Résumé:
"David Goldblatt: No ulterior motive" coincides with a major traveling retrospective of the renowned South African photographer’s work. From vintage handprints of the artist’s black-and-white photography, taken between the 1950s and the 1990s, to his post-apartheid, large-format, color work, photographs in the volume are approached thematically—under headers such as "Assembly," "Disbelief," "Dialogues," and "Extraction"—to draw out the artist’s core interests in working-class people, the landscape, and the built environment. Objects from Goldblatt’s (1930–2018) personal archive are also included. In an effort to create a more inclusive dialogue around Goldblatt’s work, the catalogue features images and texts by contemporary photographers and scholars, many of whom were mentored by Goldblatt, including Zanele Muholi and Sabelo Mlangeni. Some write on Goldblatt’s photographs, while others discuss his influence on their own work. Goldblatt devoted his life to documenting his country and its people. Known for his nuanced portrayals of life under apartheid, he covered a wide range of subjects, all of them intimately connected to South African history and politics. The wide-ranging voices in this catalogue foster a broad frame of reference for his work, thus countering a frequent misunderstanding of apartheid as a situation peculiar to South Africa.

Résumé:
From December 9, 2023 to April 21, 2024, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain presents an exhibition created by the Indian architecture studio, Studio Mumbai, directed by Bijoy Jain. Inspired by the rhythm of breathing, this exhibition offers a space for reverie and contemplation in dialogue with Jean Nouvel’s building. Born in 1965 in Mumbai, Bijoy Jain created Studio Mumbai in 2005. Exploring the links between art, architecture and materials, this human-scale organization is composed of craftsmen and architects who design and build each project themselves, using local resources. Bijoy Jain / Studio Mumbai participated in many exhibitions around the world, including the Venice (2010, 2016) and Chicago (2017) architecture biennals. For the Fondation Cartier, Bijoy Jain unites man and nature, light and shadow, bamboo, brick and stone to form a meditative landscape taking us into the heart of creation. Sculptures, objects and furniture interact with artworks by Chinese painter Hu Liu and Turkish ceramist Alev Ebüzziya Siesbye, invited by the architect, revealing a shared sensibility and ethos between these artists. The catalog published in conjunction with the exhibition invites readers to discover Bijoy Jain’s aesthetics and philosophy. Conceived as a work-in-progress of the exhibition, this book focuses on the artist’s drawings, photographs of his studio and works in the making.

This book has been published to coincide with the exhibition Jeppe Hein, in the Espace 315, Centre Pompidou, Paris, sept.-nov. 2005.

Résumé:
Robert A. M. Stern is dedicated to the synthesis of tradition and innovation. In more than thirty-five years of practice, he has produced a wide range of building types with a variety of stylistic influences, all inspired by the great legacy of American architecture. His firm, Robert A. M. Stern architects, was first recognized for its distinguished houses, and residential design remains the cornerstone of the practice. This illustrated monograph-a companion to "Robert A. M. Stern: houses"- presents twenty-six of the firm's most memorable houses. Located in diverse settings across North America-from a valley in Colorado with views of the Aspen mountains to a bluff overlooking Long Island Sound to an island off the coast of British Columbia-these houses reveal the architect's emphasis on the importance of context and his dedication to exploring the nature of space. Each house invokes the vernacular architectural heritage particular to its region while reflecting its unique natural surroundings. Whether they are Shingle style "cottages" by the sea, colonial Georgian country estates, or elegant Regency designs, Stern's houses are unique both for their timelessness and their ability to evoke a conversation with the past-a dialogue he believes lies at the heart of architecture.

ome places or epochs are identified with certain colours: Siena for example, which lent its name to yellowish-brown pig-ments, or the Habsburg era with its Imperial yellow. Tel Aviv, has its White City – a UNESCO World Heritage site designed by Jewish architects who studied at the Bauhaus. White is the colour identified with the Modern Movement, of course, but the coloured interiors of the masters’ houses in Dessau by Walter Gropius show that not everything was reduced to that hue. There are probably just as many colour theories as there are colour tones; but the streets in our towns and cities are rarely characterized by a consistent colour scheme. In this respect, the materials and their surface finishes play a dominant role. In our December issue, we present various architectural concepts that focus on the effects of colour. For example, the Sparren-burg Visitors’ Centre in Bielefeld with its tamped concrete facades enters into a dialogue with the historical surroundings, while the polychrome glazing of Sauerbruch Hutton’s office building in London forms a deliberate counterpoint to the urban environment. As one can see, architecture has to come to terms with colour. There is no such thing as neutrality.

Résumé:
First published in 1992 to wide critical acclaim, ''Pictures from home'' is Larry Sultan’s pendant to his parents. Sultan returned home to Southern California periodically in the 1980s and the decade-long sequence moves between registers, combining contemporary photographs with film stills from home movies, fragments of conversation, Sultan’s own writings and other memorabilia. The result is a narrative collage in which the boundary between the documentary and the staged becomes increasingly ambiguous. Simultaneously the distance usually maintained between the photographer and his subjects also slips in an exchange of dialogue and emotion that is unique to this work. Significantly increasing the page count of the original book, this MACK design of ''Pictures from home'' clarifies the multiplicity of voices – both textual and pictorial – in order to afford a fresh perspective of this seminal body of work. Emphasising the cinematic motion of the family’s home videos, the Super-8 film stills have been newly digitised and magnified, with select scenes running full-bleed across double-page spreads. Meanwhile, Sultan’s photographs of his parents as they go about their daily lives – against the quintessential backdrop of the Reagan-era American dream – are supplemented with previously unpublished images. Most significantly, the book honours Sultan as the oft-hailed ‘King of Colour Photography’.

Résumé:
With "Atacama", Jamey Stillings again shares his distinctive aerial perspective to examine dramatic large-scale renewable energy projects, the visual dynamic of enormous mining operations and the stark beauty of the Atacama Desert, so often scarred by human activity. Chile produces a third of the world’s copper and has the largest known lithium reserves, and we utilize these resources daily in our cars, computers and smartphones. The country’s mining industry has traditionally been dependent on imported coal, diesel and natural gas for its energy. Yet the Atacama Desert has excellent solar and wind potential: new renewable energy projects there now supply significant electricity to the northern grid, transmit power to population centers in the south, and are reducing mining’s dependence on fossil fuel. Stillings’ aesthetic interest in the human-altered landscape and concerns for environmental sustainability are principal pillars of his work. His photography elicits a critical dialogue about meeting our needs and desires while seeking equilibrium between nature and human activity. "Atacama," the latest chapter in his ongoing project "Changing perspectives," shows how photography can concurrently be a source of inspiration, motivation and information, and reminds us that a carbon-constrained future is crucial to a responsible approach to life on earth.

// This monograph is dedicated to the French graphic designer Frédéric Teschner. Whether dealing with the visual arts, music, or theatre, Teschner’s approach has relied on graphic communication as a vehicle for the values of public service. He always strives to create a visual context for a dialogue between ordinary people and public cultural activities, and essentially sees the role of the graphic designer as interlocuter between design and its audience. A number of contributors offer detailed insight into various aspects of Teschner’s oeuvre in this comprehensive overview and tribute, which also includes a large portfolio of his work and a detailed chronological biography.
