Résumé:
This issue of the Cornell Journal of Architecture is about the now, the new, and the next in architecture, while simultaneously acknowledging that every possible future is intrinsically linked to the existent, to the present and its attendant past. At the heart of issue 8: RE is the understanding that the creative act itself is reiterative; that in rethinking, recombining, reshuffling, recycling, and reimagining aspects of the world around us, we produce work that both belongs to the current moment and establishes new future trajectories. The texts reflect the interconnected strands of technology, history, theory, and intuition that necessarily reinforce each other in architectural education and practice today: issues of reuse and recycling; of feedback loops and regression; of dialogue, criticism, and correspondence; and of the role that changing technologies have in restructuring the way we think, see, and remember.

Résumé:
"As architects," writes David Chipperfield, "we must both be part of and stand apart from the culture within which we operate. To be effective we must embrace power but also distance ourselves, we must engage in dialogue and we must refuse to listen, we must explore the familiar and the unfamiliar, we must embrace history and reject it. Finally we must resolve our ideas in matter and form." This publication was initiated and designed by the architect, who, in four sections, writes on form, language, composition and materiality. His choice of images, including architectural sketches and drawings, help to make this a personal notebook that documents the resolution and realization of formal ideas from his own viewpoint. Also featuring plans and illustrations of built and unbuilt projects, it explores the relationship between form and matter, both theoretically and practically.

Landscape architecture is a unique discipline where art, nature and the city converge and enter into an exciting dialogue. In the USA, the country of vast open plains and spacious towns, the great tradition of life in confrontation with nature plays an equally important role in landscape architecture as the acute problems of the built environment or social problems within the community. Design methods and practise in landscape architecture form the focus of this book, complemented by an analysis of the theoretical aspects of the subject. Perceptive portraits of 13 offices span the whole breadth of landscape design, from the post-ecological utopia of Michael Sorkin (New York/Vienna) to the urban pragmatism of the Roma Design group (San Francisco), from the ecological approach of the Philadelphia group Andropogon, also active in Japan, to the minimalist landscape art of Kathryn Gustafson (Seattle/London/Paris).

Résumé:
Architecture is a collaborative art, calling on the efforts of not only architects but also engineers, developers, plumbers, electricians and others. The production process must balance individual empowerment and general management to allow for meaningful dialogue between diverse professionals. This publication explores these interactions through ten interviews with professionals who contribute to architecture in various ways. Conducted by writer and editor Brendan McGetrick, and originally published as a series for the Chinese edition of Domus magazine, these conversations illustrate the many facets of architectural practice. Interview subjects include : Michael Rock (Founder of the graphic design firm 2x4), Lu Zhenggang (Founder of the digital rendering company Crystal CG), Barry Bergdoll (Curator of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art, New York), Mark Wigley (Dean of Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation) and Tan Xiaochun (Chief of Construction for China's National Stadium).

Résumé:
This publication examines the role of national narratives in defining the Arab territory through the strategic implementation of architecture and urban planning. The Arab region, home to 423,000,000 inhabitants, is almost twice the size of the United States but still lacks sufficient and accessible research. "Architecture of the territory" uncovers the mechanisms that have shaped this distinct territory, providing a critically overdue examination of the dichotomy between the overplanned cities of autocratic governments and the post-conflict urban sprawls of precarious states in the Arab world, where national narratives have acted as a vehicle to implement the development of these territories. The book opens a dialogue between young Arab researchers and professionals covering, among other subjects, tensions inherited from colonial borders; agricultural strategies; and imported housing typologies and narratives. The content draws a parallel to similar issues found in the global architectural discourse of today.

After studying at University College Dublin, Níall McLaughlin moved to London, where in 1990 he set up his own office. Since then, he has developed a solid career, defined by a timeless language and an attentive dialogue with context. The latest issue of AV Monographs takes stock of his career with a selection of twenty of his main works. Featured in chronological order these key projects reflect a commitment to the discipline that makes no distinctions of scale or program. Floor plans of bold geometry and facades of tactile sensuality are as present in the domestic projects of Piper’s End and Goleen as they are in the large buildings for the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, as well as in the civic complexes in London and Limerick, in all of which shines the so very British spirit of honouring the past without ceasing to look in the direction of the future.

Résumé:
Since 2008, German photographer Winfried Bullinger (born 1965) has traveled around Eastern and Central Africa, capturing the vernacular architecture of these regions. In this physical archive of his long-term project, Bullinger portrays a diverse array of African pastoralists’ homes, including tents, open dwellings and huts. Despite their variety, the structures are all made from materials available directly on site; they are radically efficient and sustainable. Implementing a silver-gelatin technique, Bullinger shoots with a large-format camera and honors the capricious natural light of day. Although he captures few inhabitants in his images, Bullinger records their many traces. Indeed, his photographs are born from a dialogue with the inhabitants and reveal architecture as a direct response, refined over centuries, to a people’s specific environment and culture. Bullinger’s conscientious formal and interpersonal decisions culminate in this valuable record of rapidly disappearing African architectural heritage.

Résumé:
Shaped by a keen sense of humanity and a wide knowledge of history and literature, Canadian artist Ken Lum (born 1956) is a visionary who has consistently challenged societal norms, the ruling classes, religious suppression and racism, among other horrors that we continue to inflict on each other. His influential work, with its focus on cross-cultural dialogue and the complexities of the modern world, resonates globally—be it through painting, sculpture, photography or public art projects that engage with individual and collective identity in the context of historical trauma and the complications of memory. This publication presents a sweep of Lum’s photographic series, at once descriptive and disruptive, personal and political, including ''Portrait/Logos'' (1984–86), ''Portrait/Repeated Text Works'' (1993 to present) and ''Image Mirrors'' (2021); as well as his work with ''Monument Lab'', a public art project he cofounded with urban geographer Paul Farber.
