This secret, still-classified programme occurred during and after the Algerian War (1954–1962). Meticulously culled together from numerous sources by architectural historian Samia Henni, this publication’s wealth of materials documenting the violent history of France’s activities in the Algerian desert offers a rich repository for all those concerned with histories of nuclear weapons and engaged at the intersections of spatial, social, and environmental justice, as well as anticolonial archival practices.

Résumé:
With its reliance on extracted materials and an intense use of resources, the process of construction begs the question whether real sustainability in architecture and planning is possible. For some, a short-term solution is "greenwashing": adopting strategies of simulated commitment instead of investing in actual change toward fewer emissions. NGOs have called out large companies for "low integrity" pledges, pointing out the systemic ecological injustice that the built environment creates through material, wealth and labor extractivism. As institutionalized and commodified greenwashing hollows out the term, how do architects and designers position their work beyond a flattening universalistic understanding of sustainability? The first volume of a forthcoming series, "On architecture and greenwashing" is a collection of essays that presents a cross section of positions on architecture and its political economies, and explores ways to correct course in the face of the climate crisis.

Résumé:
To build is to destroy, writes Charlotte Malterre-Barthes. From steel bolts to concrete blocks to wood flooring to polyester insulation panels, every single component of the built environment is the product of extractive processes. Driven by greedy economies, the global enterprise of space production expands, impacting climate, earth, water, humans, and non-humans everywhere. However housing is both a human right and the mandate of design disciplines: How to navigate the need for housing versus the destructive practice of construction? To pause new construction—even if momentarily, creates a radical thinking framework for alternatives to the current regime of space production and its suspect growth imperative. Engaging with unsettling questions, "A moratorium on new construction" envisions a massive value shift for our existing stock.

Climate-friendly construction is essential if we are to ensure that future generations can enjoy comfortable living spaces. Design and the choice of materials help to considerably reduce the climate impact of buildings. The techniques featured in this book come from all five climatic zones and many are drawn from non-European and bygone societies. The low-tech approaches, illustrated in schematic drawings and explained in texts, are a source of inspiration for the design of sustainable and energy-autonomous building structures. "Architecture follows climate" provides the first in-depth and comprehensive overview of passive building techniques that have been tried and tested for centuries.

Climate change, extreme weather conditions, the degradation of biodiversity, CO2 and fine-dust pollution in cities demand action. How can architecture make a contribution to achieving a paradigm shift? Can architecture not only be designed to be removable and recyclable, but to be additionally green as well? Can architecture also be an ecological system? What is blue-green architecture? Architects face the demand to fully exploit unused potential and find ways to use plants as tools for design. This is both the case in the development of spaces as well as urban environments, but particularly on buildings themselves. "Green facades" provides architects with the necessary specialist knowledge to competently deal with the living architecture on the building envelope.

Résumé:
There has never been a more important time to understand how to make the best use of local natural resources and create buildings that do not rely on stripping our planet or transporting materials across the globe. First published in 2017, Habitat gathers the world's leading experts on vernacular architecture to examine how local buildings have stood the test of time and offer lessons for the future. Arranged by climate zone- Tropical, Dry, Temperate, Continental, and Polar- each regional section presents buildings in their environments, showing how climatic conditions and vegetation affect the evolution of building styles. This central part of Habitat is bookended by a range of essays exploring the economic and anthropological aspects of shelter, while the book's reference section offers information on materials science and engineering, including how buildings have been adapted to contend with natural disasters.

Résumé:
"Leaf plan" will illustrate comprehensive design approaches to address climate change, urban metabolism, temporary uses, landscape multifunctionality, cohabitation through new modes of urban design based on criteria of flexibility and adaptability. Trento is the experimental territory where the innovative process, methodologies and theoretical reflection have been tested above the framework of the three-year research project "TUT Trento Urban Transformation". The book is structured around the five challenges (Ecological, Accessible, Smart, Welcoming and Beauty) proposed by the TUT research group for the Trento Leaf Plan, the new metabolic plan for the city of Trento. Beside the innovative field-test experimentations, the holistic methodological approach proposed by the book will be transferable and adapted in other metropolitan contexts to enhance the urban ecological transition. The publication, edited by the TUT research group, will include theoretical essays, critical selection of reference projects, operational tools, and interviews with experts in ecological transition, sustainable mobility, co-design approach, sharing, and urban resilience.

Résumé:
With the ever-increasing growth of the world’s population, there is a universal need for development that can sustain humanity, in settlements of all sizes, without the depletion of our environmental heritage. For this to be effective it is essential that local, national and international frameworks be set up to ensure the application and utilisation of sustainable development objectives. This book addresses the concept of sustainable place. It looks at the distinctive features of place associated with man’s interaction with landscape, architecture and master planning and investigates the potential of these features to form the constituent parts of a framework of assessment. It outlines a framework for determining the energy and environmental capabilities of a locality for sustainable development in consideration of its social, economic, political and cultural prerequisites – a framework that may be applied locally but that also bears a direct relationship to national and international concerns for sustainability. Sustainable Place puts forward the potential elements of an aesthetic for sustainability which may be used anywhere in the world, to facilitate human progress whilst avoiding the disastrous environmental consequences that ill-considered development too often entails.

Passive solar heating and passive cooling--approaches known as natural conditioning--provide comfort throughout the year by reducing, or eliminating, the need for fossil fuel. Yet while heat from sunlight and ventilation from breezes is free for the taking, few modern architects or builders really understand the principles involved. Now Dan Chiras, author of the popular book The Natural House, brings those principles up to date for a new generation of solar enthusiasts. The techniques required to heat and cool a building passively have been used for thousands of years.
