Résumé:
The earth is not a dead, mute landscape but an eloquent, living being. Sometimes it just takes a spade, a packet of seeds, and a pair of sturdy boots to realize it. The philosopher Byung-Chul Han spent three springs, summers, autumns, and winters in his secret garden in Berlin, devoting himself to daily gardening in all weathers. For Han, gardening is a form of silent meditation, a lingering in stillness. It gives you a different sense of time. Every plant has its own time that is specific to it, and the garden is a space in which these multiple temporalities overlap and cut across one another. The longer he worked in the garden, the more respect he developed for the earth and for its enchanting beauty.

Coinciding with a major retrospective exhibition at MAXXI, Rome, ''Col tempo, 1956–2024'' provides a complete and long-awaited retrospective of the career of Guido Guidi, sequenced by the artist himself in his typically illuminating, associative style. The book begins with some of the earliest photographs Guidi made, aged fifteen, in the countryside around his home in Cesena in the Italian region of Romagna. The sequence that follows, covering almost seventy years, encompasses a wide range of styles, forms, and approaches as it traces the evolution of one of the most important voices in contemporary photography. It includes journeys to the USA, Russia, Turkey, and Portugal, and studies of the works of architects including Carlo Scarpa, Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier. Consistently, though, it returns to the modest agricultural landscapes where Guidi was born and still lives and works today, among which he has developed the revelatory visual language for which he is celebrated as a modern master.

Résumé:
What fuels and sustains activism and organizing when it feels like our worlds are collapsing? ''Let This Radicalize You" is a practical and imaginative resource for activists and organizers building power in an era of destabilization and catastrophe. Longtime organizers and movement educators Mariame Kaba and Kelly Hayes examine some of the political lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the convergence of mass protest and mass formations of mutual aid, and consider what this confluence of power can teach us about a future that will require mass acts of care, rescue and defense, in the face of both state violence and environmental disaster. The book is intended to aid and empower activists and organizers as they attempt to map their own journeys through the work of justice-making. It includes insights from a spectrum of experienced organizers, including Sharon Lungo, Carlos Saavedra, Ejeris Dixon, Barbara Ransby, and Ruth Wilson Gilmore about some of the difficult and joyous lessons they have learned in their work.

Résumé:
For over 35 years, with the emphasis on both personal experience and ideas, Richard Long has made art in many places around the world by making walks in rural and wilderness landscapes. His simple and direct engagement is realised by leaving and recording traces of his journeys, creating works concerned with time, movement and locality. This book accompanies an exhibition of new works by Long that span the variety of media he employs, including photographs, sculptures, and mud and text works made directly on the gallery walls. The landscapes walked to create the work include Galicia, Brittany and his recent travels to India, where he spent time among the Warli tribe with the artist Jivya Soma Mashe. The catalogue illustrations consist of Long’s recent works both in the gallery and in landscapes, and the text explores Long’s relationship to landscape as well his art historical significance, focussing on the works featured in this exhibition.

Résumé:
Finding one’s way with a map is a relatively recent phenomenon. In premodern times, maps were used, if at all, mainly for planning journeys in advance, not for guiding travelers on the road. With the exception of navigational sea charts, the use of maps by travelers only became common in the modern era; indeed, in the last two hundred years, maps have become the most ubiquitous and familiar genre of modern cartography. Examining the historical relationship between travelers, navigation, and maps, "Cartographies of travel and navigation" considers the cartographic response to the new modalities of modern travel brought about by technological and institutional developments in the twentieth century. Highlighting the ways in which the travelers, operators, and planners of modern transportation systems value maps as both navigation tools and as representatives of a radical new mobility, this collection brings the cartography of travel—by road, sea, rail, and air—to the forefront, placing maps at the center of the history of travel and movement.

At a moment when the world is facing the world’s largest refugee and migration crisis since the Second World War, Incoming by Irish artist and Deutsche Börse Photography Prize winner Richard Mosse deals with the major humanitarian and political plight of our time, the displacement of millions due to war, persecution and climate change. With illuminating texts by Mosse and the philosopher Giorgio Agamben, the 576-page book combines film stills from the artist’s latest video work made in collaboration with electronic composer Ben Frost and cinematographer Trevor Tweeten – a haunting and searing multi-channel film installation, accompanied by a visceral soundtrack. Journeys made by refugees and migrants across the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe are captured with a new weapons-grade surveillance technology that can detect the human body from 30.3km. Blind to skin colour, this camera technology registers only the contours of relative heat difference within a given scene, foregrounding the fragile human body’s struggle for survival in hostile environments.

Résumé:
"Living Earth" is a new book filled with ideas, conversations, lectures, and documentation relating to commissioned installations, soundwalks, concerts and performances made for and during the Dark Ecology project. This three-year project, a collaboration between Sonic Acts and the Norwegian curator Hilde Methi, was held from 2014 to 2016 in different places in Norway and Russia and included three curated ‘Journeys’. Living Earth is a recreation of these research trips to the Barents Region, from Kirkenes and Svanvik in Norway to Nikel, Zapolyarny and Murmansk in Russia. The project was inspired by Timothy Morton’s concept of ‘dark ecology’ and his philosophy of ‘ecology without Nature’. Morton offers a radical criticism of the modernist way of thinking about nature as something outside of us, and instead proposes an interconnected ‘mesh’ of all living and non-living objects. He ruminates on this idea in his essay for Living Earthentitled ‘What Is Dark Ecology’, stating at the outset that ecological awareness is ‘weird weirdness’.
