the notion and practice of justice. The book offers thought-provoking views on the ways in which art may confront and potentially redirect social and political futures. Incorporating analyses of contemporary artworks that challenge the social, political or economic status quo, as well as interviews with artists and theoretical reflections, Aesthetic Justice considers the liberating potential of aesthetic frameworks and suggests alternatives for a more just future.

Résumé:
This title, published in 1979 and long since out of print, now appears as a reprint from Lars Muller Publishers. The original book was released in the series of publications Source Materials of the Contemporary Arts initiated by Kasper Konig and produced by the Press of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. The publication represents an important document in Dan Graham's artistic examination of the video medium. Graham's installations and performances with video from the years 1970 - 78 are documented with numerous illustrations, photos, and brief descriptions. In addition, the volume contains an essay by the artist in which he examines the various possibilities and forms of representation offered by the video medium, and draws the boundaries between these and representational spaces in television, film, or architecture. The book also offers contributions by Michael Asher and Dara Birnbaum, as well as an annex with a biography and bibliography.

In the nineteenth century, Marx rejected the notion of homo sapiens, offering instead homo faber to indicate how consciousness follows from the primary activity of making. Against this, a certain ludic tradition has imagined a homo ludens, humans defined through their relationship with games and play. Cabinet 45 features Joshua Glenn on H.G. Wells’ “Floor Games”; D. Graham Burnett on games played by game theorists; Barbara Levine and Jessica Helfand on dexterity games; James Trainor on the lost world of “adventure” playgrounds; Dana Katz on Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt’s “Oblique Strategies”; an interview with Bertell Ollman, inventor of the board game “Class Struggle”; and Jeff Dolven on poems as games. Elsewhere in the issue: Helen Larsson on the history of applause; Wayne Koestenbaum’s legendary “Legend” column; Naomi Muller on eating the zoo animals in Berlin during World War II; Jeremy Crichton on “spite” houses; and much more.

Résumé:
Swiss typographer and graphic designer Hans-Rudolf Lutz found the passion behind this book in the trash literally. In 1975, he happened to notice the graphics on some cardboard shipping boxes put out for garbage collection. They soon became an obsession, which has resulted in this fascinating 5000-illustration compendium. Lutz was enchanted by the simplicity and clarity of these found graphics. Even with the most extreme reduction to essentials, their drawings are capable of conveying sensuality, surprise and precise information, Lutz writes. "I have come to admire these unsung designers." The book covers the spectrum from pure representation to decorative display to the personification of the product. This marvelous book is a sure source of wonder and inspiration for professional designers and is the first work of several that Niggli is bringing back by this pacesetting typographer, a follower of the great Max Bill and contemporary of Emil Ruder and Josef Muller-Brockman.

Résumé:
Back in 1993, graphic designer brothers Markus and Daniel Freitag were on the lookout for a messenger bag. Inspired by the cheerfully colored trucks rumbling along the highway that crossed the city of Zurich just in front of their apartment, they cut a messenger bag out of an old truck tarpaulin. The shoulder strap was fashioned from used car seatbelts, while an old bicycle inner tube provided the edging. Freitag bags soon became fashionable and the Freitag company now employs more than 120 people. The publication uses the example of Freitag to show that design does not end with the product. The history, products, manufacture, organization, distribution, marketing, and reception are explained, commented upon, and presented in often surprising ways. On the occasion of an exhibition dedicated to the Freitag story at Museum of Design Zurich, Lars Muller Publishers will publish a generously illustrated paperback book that includes interviews, documentation, and essays on the Freitag concept and its history.

Résumé:
Public parks are among the most important open spaces in our cities, and contribute decisively to their character. They fulfil ecological, social and urban design requirements, and upgrade adjacent neighbourhoods and even whole city districts. New parks are being built all over Europe, in the hearts of cities or out in the periphery, as in the case of Invalidenpark in Berlin and Thames Barrier Park in London, respectively. Some, such as Park André-Citroën, Paris, serve purely recreational purposes. Others, namely the sculpture garden of the Kröller-Muller Museum Park in the Netherland, are devoted to art or to botanic abundance, as the Botanical Garden in Barcelona. The creation of such extensive new green spaces is always the subject of public and professional discourse, no matter whether this concerns La Villette in Paris, Duisburg-Nord Lanscape Park in the Ruhr, or the new park at Munich's old airport in Riem. According, the compact survey is rounded off by theoretical discussion. Based on essays published in "Topos - European landscape magazine" between 1993 and today, the resulting collection of familiar and less-known parks from many European countries provides an excellent overview of current approaches to park and park design.
