Ironically, its negative connotations have made the gothic an ideal symbol of rebellion for a wide range of cultural outsiders. Popularly associated with black-clad teenagers and rock musicians, gothic fashion encompasses not only subcultural styles (from old-school goth to cyber-goth and beyond) but also high fashion by such designers as Alexander McQueen, John Galliano of Christian Dior, Rick Owens, Olivier Theyskens, and Yohji Yamamoto. Fashion photographers, such as Sean Ellis and Eugenio Recuenco, have also drawn on the visual vocabulary of the gothic to convey narratives of dark glamour. As the text and lavish illustrations in this book suggest, gothic fashion has deep cultural roots that give it an enduring potency.

On voit parfois en lui un précurseur de la science-fiction, un prophète visionnaire des sociétés du XXe siècle, ou même l’inventeur avant l’heure de la télévision, du téléphone et du voyage en avion… Contre ces raccourcis quelque peu anachroniques, cet ouvrage a pour ambition de replacer les grandes anticipations de Robida dans leur contexte, celui de la presse satirique et de ses cibles, mais aussi celui des logiques du rire au XIXe siècle : les transports, les médias, les femmes, la technophilie, les spectacles… c’est toute la culture de l’époque qui est passée au crible de sa verve satirique à travers une technique d’exagération qui le conduit à imaginer inlassablement ce que pourraient donner dans l’avenir les mutations qui transforment en profondeur le XIXe siècle finissant.
