Résumé:
Conceived by architect Charles W. Moore and begun in the context of social activism and dramatic institutional change during the 1960s, the Yale Building Project has contributed to the education of many of this country’s leading architects, serving as the model for "design-build" programs at universities nationwide. "The Yale Building Project : The First 40 Years" is the first comprehensive history of this important initiative. Every year since 1967, graduate students in the Yale School of Architecture have designed and constructed a building for a community–based client. This book documents each of the projects alongside essays that situate the program in its historical context, from students’ journeys to rural Appalachia to build community centers and a health clinic, to pavilions and recreational structures constructed throughout Connecticut, and affordable housing built in New Haven. Describing a program that has had a profound effect on American architectural culture, this book will serve as a valuable resource for architects, historians, students, and community planners.

Résumé:
After World War II, the American road trip began appearing prominently in literature, music, movies and photography. As Stephen Shore has written, “Our country is made for long trips. Since the 1940s, the dream of the road trip, and the sense of possibility and freedom that it represents, has taken its own important place within our culture.” Many photographers purposefully embarked on journeys across the U.S. in order to create work. Hundreds of them have continued the tradition of the photographic road trip on down to the present, from Stephen Shore to Taiyo Onorato, Nico Krebs, Alec Soth and Ryan McGinley. The Open Road considers the photographic road trip as a genre in and of itself, and presents the story of photographers for whom the American road is muse. The book features David Campany’s introduction to the genre and 18 chapters presented chronologically, each exploring one American road trip in depth through a portfolio of images and informative texts.

The included eyeglasses allow exceptional optical experiences, complemented by interactive experiments on the included CD-ROM. Texts, visual examples and CD-experiments allow readers to acquire the background information for their own creative work, and to answer the questions: How do optical illusions emerge? And how can our eyes be fooled at all?

Résumé:
This publication is based on an illustrated talk presented by architect and historian Fernanda Canales in June 2024 at the Vitra Design Museum as part of the Barragán Lecture series. It focuses on the Mexican architect Luis Barragán (1902–88), whose work occupies a permanent place in the canon of 20th-century architecture and continues to fascinate architectural scholars, connoisseurs and enthusiasts. Barragán strove for an "emotional architecture," claiming that "any work of architecture which does not express serenity is a mistake." He used raw materials such as stone or wood, and his preference for hidden light sources gives his interiors a particularly subtle and lyrical atmosphere. In her lecture, Canales deftly interweaves Barragán's biography with his major built works, which are characterized by a skillful approach to spatial and chromatic atmospheres and environments.

Résumé:
For ten years Camille Seaman has documented the rapidly changing landscapes of Earth's polar regions. As an expedition photographer aboard small ships in the Arctic and Antarctic, she has chronicled the accelerating effects of global warming on the jagged face of nearly fifty thousand icebergs. Seaman's unique perspective of the landscape is entwined with her Native American upbringing: she sees no two icebergs as alike; each responds to its environment uniquely, almost as if they were living beings. Through Seaman's lens, each towering chunk of ice—breathtakingly beautiful in layers of smoky gray and turquoise blue—takes on a distinct personality, giving her work the feel of majestic portraiture. Melting Away collects seventy-five of Seaman's most captivating photographs, lifeaffirming images that reveal not only what we have already lost, but more importantly what we still have that is worth fighting to save.

Résumé:
This publication offers an alternative account of one of the most fabled episodes in photographic history: the cross-country journeys that produced Stephen Shore’s luminous new vision of the American landscape, Uncommon Places. Along with his large-format camera, Shore also brought a 35mm Leica on his travels. The images made with it, on luminous colour slide film, are intimate, spontaneous and personal, while retaining Shore’s studied formal sensitivity. In these entirely unseen photographs, a parallel iteration of an iconic vision emerges like a piece of music played in a new key. The vocabulary is familiar: highways and homes, phone boxes, fast food and sun-strewn parking lots. But the alternative format unmistakably re-envisions these subjects through distinct experiments with composition, attitude, and colour. Transparencies uncovers both a detail-oriented survey of the American landscape of the 1970s and a rigorous, imaginative exercise in form by an undisputed modern master. With an afterword by Britt Salvesen, curator at LACMA, titled 'Ordinary Speech: The Vernacular in Stephen Shore’s Early 35mm Photography'.

Not only a complete monograph of Carme Pis architectural oeuvre, "Carme Pis : architectures" traces the development of her practice over several decades via an in-depth investigation of the recurring themes and concerns that inform her work. Through studies of significant city projects and selected works, critical contributions from Peter Smithson, Daniela Colafranceschi, Rafael Moneo, Pedro Azura, Rafael Argullol, Francis Rambert, Juan Jose Lahuerta, Josep Quetglas, Magdelena Jaume and from Carme Pis herself, come together to elucidate the motivations of one of the most compelling figures currently working in the contemporary architectural landscape. This publication journeys from Pis early collaborations with Enric Miralles, characterised by an exploration of natural materials and forms that merge with their setting, to the evolution of her own emphatic works a striking articulation of complex shapes and spaces that maintain a clear commitment to the quality of construction while perfectly integrating with the environment, whether natural or urban. "Carme Pis : architectures" is a comprehensive overview of the atypical architectural expression of Carme Pis truly unique and intriguing practice.

Résumé:
Berlin's history of conflict, violence, and transformation has created an arena of particular urban surfaces, from which the present-day city and its layered, wounded past are projected simultaneously. In this publication, cultural historian Stephen Barber explores the intimate connections between those surfaces and the works of art and film that have both incised Berlin's urban screens and been inspired by them. Drawing on a vast range of material - from the first films of Berlin in the 1890s to the city's place in contemporary digital art - this book takes the form of a series of image-propelled journeys across the face of Berlin and through its urban histories, excavating the ricochets among the city, art, and film. In Barber's hands, Berlin's walls become apertures that mediate the city's preoccupations and manias, damage and scars, strata and outgrowths, sexual obsessions, and urban vanishings. The Walls of Berlin is a cultural history of the city's memories-as well as its acts of forgetting-that illuminates overlooked spaces and the sensory presences that inhabit them.
