Résumé:
In the early 1950s, many in the architectural profession turned their gaze towards India, where an ideal modern city seemed to be becoming a reality. When Le Corbusier and his team started work in February 1951 in Chandigarh, American planner Albert Mayer and his young principal architect Matthew Nowicki had already completed a land development plan for the site. The challenge Le Corbusier then faced was to demonstrate how a city designed from the drawing board could feel humane, functional and viable once built. Once the home of public officials, Chandigarh has become a vibrant garden city and a magnet for the booming Indian software industry. Attracted to the idea of a possible dialogue and contradiction between European architecture and Indian lifestyle, German ethnographer Bärbel Högner began photographing the city. Chandigarh: Living with Le Corbusier surveys Le Courbusier's contribution to India's first planned city, while simultaneously revealing Högner's passionate interest and impeccable eye for architectural detail.

Résumé:
This publication considers the architecture, landscape, and town plans of thirty-one counties west of Blue Mountain and north to Lake Erie, including cities and communities big and small. The first comprehensive look at the built environment in this large and varied territory, the volume spans the years from the late eighteenth century through to the first decade of the new millennium and reveals a range of architectural surprises. The authors discuss exemplary and everyday buildings and places — Harmonist villages, Carnegie libraries, river communities, amusement parks, farms and barns, the crossroads of Breezewood, and Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater among them — and canvass the scores of bridges, railroads, and inclines that cross the region's rivers, hills, and mountains. Descriptions of close to 150 of the commonwealth's small settlements, from coal patches to pike towns, capture the intense dialogue between industry and agriculture that typifies western Pennsylvania. Close to 400 illustrations, including photographs, maps, and drawings, bring the nearly 800 entries to life.

Like a time capsule, The German Issue brings together all the major "issues" that were being debated on both sides of the Atlantic—which eventually found their abrupt resolution in 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall. It involved the most important voices of the period—from writers and filmmakers to anthropologists, activists and poets, terrorists and philosophers: Joseph Beuys, Michel Foucault, Christo, Christa Wolf, Walter Abish, Alexander Kluge, Paul Virilio, Ulrilke Meinhof, William Burroughs, Jean Baudrillard, Hans Magnus Enzenberger, Maurice Blanchot, Hans Jürgen Syberberg, Heidegger, André Gorz, Helke Sander. Opening with Christo's "Wrapping Up of Germany" and the celebrated dialogue between East German dramaturge Heiner Müller and Sylvère Lotringer on the Wall ("Mauer"), since published in many languages, The German Issue offers a first-hand account of the Western world on the threshold of a major global mutation. It also embodies at its best Semiotext(e)'s tenacious effort to establish a creative bridge between art and intellect, culture and politics, Europe and America.

Sluminsider is a choral narrative that attempts to reveal the complexity of the slum of Mathare, one of the biggest shantytowns in Nairobi. The project of expansion of a street school, the Why Not Junior Academy, and the process of environmental improvement of the surrounding area, where a community agriculture initiative has been set up to replace an unauthorized dump, is the starting point from which to combine experiences and identities from very different disciplines, including architecture, design, agriculture, photography and video. This project is one of the case studies used for comparison and dialogue with the city of São Paulo and the São Paulo Calling research project, which examined the informal settlements of Rome, Nairobi, Medellin, Mumbai, Moscow and Baghdad. For six months, an exhibition analyzed the characteristics, differences and causes of informal settlements, developing six workshops in the field in different favelas of São Paulo and organizing size encounters that made São Paulo the world capital of the debate on transformation of contemporary cities.

Résumé:
For the past decade, photographer Mark Ruwedel has been compiling an epic photographic account of the natural environment of his home city of Los Angeles. From the stark Californian coast to the vast expanses of the interior – many of which have been further lain bare by wildfires – Ruwedel tracks a unique ecology in constant, if subtle, dialogue with the human life that surrounds it: one where wildness is designed, contested, permitted, or resisted to varying degrees of success. In this first of four volumes, Ruwedel follows the Los Angeles River from Big Tujunga Wash to the Pacific Ocean. Using patient, forensic large- and medium-format photography in black and white, Ruwedel recalls the legacy of nineteenth-century photographer-cartographers such as Carleton Watkins and Timothy O’Sullivan, as well as land artists and New Topographics photographers of the 1970s, while forging his own elucidating relationship with the landscape. The series title "Landscapes of four ecologies" recalls architectural critic Reyner Baynam classic study "Los Angeles: The architecture of four ecologies," which describes the city as "one of the ecological wonders of the modern world."

Résumé:
Since the late 1970s, Canadian photographer Jeff Wall has made significant contributions to establishing photography as an autonomous medium. He is considered the founder of "staged" photography and generates mostly large-format photographs—often inspired by literature, film and art history—composed in a multilayered and subtle way from a multitude of individual shots. Wall makes a distinction between his documentary still life photos and his "cinematographic" pictures, the latter of which take months or even years to complete. His contemporary genre scenes invoke famous works by Hokusai, Manet, Kafka, Ellison and others.Among the more than 50 works collected in the catalog of the large-scale solo exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler are Wall’s iconic large-format slides in light boxes, black-and-white photographs and color photographic prints. His most recent images, representing the entire spectrum of his oeuvre, enter into a dialogue with works from the time of Wall’s beginnings as an artist and reveal a wide range of references in terms of content and form.

Résumé:
Lisbon is being ravaged by an unprecedented housing crisis. The exponential increase of prices, the combined outcome of the financialisation of housing and the lack of continued investment of public policies, means that every Portuguese person is, or knows someone who is, affected by the crisis. There is a restless public debate, but little has been told about the buildings that will give shape to the political strategies that are being conceived and implemented. Which city do we wish to build to face the problem? What can be the role of architecture in this context? "Living in Lisbon" concisely presents the conjecture and possibilities of action to think about the building of the city. The book includes an overview of the most charismatic architectures resulting from public housing policies that have been built in Lisbon over the course of 50 years of democracy, describes the main projects that are currently on the table, presents analytical visions of the present situation and freely envisions plans for the future in the form of dialogue, essay or manifesto.
