Résumé:
Perhaps as ubiquitous as smartphones today, the books of hours were a private necessity in Europe during the Middle Ages. These manuscripts contained collections of texts that were meaningful to each owner, as well as an organized method of structuring the day around prayer by marking the passing of the canonical hours. Although highly personalized, with intricate miniatures and illuminations, all books of hours contained sections to be recited at regular intervals throughout the twenty-four hours of the day. In them, the public and the private timescales converged, crystallized into a material, perdurable form not devoid of beauty. "The book of hours" by Frida Escobedo is a modern exegesis of this extinct devotional practice: a project in which twenty-four objects were photographed at different intervals of time to capture their evolution, making a new calendar of matter and light. As humanity has transitioned to a secular understanding of time in which hours are organized and conceived in terms of productivity, The Book of Hours interrogates the place of contemplation in our era, its possibility and necessity. Through this book—a public display of a private collection of objects—readers are invited to contemplate these arrays of matter and experience the ways in which they once interacted with light, that burning needle in time’s template.

After completing a degree in architecture at Cornell University, Matta-Clark returned to his home city of New York. There he employed the term “anarchitecture,” combining “anarchy” and “architecture,” to describe the site-specific works he initially realized in the South Bronx.

Résumé:
Toby Paterson makes paintings, reliefs and constructions which explore the relationship between abstraction and reality. He has a keen interest in post-war modernist architecture which he deconstructs both materially and politically, developing a practice in which some works are almost understandable as architecture, while others are expressions of purely abstract form.

Looking at a considerable range of works spanning the entire career of Sol LeWitt (1928–2007) from seven of his famous ''Wall Drawings'' to sculptures such as ''Complex Form'' and ''Inverted Spiraling Tower'', and including the photo-series ''Autobiography'', this book explores the deeply intertwined relationship between LeWitt's work and architecture. Featuring a collaboration by the architect Rem Koolhaas- as a curator, for the first time ever- in dialogue with the curator Francesco Stocchi, ''Between the Lines'' addresses broad aspects of LeWitt's oeuvre, with the aim of moving beyond the divisions that traditionally separate architecture from art history (the flouting of which characterizes the artist's entire body of work). In particular, this book reformulates the still-popular assumption that an artwork must adapt to the architecture.

Résumé:
In this Dialogue on Art and Architecture, Ellsworth Kelly (born 1923) reminisces with Hans Ulrich Obrist about his early career, his teachers (Max Beckmann, Brancusi, Léger and Vantongerloo) and particularly on the relation of his work to architecture: “architects are usually the first people who understand my work,” he tells Obrist here, while describing his many collaborations in this field. Throughout this beautiful publication runs a series of collaged and overpainted postcards by Kelly, dating from 1949 to 1984, which are reproduced here for the first time. These postcards, referred to throughout the dialogue, are unlike any of Kelly's paintings and sculptures, particularly in their use of body imagery; others are closer to familiar Kelly terrain, as projections of torn colored paper forms onto found landscapes and architecture. This artist's book makes a wonderfully unusual record of a warm encounter.

Résumé:
In three recent video installations, Zachary Formwalt focuses on the architecture of OMA’s new Shenzhen Stock Exchange and the Amsterdam stock and commodities exchange by H.P. Berlage. Although our economy is dictated by financial transactions, the activity of trading itself has become increasingly remote, without actual human encounter. The architecture of the two buildings serves as a starting point for a investigation into the limitations of photography to represent global capital and into the interrelationships between financial capitalism and image-making.
