The paintings of Balthus, one of the most enigmatic and poetic figures in 20th century art, long remained a mystery - just like Balthus himself who persistently fended off all intrusions into his private life. In the late 70s, the aging master finally settled down in the Grand Chalet, a splendid and spacious 18th century timber house in a remote Swiss mountain area. Both house and occupants remained strictly "off limits" to media and public alike, until 1993 when the ban was graciously lifted for Japanese photographer Kishin Shinoyama. Not only was he allowed to photograph the Grand Chalet, its rooms and the family life there, but he was admitted to the inner sanctum, Balthus' studio, located in a roomy atelier outside. The present selection offers a unique glimpse into the world of an artist whose paintings, personality, lifestyle, and career add up to no less than a 20th century complete art work.

Résumé:
Japan is becoming a popular travel destination for more and more architects today. With its wide variety of architecture, it is both a source of fascination and inspiration. Over a number of years, the review Detail has been consistently documenting the construction activities which have taken place in Japan, and this book draws on the best of their experience and connections to present and analyse with plans and details the most interesting buildings from various architectural trends in contemporary Japan, including Ando's Museum for Contemporary Art in Naoshima, Toyo Ito's Mediathek, a residential building by Kazuyo Sejima, and a temple gallery in Kyoto by Takashi Yamaguchi. Introductory essays discuss the developments in Japanese architecture, and together with portraits of not only well-known Japanese architects and offices, but also young offices such as Atelier Bow Wow, this volume provides a stimulating discussion of current Japanese building in the context of traditional architecture.

Résumé:
"Dutch architects in booming China" presents more than 80 projects (also on show in the exhibition of the same name) which are lavishly illustrated and described in detail. Together, they present a fascinating and unique picture of Dutch design energy for China. Among them are: the State Television in Beijing (Rem Koolhaas, OMA), Guang Dong Museum in Guangzhou (UN Studio), Sleeping Dragon in Hong Kong (Atelier Dutch), Xintian International Kindergarten (NEXT Architects) and Guo Tai Bridge in Tianjin (Verburg Hoogendijk Architecten). The projects are accompanied by four essays, written by China experts. The regional planner Ton Kreukels describes the history of urban development in China. The Shanghai-based architect Kok-Meng Tan discusses Chinese architecture and urbanism at the present moment and takes a look behind the scenes of Chinese architectural practice. Marlies Buurman records the experiences of the more than thirty Dutch offices working in China, and Maarten Kloos gives an introduction to the projects by Dutch architects who are working worldwide.

Résumé:
The resurgence of drawing is not merely a retrograde trend, but an affirmation of the continued importance of sketching as part of the design process. Architects' Sketchbooks presents pages from the private sketchbooks of a wide international spectrum of architects, who use drawing to express their spatial ideas while revealing their unique thought processes. Sketches from some 85 architects and studios are featured, including Will Alsop, Architects Atelier Ryo Abe, Shigeru Ban, Elemental, Thom Faulders, Norman Foster, Carlos Jiménez, Alessandro Mendini and Office dA. Their works range from simple line drawings and clear perspectives to more abstract, artistic compositions, from quick freehand to measured mapping, from spontaneous squiggles on scrap paper to careful drawings on art paper. Accompanying texts by editor Will Jones include comments by the architects and profile how they use sketches to help evolve their initial inspirations and concepts into more developed ideas, revealing the artistry behind the built world.

Résumé:
Psycho Buildings: Artists and Architecture marks the fortieth anniversary of London's Hayward gallery--itself an architectural icon, and one of the few remaining examples of the 1960s Brutalist style. The exhibition brings together the work of artists--including Atelier Bow-Wow, Michael Beutler, Los Carpinteros, Gelitin, Mike Nelson, Ernesto Neto, Tobias Putrih, Tomas Saraceno, Do-Ho Suh and Rachel Whiteread--who create habitat-like structures and architectural environments that are mental and perceptual spaces as much as physical ones. The works in this book revisit and reanimate the history of Modernist design while reminding us that built spaces can be defined in social, political, psychological, physical and aesthetic terms. An invaluable exploration of this contemporary trend, the volume includes essays by Hayward Director Ralph Rugoff, Jane Rendell and Brian Dillon. In addition, each artist profile includes a text by a different author, including Francis McKee, Tumelo Mosaka, Midori Matsui, Brian Dillon, Paulo Herkenhoff, David Greene, Francesco Manacorda, Tom Morton, Miwon Kwon and Iain Sinclair.

Résumé:
In the late 1980s, Japan was awash in seemingly unlimited wealth and rising toward what would be the peak of its modern economic success, power, and influence. In 1991 the same lethal combination of risky loans, inflated stocks, and real estate speculation that created this "bubble economy" caused it to burst, plunging the country into its worst recession since World War II. New Zealand–born architect Thomas Daniell arrived in Japan at the dawn of this turbulent decade. After the Crash is an anthology of essays that draw on first-hand observations of the built environment and architectural culture that emerged from the economically sober post-bubble period of the 1990s. Daniell uses projects and installations by architects such as Atelier Bow Wow, Toyo Ito, and the metabolists to illustrate the new relationships forged, most of necessity, between architecture and society in Japan. Tom Daniell is a practicing architect, critic, and educator who has based himself in Kyoto, Japan since the early 1990s.
