Philip Jodidio has collected numerous examples of the partnership between architecture and nature from throughout history and the world and presents them in one illustrated volume. From Frank Lloyd Wright's residential house Fallingwater in Bear Run, Philadelphia, to the Miho Museum in Japan built by I.M. Pei, and from the Olympic Stadium built for the 1972 games in Munich to the MoMA roof top garden in New York by Ken Smith, Jodidio demonstrates the many forms that the interplay between built structures and their environment can take. He examines aspects of the relationship between nature and architecture such as nature as inspiration; the imitation and mimicking of natural patterns; landscape design; ecologically sensitive structures; and artificial realities, among others.

Architectural collections are warehouses of knowledge: they are resources for historical plans and buildings, and they offer insight and ideas for the designs of tomorrow. However, in the age of computer-aided design, the sketches, plans and models that were once available for research and exhibitions are being replaced by bits and bytes on a variety of storage media whose lifetimes have no guaranteed length. The Architekturmuseum at the Technical University in Munich has one of the largest special collections of architecture in Europe. This publication presents its complex history while placing it in the context of other prominent international collections. Selected examples are used to discuss questions about collecting, research and the exhibition of architecture in the future.

Résumé:
Adolf Hitler’s makeover from rabble-rouser to statesman coincided with a series of dramatic home renovations he undertook during the mid-1930s. This provocative book exposes the dictator’s preoccupation with his private persona, which was shaped by the aesthetic and ideological management of his domestic architecture. Hitler’s bachelor life stirred rumors, and the Nazi regime relied on the dictator’s three dwellings — the Old Chancellery in Berlin, his apartment in Munich, and the Berghof, his mountain home on the Obersalzberg—to foster the myth of the Führer as a morally upstanding and refined man. Author Despina Stratigakos also reveals the previously untold story of Hitler’s interior designer, Gerdy Troost, through newly discovered archival sources.

Résumé:
With its head office in Munich, the architecture studio HildundK, consisting of Andreas Hild and Dionys Ottl, bases its design activities as a whole on a single premise: to produce modern architecture without the latter entering into conflict with the urban setting, historical tradition, local craftsmanship and, of course, the needs of users. Its projects are articulated around three fundamental types of intervention. The first consists of taking some datum or other of the surroundings, in particular the city of Munich, its history and building tradition, as a point of departure. The resonance of the context enables their constructed buildings to have an evocative power that goes beyond the formal. In fact, theirs is a way of doing things that is deliberately at odds with the notion of form as a starting point. Secondly, they tackle the issue of ornamentation as a basic part of their project designs by linking it to the artisanal decorative traditions of the region. Lastly, and without losing a proximity to the simplicity of traditional buildings and their decoration, they incorporate a tremendous sensitivity towards materials and contemporary technical conditions. In the last analysis, HildundK hope their architecture is understood by its users, that its cultural contents communicate and connect the public with the discipline of architecture by providing a response to their requirements. To quote Mechthild Stuhlmacher, author of one of the introductory texts: Andreas Hild and Dionys Ottl regard it as imperative to escape from an architectural discourse that is purely internal. In their view architecture must also be comprehensible to the layman if it is to survive as a discipline.

Résumé:
The four long narratives in The Emigrants appear at first to be the straightforward biographies of four Germans in exile. Sebald reconstructs the lives of a painter, a doctor, an elementary-school teacher, and Great Uncle Ambrose. Following (literally) in their footsteps, the narrator retraces routes of exile which lead from Lithuania to London, from Munich to Manchester, from the South German provinces to Switzerland, France, New York, Constantinople, and Jerusalem. Along with memories, documents, and diaries of the Holocaust, he collects photographs—the enigmatic snapshots which stud The Emigrants and bring to mind family photo albums. Sebald combines precise documentary with fictional motifs, and as he puts the question to realism, the four stories merge into one unfathomable requiem.

Résumé:
Venetian artist Carlo Scarpa (1906?78) was one of the outstanding architects of the twentieth century, creating buildings for museums in Venice, Florence, and Verona, as well as many other major buildings. This book focuses on a work that shows that approach to unforgettable effect: a tomb for businessman Giuseppe Brion in Treviso. In designing the tomb, Scarpa had complete freedom, working across a vast space to fuse buildings of fair-faced concrete with the surrounding landscape to create a magnificent work the invites meditation. Munich photographer Klaus Kinold documented the remarkable tomb, and his carefully composed pictures, both black-and-white and subtly using color, depict an otherworldly place that translates our ideas of growth and decay in an expansively constructed symbolism.

Résumé:
It is impossible to imagine Austrian architecture and contemporary history without Karl Schwanzer, who would have marked his hundredth birthday in 2018. His buildings, like the BMW administration building in Munich, caused quite a furor domestically and abroad; his institute at the Technical University of Vienna influenced offices like Coop Himmelb(l)au, Haus-Rucker-Co, Missing Link and ZUEND-UP. Posthumously, Schwanzer rose to cult status among his staff, students and clients, conferred especially for his passionate way of working, sparing no effort or expense, and for his relentless search for the optimum solution. In every sense, his life and work were unconventional. The idea to relate them in the form of a graphic novel is also quite unconventional, but certainly a logical consequence!

Résumé:
Although architecture alone cannot solve the problem of homelessness, the question arises: What and which roles can it play? How can architecture collaborate with other disciplines in developing ways to permanently house those who do not have a home? This volume seeks to explore and understand a reality that involves the expertise of national, regional, and city agencies, nongovernmental organizations, health-care fields, and academic disciplines. Through scholarly essays, interviews, analyses of architectural case studies, and research on the historical and current situation in Los Angeles, Moscow, Mumbai, New York, São Paulo, San Francisco, Shanghai, and Tokyo, this book unfolds different entry points toward understanding homelessness and some of the many related problems. The publication accompanies the exhibition “Who’s Next” by the Architekturmuseum München in Munich, Germany.
