Résumé:
Despite the significance of the natural sciences for humanity’s present and future, the principles of today’s scientific practices are often not exposed to the broad social discourse they deserve. Through a combination of philosophy and photography, Jana Hartmann produces a visual exploration of the history of alchemy and science. In the book, she initiates an intriguing dialogue on reductionistic and holistic worldviews, using excerpts from both alchemical writings and modern scientific publications, interwoven with selectively framed images of scientific phenomena. In examining humanity’s conquest of nature, Hartmann fosters curiosity towards a world that all too often remains opaque.

Résumé:
This book brings together fifteen projects by the French architect Jean-Christophe Quinton carried out between 2002 and 2021. The architectural projects presented are all isolated in remote locations, so the topography and the panorama are central to Quinton’s formal and creative process. The observation drawing enriches the information of the first visual contact with these places, endowing it with temporality. The project drawing is an exploration of their complexity, achieving a synthesis and discarding non-essential details. From the drawings spring the rules, the dimensions and the geometries that will constitute the system of things built or buildable

This volume is the result of a fascinating investigation by international experts into the influences of modernist architecture in the Arab world. Nine case studies provide the foundation for a thorough exploration of the relevant cultural-historical, sociopolitical, climatic and demographic aspects. Questions concerning the region’s reciprocal relationship with modernist architecture in the period from 1945 to 1973 are investigated through the biographies of selected buildings and building complexes from Iraq, Lebanon, Kuwait, Syria, Palestine, Jordan, Egypt and Morocco. Texts, contemporary images, architectural drawings and archival material are used to document the process from commissioning and design through to completion and building use.

Résumé:
The Gothic cathedrals of the middle ages are among the world's greatest architectural achievements. Looking up at the soaring vaulted ceiling of a gothic church, it is impossible not to marvel at the seemingly unending design variations of these transcendent structures. Photographer David Stephenson continues his exploration of the architecturally sublime by focusing his camera on the amazing vaulted ceilings of the medieval churches, cathedrals, and basilicas of Europe. Stephenson presents more than eighty romanesque and gothic vaults in kaleidoscopic photographs that reveal their complex geometrical structures, decorative detailing, and ornamental painting in ways they have never before been seen.
