Résumé:
In the late 1970s Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015) was commissioned by architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill to create an artwork for the lobby of a new office building underway in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. Kelly responded with one of his most ambitious artworks to date, ''Color Panels for a Large Wall,'' an 18-panel painting executed in two versions. The larger, at over 125 feet wide, was the biggest painting he had ever made, and its trajectory would pass through not just Cincinnati but also Amsterdam, New York and Munich before ending up at its permanent home, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, where it has been prominently installed in the I.M. Pei–designed East Building since 2004.The smaller version, over 30 feet wide, remained in the artist's possession. This catalog tells the complete story of these two remarkable paintings.

Architects on Architects is a collection of essays and interviews rooted in one fascinating premise: What do the architects of today have to say about their predecessors? Based on a series of lectures organized by the Department of Architecture at the Technical University of Munich, this volume explores how architects from previous generations have influenced present-day professionals in the field. The essays touch on the relevance of historical concepts as they have been transmitted across generations and the ways in which today’s architects have used—and at times reshaped—those concepts to suit contemporary needs. The stimulating discussions involve, among others, Arno Lederer on Sigurd Lewerentz, Hans Kollhoff on Oswald Mathias Ungers, Tom Emerson on Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Mario Botta on Louis I. Kahn and Carlo Scarpa, and Donatella Fioretti on Walter Gropius and László Maholy-Nagy.

Using a typological structure (landscape, park, square, garden, promenade, etc.), Günther Vogt describes the theoretical foundation on which the successful projects of Vogt Landscape Architects are based. In recent years the offi ce has realized international projects in Europe and the United States, including a new type of city park for the Tate Modern in London (with Herzog & de Meuron); an “all-weather garden” with great poetic power at the Hyatt Hotel in Zürich (with Meili, Peter Architekten); an indoor tropical garden for the Novartis Campus in Basel (with Diener & Diener); and the exterior spaces of the Allianz Arena in Munich (with Herzog & de Meuron). This new and extended version of Miniature and Panorama also documents recent works, such as public realm and streetscape designs for the athletes’ village of the Olympic Games in London 2012

Résumé:
German culture in the twentieth century moved quickly and intensely, bound up with the politics of the country. Paul Renner (1878—1956) lived and worked through constituent episodes of this history, both embodying the patterns of his times and providing a critical commentary on them. In this book Christopher Burke provides the first extended account of an essential and still underrated figure. Beginning his career in the thick of the Munich cultural renaissance, Paul Renner worked as a ‘book artist’, applying values he had learnt as a painter to this everyday item of multiple production. An early and prominent member of the Deutscher Werkbund, he was committed to the values of quality in design, always tempered by a certain sobriety of attitude and style. In the 1920s Renner engaged with the radical modernism of that time, briefly in Frankfurt, and then in a more extended phase at the printing school at Munich. Under Renner’s leadership, and with teachers such as Georg Trump and Jan Tschichold, the school produced work of quiet significance. In those years Renner undertook the design of the now ubiquitous typeface Futura. Christopher Burke’s analysis of the design process reveals the characteristic Renner approach: he took up with current tendencies, but through an extended process of finely judged development, helped to deliver a product that has long-lasting quality. In the Nazi seizure of power of 1933, Renner was dismissed from his teaching post — in days recounted here in dramatic detail — and entered a state of ‘inner emigration’. Burke’s account of the Nazi years shows Renner negotiating events with dignity. After 1945, Renner lived in retirement, but entered public discussion of design issues as a voice of experience and sanity. "Paul Renner" is a work of discovery. As part of its fresh narrative and analysis, it includes much new illustrative material and the first full bibliography of Renner’s writings.

Résumé:
The architect Herman Hertzberger is one of the most important representatives of Dutch Structuralism. This movement, which emerged in 1960, is highly regarded in modern architecture. Structuralism takes as its starting point the idea that architecture should value the archetypal behaviors of humankind. Consequently, buildings should be inviting, and above all they must satisfy both the individual and the social needs of those who use them. Hertzberger gained international recognition for his office buildings, schools, and housing estates created between 1968 and 1990. In addition to fair-faced concrete and glass, they make use of precast concrete blocks, a “poor” construction material which contributes to their unique character. For this volume, photos by the Munich-based architectural photographer Klaus Kinold document Hertzberger’s masterpieces from their very earliest stages. Many of these buildings have since undergone significant changes, making Kinold’s images an important part of the historical record.

Résumé:
"German photo artist Thomas Ruff is a master of conceptual serial photography. He made a name for himself in the early eighties with oversized, superrealistic color portraits of his artist friends and as a pioneer of the Diasec process used to mount photographic images onto acrylic glass, thereby obviating frames, liberating photography from the print gallery and paving the way to the "grand gallery" museum walls for large-format photos. This collection presents selected works from Thomas Ruff's large-format series, beginning with his small Interiors, the large Portraits, his Architectural Photos, the Starry Skies, his abstract Substrata, the Nudes, which make use of pornographic material taken from the internet, and finally his latest creation: Stellar Landscapes. The book features essays by Thomas Weski and Okwui Enwezor and appears in conjunction with an extensive Thomas Ruff retrospective exhibition at the Haus der Kunst in Munich."

Despite the fact that he shaped Venice and its contemporary form, Eugenio Miozzi remains a little-known figure. Yet both locals and visitors experience his legacy every day, in particular when they cross his bridges: from the Ponte della Libertà, to the Ponte dell’Accademia; from the various bridges over the Rio Nuovo, to the exemplary Ponte degli Scalzi. Miozzi, chief engineer of the Commune of Venice from 1931 to 1954, carried out a large number of works and projects, including a vast modernist parking garage and the Casino on the Lido. The prolific engineer-architect played a role in the development of the Teatro La Fenice, made plans for the restoration of the city and the extension of the Tronchetto, and designed a translagoon road and a motorway from Venice to Munich. These projects and the others presented in this illustrated volume represent Miozzi’s tireless efforts to guarantee the city’s survival by combining its centuries-old traditions with a spirit of innovation.
