Résumé:
CIAM (Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne), founded in Switzerland in 1928, was an avant-garde association of architects intended to advance both modernism and internationalism in architecture. CIAM saw itself as an elite group revolutionizing architecture to serve the interests of society. Its members included some of the best-known architects of the twentieth century, such as Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, and Richard Neutra, but also hundreds of others who looked to it for doctrines on how to shape the urban environment in a rapidly changing world. In this first book-length history of the organization, architectural historian Eric Mumford focuses on CIAM's discourse to trace the development and promotion of its influential concept of the "Functional City." He views official doctrines and pronouncements in relation to the changing circumstances of the members, revealing how CIAM in the 1930s began to resemble a kind of syndicalist party oriented toward winning over any suitable authority, regardless of political orientation. Mumford also looks at CIAM's efforts after World War II to find a new basis for a socially engaged architecture and describes the attempts by the group of younger members called Team 10 to radically revise CIAM's mission in the 1950s, efforts that led to the organization's dissolution in 1959.

Résumé:
Modeling History revisits the material legacy of Kenneth Frampton's course Studies in Tectonic Culture, a collection of models familiar to anyone who has passed through Avery Hall. It looks back in order to project forward, and asks how the construction of architectural history through the making of models might generate new histories, practices, and ways of seeing. Produced on the occasion of the exhibition 'Stagecraft: Models and Photos' at Columbia University's Arthur RossArchitecture Gallery, Modeling History moves between modes of representation, past and present, to explore Frampton's theory and pedagogy concerning tectonics. The sixteen photographs enclosed in this book by photographer James Ewing reveal the possibilities of Frampton's radical approach today. Each image not only reengages with a model built during Frampton's seminar, but, by playing with the potentials of photography, also aspires to project similar material, tectonic, and poetic realities. Printed in a limited edition of 250 copies.

Résumé:
The evolution of modern architecture has been inextricably entangled in issues of politics, nationalism, and the environment, creating a tension between local context and global development that is unresolved to this day. In this context, few writers have exerted as much influence on architectural theory and practice as Kenneth Frampton. In this illustrated volume, twenty-nine contributors from around the world amplify and pay tribute to his writing and thought. Intended for all those concerned with the built environment, this book offers further evidence of how this scholar, humanist, and teacher has shaped our understanding of the working reality of the architect. The premise of "Modern architecture and the lifeworld" is rooted in Frampton’s understanding of how architecture must engage with both cultural and constructional imperatives; and it addresses strategies for grappling with contemporary concerns such as regional identity amidst urban globalization, and tectonic culture and landform in the construction of place.

Résumé:
The artist Michael Webb, trained as an architect, operates at the intersection of art and architecture and is widely known for creatively exploring the outer limits of drawing techniques, including orthographic and perspectival projection systems. He is a founding member of Archigram, which formed at the Architectural Association in London in the early 1960s. The legendary avant-garde group is known for their fantastical projects that were often interpreted as critiques of contemporary architectural theory and practice. "Two Journeys" is the first comprehensive monograph on Webb’s oeuvre and assembles sixty years of the artist’s work into a continuously evolving narrative about the multifaceted relationships among the built environment, landscape, and moving vehicles. He investigates these relationships through the act of drawing using notions of time, space, and speed, which are artfully mediated by the precision of mathematics and tempered by abstraction.

MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects, based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, have an international reputation. Producing a wide range of projects both in Canada and further afield, they work in a sophisticated modern vernacular idiom, drawing inspiration from a rich local heritage of building types and reinterpreting them according to the best practices of 21st-century architecture. It is above all for their dignified and beautiful houses perched on the wild, rocky coasts of Nova Scotia that the firm is recognized. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, this remarkable body of work is based around a number of plan types that answer to the particular local climate: open to the sun but sheltered from the winds, and built using traditional materials that are allowed to weather, these dwellings embody the architects’ engagement with their unique surroundings and material culture. This new monograph covers MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects’ complete work. Introductions by renowned architectural writers set the scene, while individual projects are illustrated through evocative photographs and detailed plans and drawings. What emerges is a celebration of an architecture that is both practical and deeply poetic.
