Modernisation in the 20th century has deeply transformed Japanese society, bringing economic wealth and social well-being, but also increasing divisions and specialisation in society. This transformation has been increasingly questioned in recent years, and finds expression in architectural projects. The catalogue for the Japanese Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, curated by Momoyo Kaijima, one of the founders of Atelier Bow-Wow, this volume examines the role of architectural drawings in this reappraisal, as they form the basis on which a common approach in the design of individualised yet shared environments in today’s globalised society can be formulated. It proposes architectural ethnography as a methodology of social engagement.

Résumé:
The third and final instalment in the “Is This Rural?” series focuses on the intermediate territory: the most indeterminate in terms of use, the setting where the most complex situations occur, and where the mix of uses is part of its identity. An analysis of this diffuse and increasingly expanded portion of the environment originates a series of explorations towards possible futures in which architecture is obliged to enter into dialogue with the natural sciences. Besides essays by architect and urbanist Javier Mozas and Wroclaw-based PROLOG +1, it also features works by Colectivo C733, B-Architecten, Atelier Fanelsa, KOSMOS Architects, Rural Office for Architecture, and others.

Résumé:
For Toyo Ito, architecture is not so much a work of art but a mirror reflecting the times. From modest beginnings with a small atelier in 1971, he has grown to become one of the foremost practitioners of conceptual architecture, and was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2013. Covering topics like architecture for a consumption-oriented society, the pursuit of abstract beauty, public buildings and Ito’s “white period”, this monograph of collected works allows an unparalleled view into his development and work through the years. Besides an extensive and insightful conversation with Terunobu Fujimori, the book contains five interviews with Ito focusing on specific projects and periods.

A.J. Lode Janssens is one of Belgium’s most idiosyncratic architects and a radical educator. He was cofounder of the experimental studio Atelier Alpha and the Sint-Lucas Werkgemeenschap, a workshop linking architectural education, practice and research, and operated in close collaboration with ILAUD, the International Laboratory of Architecture and Urban Design. This publication presents The Balloon, an all-but-unknown temporary pneumatic home experiment, built in 1973 in Humbeek, where he lived with his family until 1986. Lode Janssens considered it an uncompromising ephemeral attempt at de-architecturalization and living in harmony with nature: a cave-dwelling, a work-in-progress, an empirical residence. This publication accompanies the eponymous exhibition at CIVA in Brussels.
