Résumé:
This book consists of twelve chapters written by leading scholars, each spotlighting ideas emanating from a particular field which helped to shape Modernism, including eugenics, primitivism, Freudianism, and Nietzscheanism. Each contributor goes into their topic in some depth, but also pays attention to the impact it had on overarching issues. At the same time, the contributors identify contemporary developments in other disciplines, especially art, architecture, music, film and philosophy, which paralleled developments in poetry, fiction and drama. Each chapter concludes with a brief guide to further reading.

Résumé:
As the scale and gravity of climate change becomes undeniable, a cultural revolution must ultimately match progress in the realms of policy, infrastructure, and technology. Proceeding from the notion that dominant Western cultures lack the terms and concepts to describe or respond to our environmental crisis, ''An ecotopian lexicon'' is a collaborative volume of short, engaging essays that offer ecologically productive terms—drawn from other languages, science fiction, and subcultures of resistance—to envision and inspire responses and alternatives to fossil-fueled neoliberal capitalism.

Castillo closely follows the course of this escalating rivalry between competing consumer cultures through the 1950s, concluding that the Soviet bloc's inability to make good on the claim that it could emulate goods and living standards offered by the West was a contributing factor in communism's eventual demise. Using a mosaic of sources ranging from recently declassified government documents to homemaking journals and popular fiction, this book contributes an engaging new perspective on midcentury modernist style and its political uses at the dawn of the cold war.

Conceptual movement—that unique band of artists that included Bas Jan Ader, Allan McColllum and other. Like these artists and other L.A. Conceptual pioneers such as Ed Ruscha and John Baldessari, Ruppersberg used photographs (both made and found) in combination with text and narrative strategies to mingle, blend and upend both fiction and fact—most famously in “Where's Al?” (1972) and “Between the Scenes”(1973).

Résumé:
This thesis investigates the role of the term plot in mediating relations between architecture and narrativity. Examining organisational strategies in the creation of real and virtual spaces, it identifies literary works by novelists who have resisted, or subverted, plot conventions in fiction (Joris-Karl Huysmans, Edmond de Goncourt, Xavier de Maistre and Neal Stephenson), and introduces architectural spaces such as Thomas Edison s film-studio Black Maria, and the plotless productions of early cinematography, to juxtapose concepts of plot and spatiality in a study of the production and consumption of pre-digital virtual spaces.

"Coralations" is a philosophical exploration of the media that come into focus when we shift our attention from the highly recognizable coral of the tropics. Focusing on soft corals and deep-water corals leads to different narratives about climate change and involves different analogies to media. Through thought-provoking analyses of photography, science fiction, visual art, and scientific images, Melody Jue renews our curiosity and broadens our understanding of corals beyond the dominant narratives about their endangerment. "Coralations" shows how paying attention to particular corals can change what we take for granted.

Résumé:
Based on the photographs and writings of his great-grandfather, photographer and video artist Andréas Lang embarks on a search for traces and research into a lost chapter of German colonial history in Central Africa: a frontier expedition to take possession of the territory of French Congo. His photographs and videos depict places and landscapes in which the phantoms of the colonial era are still present, in a state of limbo between reality and fiction, past and present. He contrasts this with previously unpublished historical material that reflects the bleak reality of colonialism.

Résumé:
"I am concerned with the power of sound! and what it can do to the body and the mind," wrote composer Pauline Oliveros. In the body, histories and politics come together with sound and listening, memory and feeling. "Bodies of sound" offers a resonant exploration of feminist sonic cultures and radical listening in over fifty contributions. In this book of echoes, a variety of forms – from essays to text scores to art, fiction and memoir – speak across gender, ways of knowing, witnessing, sounding and voicing, translation, displacement, violence and peace.
