Résumé:
The works of Mies van der Rohe are often described as silent, or as withdrawal or negation, as the last line of resistance against the forces of technology and capitalism, precisely because they interiorize these forces, but thereby also allow us to reflect on them. This essay attempts to understand the unavoidable plurality of this silence, to unearth its philosophical genealogy, and to connect it to the present moment, when the possibility and very sense of criticality as a strategy of negativity seem more questinable than ever. Sven-Olov Wallenstein teaches philosophy and aesthetics at the University College of Södertörn in Stockholm, and is the editor-in-chief of Site magazine.

Résumé:
The Japanese term "boro" refers to rags and fabrics used for far longer than their expected lifespan. In order to recycle, transform, and create “new” textiles from old, various techniques are used such as patching and mending, reinforcing with simple stitch-work, or weaving from rags. Boro textiles were created throughout Japan from the 19th century into the 1950s, although the phenomenon can be traced far earlier. Published along with an exhibition in Stockholm, this book surveys the history of boro and examines its changing social, economic, and aesthetic status as a visual and conceptual source of inspiration for textile artists and designers, both in Japan and internationally.

Résumé:
''Urbanizing suburbia'' considers the relationship between three current processes underway in global cities: the hyper-gentrification of inner cities, the financialization of housing, and the structural changes occurring in the suburbs. The rocketing price of housing in cities around the world has led to a sizable exodus of residents from the inner cities, with many of those displaced settling in the suburban belts. This change in demographics, coupled with specific regeneration strategies implemented by municipalities, is leading to a remaking of suburbia. The book examines these changes using the examples of four key global European cities: Amsterdam, Berlin, London, and Stockholm. It is a first attempt at understanding the three processes discussed here within one comprehensive explanatory framework.

Résumé:
"Tall wood buildings" have been at the foreground of innovative building practice in urban contexts for a number of years. From London to Stockholm, from Vancouver to Melbourne timber buildings of up to 20 storeys have been built, are under construction or being considered. This dynamic trend was enabled by developments in the material itself, prefabrication and more flexibility in fire regulations. The low CO2 footprint of wood - often regionally sourced - is another strong argument in its favour. This publication explains the typical construction types such as panel systems, frame and hybrid systems. An international selection of 13 case studies is documented in detail with many specially prepared construction drawings, demonstrating the range of the technology.

A multitude of port cities dot Europe’s coastline, each with its own history and relationship to sea transportation and development. In the era of climate change, these cities can offer paradigms and guidance for sustainable development. Taking a comprehensive, map-based approach, "Port city atlas" offers visualizations of 100 port city territories located on four seas and connected through shared waters—from Amsterdam, Antwerp, Barcelona, Bilbao, Bordeaux, Bremen, Calais, Cork, Dover, Dublin, Felixstowe, Fredericia, Ghent, Hamburg, Helsinki, Kiel, Københavns and La Rochelle to Limerick, Liverpool, London, Lübeck, Malmø, Palermo, Ravenna, Riga, Rønne, Rotterdam, Sköldvik, Stockholm, Tallinn, Venice, Zeebrugge and countless others. Conceived as a reference work, "Port city atlas" provides a foundation for comparative analysis beyond the case-study approach, offering a uniquely sea-oriented take on the understanding and urban design of Europe.

Founded by Fredric Benesch and Katarina Lundeberg in 2009, Stockholm-based firm In Praise of Shadows Architecture engages in a wide range of projects of varied scales and typologies. This first monograph on their work features some forty buildings and projects from the years 2009 to 2024. The selection includes small boathouses and garden pavilions, private homes, and housing developments, as well as retail spaces, schools, and library buildings. The ideas and designs of In Praise of Shadows Architecture are remarkable, revealed in buildings that share an elegant signature that manifests itself in the choice and shaping of materials and a focus on the spatial experience. Many of them are timber constructions, as sustainability is a core part of their philosophy, as well as a special interest in Swedish modernist heritage and the famous architectural culture of the Swiss canton of Grisons.

Résumé:
What is an object? This question was addressed by Graham Harman, the originator of object-oriented philosophy and a central figure of speculative realism, in a lecture at Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Providing a thorough exposition of the object from an ontological standpoint, and putting forward a concept of the object beyond reductionism, Harman declares an approach that brings together philosophy and the arts where an object is not reducible to its components or effects and must instead be approached obliquely or indirectly. The lecture was held on the occasion of "Sculpture after Sculpture," an exhibition of work by Katharina Fritsch, Jeff Koons, and Charles Ray. In the exhibition hall with the show’s thirteen sculptures, thirteen questions about the object were posed to Graham Harman by interlocutors from the worlds of art, business studies, and philosophy.

Résumé:
By many art history accounts, the art of the twentieth century was decided by Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp. In these versions, Picasso stands for prolific production, a fierce expressionism, endless research of the picture plane and a sense of voracious creativity; whereas Duchamp stands for cerebral brilliance, rejection of optical pleasure and a subtle but all-pervasive conceptual sabotage and irony. (Of course, they shared as many traits, including an appetite for provocation and the recognition of eros as a fundamental, animating life principle.) So who was right? This volume, published for a show at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, argues for both sides of the coin, looking at various aspects of both oeuvres, including Picasso’s fascination with the Minotaur and Duchamp’s Rrose Selavy alter ego. The book is appropriately divided in two halves separated by a reverse binding.
