Résumé:
From the grandiose histories of monumental state building projects to the minutiae of street signs and corner cafés, from the rebuilding of capital cities to the provision of the humble public toilet, "Clean living under difficult circumstances" argues for the city as a socialist project. This essay collection spans a period from immediately before the 2008 financial crash to the year of the pandemic. Against the business-as-usual responses to both crises, Owen Hatherley outlines a vision of the city as both a venue for political debate and dispute as well as a space of everyday experience, one that we shape as much as it shapes us. Incorporated here are the genres of memoir, history, music and film criticism, as well as portraits of figures who have inspired new ways of looking at cities, such as the architect Zaha Hadid, the activist and urbanist Jane Jacobs, and thinkers such as Mark Fisher and Adam Curtis. Throughout these pieces, Hatherley argues that the only way out of our difficult circumstances is to imagine and try to construct a better modernity.

Résumé:
The contemporary context is defined by a unique conjuncture. On one hand, we witness the revival of the radical architecture that from the avant-garde experiments of the origins recovers creative processes and iconographic fragments while nullifying the original ideological and political values. On the other hand, we see social protests in defense of fundamental rights of democracy, as in 1968. Architecture is now reinvestigating those ephemeral experiments that have endured half a century as new "stone monuments" capable of indicating new perspectives for both research and design. Placing UFO group at the core of the contemporary debate means investigating their formal and seductive aspects, but also the ideological, political and social values with which objects, installations and happenings have been innervated, transforming them into devices of an architecture nourished by literature, art and political commitment for the foundation of an eloquent and activist project even more radical than the well-known Superstudio and Archizoom. The collaboration between Beatrice Lampariello and False Mirror Office lead to a monograph focused on the UFO’s work and an evaluation of their legacy relative to contemporary architecture.

Résumé:
This publication is a comprehensive reader analysing the role of modern architecture, city planning and consumption in the construction of the Swedish welfare state. The book draws mainly from the formative phase of the Swedish model, but also on European and American examples, and attempts to highlight the contradictions and complexities of the process of modernisation. The book provides an in-depth, multilayered account of the process of modernisation; whilst also highlighting the difficulties found. The debate is enriched from a diverse range of contributors including architects, researchers and leading academics from across the globe. It includes an introduction from Helena Mattsson and Sven-Olov Wallenstein and contributions from academics from New York’s Columbia University and London’s UCL; alongside architects in the field. The essays explore the construction of the welfare state, contextualising this in relation to the political and social factors of the time, consumers and spectacles — from housing to national marketing programmes. Specific case studies are featured and the reader ends with a section dealing with the more general problem of historiography.

Résumé:
When it was completed in 1911, the Goldman & Salatsch Building in Vienna, commonly known as the Looshaus, incited controversy for its austerity and plainness. It represented a stark rejection of the contemporary preference for ornamentation, though its architect, Adolf Loos (1870-1933), had intended it to preserve Viennese tradition within a new modernist language. The heated debate that ensued among critics and the public set the project apart, distinguishing it as one of the most important and contentious buildings of the early 20th century. In celebration of the Looshaus's centennial year, Christopher Long, a leading authority on Viennese architectural history, brings to light extensive new research and careful analysis that dispel long-held myths about Loos, his building, and its critical reception. The book, which features new color photography and a vast array of archival materials in print for the first time, tells the remarkable story of the Looshaus's design and construction, the political and social restlessness it reflected, and the building's fundamental role in defining the look of modernism.

Résumé:
Issue 85 of Texte zur Kunst is dedicated to art historiography. This is now the third time that we seek to shed light on the methods and principles of this humane discipline, the discourses of which form the crucial foundation of our magazine. While the 1994 issue under the heading “Art History Under Construction” put the import of theories from the Anglo-American countries to Germany up for debate, an issue from 2006 was concerned with reflecting on the state of affairs of a discipline that at the time was extremely influenced by visual studies and an increasing enthusiasm for “contemporary art”. The current issue, in contrast, focuses on the norms to which historiography is subjected and the effects produced by its view to the past. In seven essays, common art-historical paradigms are called into question and examined a new perspective. Established academic notions are revised on the one hand; while selected themes are taken up to elucidate the principles of knowledge and theory production on the other.
