Every year The Best Dutch Book Design are put on exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Each book has been submitted by its publisher, designer or printer, or by the person who or body which commissioned it in the first place, and they are all displayed on a stage for the public's attention to be drawn to their handsome appearance and the ways in which solutions have been found in their designing, printing and binding. In fact, the whole point is the care and attention that can still be devoted to the production of printed matter in these hurried and often careless and indifferent times. These are 'good' books, not so much because of what they contain but precisely because of their striking size, format, cover, binding and/or interior- all of which may themselves be an immediate reflection of the contents.

Résumé:
The Mechanicos (meaning ‘machinic’ in Greek) is a folk dance performed by the sponge divers of Kalymnos island, recording the crippling effects of decompression sickness and paralysis caused by increasing industrial exploitation. Today, a disproportionate number of persons with physical impairments and debilitating conditions remain largely invisible. The writing in this book points to different experiences of movement, time, and space: Whether through the creation of a vernacular sign language; a different pacing of time and projection of futurity; exchanging forms of care around a healing spring; recording the ways in which 3 generations navigate everyday interactions through a ‘broken telephone line’ of connection; or the friendship between a woman with visual impairment and her dog, Mercy, who helps her navigate the narrow busy sidewalks of central Athens. These stories contribute to imagining a different kind of mobility.

Résumé:
''The Right to Nature'' is a new chapter of reflection and work of the AG greenscape, centered on the current and renewed relationship between man and nature, and the consequent transformation of our cities through new ways of living, inhabiting, working with nature and the landscape as the protagonist, in every area, at all project scales, as a social balancer and activator of a new urban sociality. The relationship between man and nature today is an urgent issue in the debate on the contemporary city, but it still has to be truly explored, defined, and built. Throughout seven main topics – Green and blue infrastructures, Regeneration, Public space, Dwelling, Green welfare, Heritage, and Care –, the book explores contemporary urban landscape issues at the different scales of the project, in the light of the relationship between human beings and nature.

Résumé:
For millennia, plants and their habitats have been fundamental to the lives of Indigenous Peoples - as sources of food and nutrition, medicines, and technological materials - and central to ceremonial traditions, spiritual beliefs, narratives, and language. While the First Peoples of Canada and other parts of the world have developed deep cultural understandings of plants and their environments, this knowledge is often underrecognized in debates about land rights and title, reconciliation, treaty negotiations, and traditional territories. Plants, People, and Places argues that the time is long past due to recognize and accommodate Indigenous Peoples' relationships with plants and their ecosystems. Analyzing specific cases in which Indigenous Peoples' inherent rights to the environment have been denied or restricted, this collection promotes future prosperity through more effective and just recognition of the historical use of and care for plants in Indigenous cultures.

Résumé:
Norway-based Canadian architect Todd Saunders has a unique understanding of the arctic landscape. His designs, set in some of the most remote locations on earth, splice modern sculptural forms with a deeply rooted respect for nature. His care for the natural landscape can be seen in his work, such as the Fogo Island Inn and the artists studios in Newfoundland. Rather than imposing themselves upon the countryside and coast, Saunders’s buildings seek a sensitive accommodation within the topography, among the icy flora, fauna, and treescapes of the landscapes they inhabit. This volume focuses on Saunders’s residential designs and includes eleven of his most recent projects across Scandinavia and Canada, photographed amid their dramatic landscapes. Sections on process and ways of working, as well as Saunders’s inspirations and design philosophy are interwoven in separate sections, which include drawings, plans, and photography.

Résumé:
Angela Davis provides a powerful history of the social and political influence of whiteness and elitism in feminism, from abolitionist days to the present, and demonstrates how the racist and classist biases of its leaders inevitably hampered any collective ambitions. While Black women were aided by some activists like Sarah and Angelina Grimke and the suffrage cause found unwavering support in Frederick Douglass, many women played on the fears of white supremacists for political gain rather than take an intersectional approach to liberation. Here, Davis not only contextualizes the legacy and pitfalls of civil and women’s rights activists, but also discusses Communist women, the murder of Emmitt Till, and Margaret Sanger’s racism. Davis shows readers how the inequalities between Black and white women influence the contemporary issues of rape, reproductive freedom, housework and child care in this bold and indispensable work.

Résumé:
Modern environments are awash with pollutants churning through the air, from toxic gases and intensifying carbon to carcinogenic particles and novel viruses. The effects on our bodies and our planet are perilous. This is the first thorough study of the increasingly widespread use of digital technologies to monitor and respond to air pollution. It presents practice-based research on working with communities and making sensor toolkits to detect pollution while examining the political subjects, relations, and worlds these technologies generate. Spanning three project areas, this study describes collaborations to monitor air pollution from fracking infrastructure, to document emissions in urban environments, and to create air-quality gardens. As these projects show, how people respond to, care for, and struggle to transform environmental conditions informs the political subjects and collectives they become as they strive for more breathable worlds.

Résumé:
Bitterfeld’s county museum, Kreismuseum Bitterfeld, contains a black box with herbaria dating from 1931. This collection, compiled by botanist Hans Weber, is an inventory of the flora gathered in the nearby Goitzsche region, a forested area of floodplain. It was not long before the plant life collected here was forced to give way to society’s demand for brown coal. Taking the herbaria as its starting point, this book interweaves stories about Bitterfeld’s energy-defined landscape with the modern legacy of the Bauhaus. Using archival documents, physical interventions, and field studies, the book proposes a new reading of the Bauhaus’s modernist motto ”Light! Air! Sun!“ recast as ”Heat, Breath, Growth“. The book thus points up the downside of resource extraction and environmental destruction in the ”clean modern age“, while also identifying movements in search of a nature-based culture characterized by care and stewardship.

How do contemporary design practices engage with political and societal issues? Can design realize ideas that lead to significant change? Where would the change happen: in the design studio, on the factory floor, in exhibition settings or on the street? Some of the design world’s greatest practitioners, including architects, came together for a multi-faceted, three-year project sponsored by Iaspis. This book, the project’s culmination, comprises texts, interviews, drawings and other artwork in three sections: WHAT brings together contemporary and historical writings; HOW analyzes common issues and emerging tactics within socially and politically engaged design; and WHERE offers a broad perspective on new forms of design practice. Featuring facsimiles of 36 projects from the Design Act archive, this rich book is a must-have for designers who care about their role in the wider world.
