Résumé:
Collected here for the first time in paperback are the large-scale projects Meier developed during the last decade–mature works that coincide with his celebration as one of the world’s foremost architects. His reflections on being heir to an abstract modernist ethic meld together with his concepts of the city and the contemporary landscape. Meier’s architecture privileges large public works above others, using their monumentality to imagine the possibilities of contemporary civic spaces. The recent Church for the Jubilee in Rome demonstrates the conjunction of modernity with simplicity and emotion of form, light, and material. But Meier also uses smaller-scale private commissions–such as the celebrated 173/176 Perry Street residential towers in New York–as an opportunity to explore the limits of his unique and immediately recognizable brand of modernism.

Résumé:
J.G. Ballard's 1975 novel "High Rise" contains all of the qualities we have come to expect from this author: alarming psychological insights, a study of the profoundly disturbing connections between technology and the human condition, and an intriguing plot masterfully executed. Ballard, who wrote the tremendously troubling "Crash," really knows how to dig deep into our troubling times in order to expose our tentative grasp of modernity. Some compare this book to William Golding's "Lord of the Flies," and there are definite characteristics the two novels share. I would argue, however, that "High Rise" is more eloquent and more relevant than Golding's book. Unfortunately, this Ballard novel is out of print. Try and locate a copy at your local library because the payoff is well worth the effort.

Résumé:
Since the 1960s, many architects and urban planners have reacted against the drab universalism and inhuman scale of modern architecture and urbanism, seeking instead to recover a sense of community and place. It is apparent to these architects and planners, as well as segments of the general public, that something needs to be done to improve the physical landscape and the sense of desolation it arouses. Efforts to do so have been grouped under the rubric "postmodern urbanism." While this late- twentieth-century quest for meaning has elicited nostalgia for cities of the past, it has not been accompanied by a desire to relinquish technological innovations that raise the standard of living, or the pursuit of progress and modernity. "Postmodern Urbanism" examines these important and complex issues that directly affect our cities and neighborhoods.

Résumé:
Drawing on the United Nations' assertion that "the climate crisis is mainly a water crisis," this thought-provoking book compiles over 100 key terms defined by contemporary thinkers in science, philosophy, politics, activism and architecture. These terms—such as Water Rights, Hydrocatharsis, Decommodification of Water and Liquid Modernity—form a vital lexicon to guide transformative action and foster a more symbiotic relationship with water. Structured as a collaborative exploration, the book combines scientific insight, philosophical depth and architectural vision to redefine how we engage with water socially, politically and ecologically. Illustrated with cartographic case studies, the volume offers vivid and hopeful scenarios for reshaping human–water interdependence. Through its diverse contributors and an interdisciplinary approach, "100 Words for Water" challenges readers to rethink water management and design as the foundation of a resilient, multispecies future.

Résumé:
This book contains a selection of 83 collective housing works carried out in Spain between 1929 and 1992. It offers a detailed version of the residence projected in Spain between the Barcelona International Exhibition of 1929 and the Universal Exhibition of Seville in 1992. Two particularly significant dates, two points of inflection in architectural thought: the enthronement and the epilogue of modernity. It contains plans of all buildings redrawn and with different scales depending on whether it is the urban implementation, the definition of the block or the description of the types, with photos of the time and cards with the main data of each project and its Author. The research process reconstructs the evolution of the project to extract its main values as a tool for the city and contemporary housing.

Résumé:
Modern hygienic urbanism originated in the airy boulevards, public parks, and sewer system that transformed the Parisian cityscape in the mid-nineteenth century. Yet these well-known developments in public health built on a previous moment of anxiety about the hygiene of modern city dwellers. These forgotten efforts to renew and reform the physical and moral health of the urban subject found expression in the built environment of the city—in the gymnasiums, swimming pools, and green spaces of private and public institutions, from the pedagogical to the recreational. Sun-Young Park reveals how these anxieties about health and social order, which manifested in emerging ideals of the body, created a uniquely spatial and urban experience of modernity in the postrevolutionary capital, one profoundly impacted by hygiene, mobility, productivity, leisure, spectacle, and technology.

Résumé:
A photo-collage of past and present street visuals in Asia, Aestheticizing Public Space explores the domestic, regional, and global nexus of East Asian cities through their graffiti, street art, and other visual forms in public space. Attempting to unfold the complex positions of these images in the urban spatial politics of their respective regions, Lu Pan explores how graffiti in East Asia reflects the relationship between aesthetics and politics. The book situates itself in a contested dynamic relationship among human bodies, visual modernity, social or moral norms, styles, and historical experiences and narratives. On a broader level, this book aims to shed light on how aesthetics and politics are mobilized in different contested spaces and media forms, in which the producer and the spectator change and exchange their identities.

Résumé:
Daniel Young and Christian Giroux have been making art together for nearly ten years. Their sculpture, public art and film installations are the product of an ongoing conversation concerning mid-century modernity, and the production of space and the built environment. This first in-depth monograph provides a career overview as well as an exploration of the duo's latest and most emblematic project, Beta Boole - sculptures involving Ikea furniture. The term Boole comes from the 3D computer modeling operation of adding and subtracting simple forms to generate more complex ones. These pieces of furniture provide both a recognizable and vernacular set of domestic forms, which perversely realize the Modernist goal of universal design through the machinations of globalization. Brancusi, Gordon Matta-Clark, and the Japanese architectural office SANAA are among their critical influences.

Résumé:
In the first decades of the twentieth century, Marseille was a booming Mediterranean port. Positioned at the very edge of France, the city functioned as a critical fulcrum between the metropolitan center and its overseas empire. A notoriously dangerous and cosmopolitan city, Marseille became the focus of the extraordinary energies of some of the most remarkable architects and theorists of urban modernity. Drawing together architects, photographers, and cultural theorists, including Le Corbusier, Sigfried Giedion, Walter Benjamin, and László Moholy-Nagy, Mediterranean Crossroads examines how mythic ideas about Marseille helped to shape its urban landscape. Tracing successive planning proposals in tandem with shifting representations of the city in photographs, film, guidebooks, and postcards, Sheila Crane reconstructs the history and politics of architecture in Marseille from the 1920s through the years of rebuilding after World War II.

Résumé:
"The avant-garde" is perhaps the most important and influential concept in the history of modern culture. For over a hundred years it has governed critical and historical assessment of the quality and significance of an artist or a work of art, in any medium-if these have been judged to be 'avant-garde', then they have been worthy of consideration. If not, then by and large they have not, and neither critics nor historians have paid them much attention. In short, modern art is and has been whatever the 'avant-garde' has made, or has said it is. In this Very Short Introduction, David Cottington explores the concept of the 'avant-garde' and examines its wider context through the development of western modernity, capitalist culture, and the global impact of both.
