Résumé:
In recent years, the intersection between ecological thought and contemporary art has sparked a generative reflection encompassing sustainability, conservation, and survivability. Confronted with the climate catastrophe, ecology questions the feasibility of conserving collapsing ecosystems as well as our imperative of survival, alongside other humans, and non-humans, amidst the ruins of a world we have already irreversibly altered. In November 2023, the second edition of the Museo Ventuno conference, Museums at the Ecological Turn, curated for AMACI by Caterina Riva together with NERO, brought together voices and perspectives from inside and outside of the art institutions to intercept and amplify the debate around these issues. Reflecting on the role of museums and how they must embrace new forms of responsibility and awareness, this book gathers contributions from curators, philosophers and activists, artists and writers.

Résumé:
Over the last three decades, religious practices and belongings have gained increased visibility across the globe, turning secularity and its relationship with religion into subjects of intense interdisciplinary and international debate. Previously marginalized in gender studies, the secular and the religious now attract growing interest in academic and activist feminism, prompting a critical reflection on secularity's emancipatory potential. This publication aims to foster this interest by providing a platform for interdisciplinary and transregional discussions on the complex dynamics of secularity, religiosity, and gender, as well as new approaches to explore these relationships. The contributions examine the entanglements and boundaries of religions and secularities in everyday life, art, culture, and knowledge production. By presenting relevant case studies, this book underscores an understanding of religion as both a category of knowledge and a marker of identity.

Résumé:
What is magic? And what can it do? In this book, Jessica Backsell interrogates the magic of the art world and culture’s stubborn habit of foregrounding art as representative of an alternative value system. Through the empirical example of the freeport—luxury warehouses where valuable art is stored for preservation and taxation purposes—Backsell explores the implications of understanding the art world through contingent entanglements and practices. Examining the contested site of the freeport, Backsell addresses the dichotomous “culture v. capitalism” debate by showing how magic is not an innate and mysterious quality. Rather, it is a practice, a central yet unexplored element of curatorial toolboxes, that unfolds through what Backsell denotes as the enactment of “conspicuous withdrawal.” This insight, she argues, sheds new light and understanding on broader political issues in contemporary market society.

Résumé:
Since the end of the nineteenth century, the division between nature and culture has been fundamental to Western thought. In this groundbreaking work, renowned anthropologist Philippe Descola seeks to break down this divide, arguing for a departure from the anthropocentric model and its rigid dualistic conception of nature and culture as distinct phenomena. In its stead, Descola proposes a radical new worldview, in which beings and objects, human and nonhuman, are understood through the complex relationships that they possess with one another. "The Ecology of Others" presents a compelling challenge to anthropologists, ecologists, and environmental studies scholars to rethink the way we conceive of humans, objects, and the environment. Thought-provoking and engagingly written, it will be required reading for all those interested in moving beyond the moving beyond the confines of this fascinating debate.

First translation into English on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the publication of the "General Theory of Urbanization 1867" by Ildefons Cerdà, an essential work on urban development. In 1867 Ildefons Cerdà published his "Teoria general de la urbanitzación." In this text, the "science of building cities," understood as a phenomenon, became a new discipline with a broad economic, social and cultural impact on the life of the people of the city. Coinciding with 150 years since its publication, its first translation into English is being presented along with the publishing online at urbanization.org with the statistics transformed into interactive graphics and open data, with the aim of expanding the knowledge of Cerda`'s work and encouraging debate on the process of "urbanization" in the future.

Résumé:
"Atlas of the Copenhagens" explores the urban territories of Copenhagen, often identified in city-ranking indices as the world’s most sustainable and livable city. Such claims position Copenhagen as an opportune site to engage in a wider debate on contemporary urban ideals, prompting questions such as: What is sustainability or livability? On whose terms are these concepts defined? What agendas are included or excluded? The increasing authority attributed to city-ranking metrics prompts a second line of inquiry. How are the territorial and conceptual limits of a city drawn to define it as an object of measurement? What is Copenhagen as a territory in this case – the urban core, the municipality, the urbanized area, the regional urban system, or…? And how does this impact our understanding of something as complex and manifold as a city?

Résumé:
Originally published as Mille Plateaux, volume 2 of Capitalisme et Schizophrénie, 1980. A Thousand Plateaus continues the work Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari began in Anti-Oedipus and has now become established as one of the classic studies of the development of critical theory in the late twentieth century. It occupies an important place at the center of the debate reassessing the works of Freud and Marx, advancing an approach that is neither Freudian nor Marxist but which learns from both to find an entirely new and radical path. It presents an attempt to pioneer a variety of social and psychological analyses free of the philosophical encumbrances criticized by postmodern writers. A Thousand Plateaus is an essential text for feminists, literary theorists, social scientists, philosophers, and others interested in the problems of contemporary Western culture.

Résumé:
Architecture's complicated relationship with wider social issues is laid bare through the process of landmarking, in which only one of six criteria—as outlined by the United States National Historic Landmarks program—mentions architectural merit. Furthermore, while structures were previously landmarked after having withstood the test of time, we now consider preserving comparatively young buildings and debate the historical value of unbuilt structures. By designating local, national, and international landmarks and landmark districts, societies officially declare which buildings and places possess cultural value. What are the bases for making these decisions, and what does this mean for the future? With many important buildings facing the wrecking ball and an increasing number of buildings receiving landmark status, it is time to critically discuss how we both let go of and hold onto the past.
