Description:
The project series documents "La Mia Scuola D'Architettura" a series of photographs of the Dolomites at the time of Pettena's childhood. The landscape, considered as his school of architecture, is "simply photographed and catalogued, thereby acknowledging at one and the same time the inevitable supremacy of nature, as "begetter" of architecture, and the acceptance of this lesson both conceptually and in its infinite spatial and linguistic." [1] The project series contains photographs and a printout out of a photo montage of natural geological formation. Description:
This project series documents the "Rumble" Sofa, a couch designed by Pettena in 1967 and produced in 1968 by Gufram, an Italian seat and furniture manufacturer based in Barolo. The "Rumble" Sofa was part of the furniture at Pettena's studio-home." […] The design of this couch […] derives from the experience of living in a spacious place, originally a 19th century studio for artists, in which the furnishings had to suit the scale of the place and not that of the being." [1] The project series contains sketches, plans and details of the couch, as well as videos and photographs of the couch showing its various possible shapes and usages. It also includes a small wooden model with movable blocks, each block represents one of the cushions of the couch. Description:
This project series documents five of the fifteen proposals submitted by Pettena for the Trigon competition in Graz, Austria, in 1971. The proposals documented in this project series are the following: Proposal n° 7 "Imprisonment" and "Architectural project #2 (Planes crossing)"; Proposal n° 11 "Instantaneous birth"; Proposal n° 12 "Conservazione"; Proposal n° 13 "Sedie e tavolo d’erba"; and Proposal n° 14 "Grass Architecture" I, II, and III. Pettena won the first prize for both his proposal "Imprisonment" and "Architectural Project #2" (Proposal n° 7) and for "Grass Architecture" I and II (Proposal n° 14). In these proposals, Pettena "questioned the temporal dimension of architecture as well as its relationship with nature." [1] The proposal "Grass Architecture" consists of shapes of grass rising from the ground, creating a perishable form of architecture coming from within and becoming part of the territory. The "Imprisonment" and "Architectural Project #2" proposals are a variation of Pettena's previous performance project "Cancellazione di uno stato" in 1970. These proposals consist of "trails of passing airplanes crisscrossing? the sky, creating the outlines of a grid of clouds. Here, the legacy of the grid in modern architecture is rendered formless, as if “naturalized” by the evaporation of the clouds, subject to chance and the freely drifting trails left by the airplanes." [2] The project series contains presentation drawings (five original drawings, seventeen reprographic copies, and four photographic reproductions), for Pettena's proposals "Imprisonment" and "Architectural project #2 (Planes crossing)", "Instantaneous birth", "Conservazione", "Sedie e tavolo d’erba", and "Grass Architecture" I, II, and III. The project series also includes photographs of models for the "Grass Architecture" proposal. Description:
The project series documents the landscape design "Montagne Naturali" designed by Pettena for the Montellori estate and farm, in Fucecchio, near Florence), in 2014. The installation consisted of a series of metal trellises of various shapes and sizes on which grew shrubs and bushes to create a wall to hide the farming machinery. "[...] architecture is given what is due architecture, that is structure and functionality, and nature is granted the final result, which will not necessarily coincide with the intentions of the designer, whose intervention is predominantly ‘an oneiric quotation’." [1] The project series contains sketches and a booklet with a sketch, plans of the trellises, and drawings. Description:
The project series documents the digitally created installation "Mother Nature" by Pettena in 2011. The project consists of a photograph of a rock formation on the edge of the water which was digitally modified to include a human figure nested in. "What is presented here in an almost didactic manner, by inserting a human figure into a setting prepared by nature, is the natural imbalance between the former and the infinite potentialities of the environment, which can only be known in part by someone who, accepting this situation of inferiority, makes use of it to acquire the capacity for a more conscious observation." Tumbleweeds Catcher (1972)
AP207.S1.1972.PR03
Description:
The project series documents "Tumbleweeds Catcher", an installation by Pettena and a group of his students from the University of Utah, in Salt Lake City, in 1972. The installation consisted of a tower-scaffold built on a vacant lot near the city centre and covered with mesh so it could capture the tumbleweeds blown by the wind. Through this installation Pettena's intention was to "highlight the 'work of the land', the tumbleweeds moved by the wind and intercepted by the mesh of the tower, 'naturalize' it, contaminate it, thereby embodying the revenge of nature over urbanized space." [1] A second edition was later presented at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art in Salt Lake City in 2013. The project series contains photographs of the installation in 1972 and 2013, and drawings and sketches of the tower. Source: [1] Marco Scotini, editor. Il Ritorno Dei Re (1980)
AP207.S2.SS01
Description:
The sub-series documents the exhibition "Il Ritorno Dei Re" designed by Pettena and presented at the Refettorio di Santa Maria Novella, in Florence in 1980. The exhibition presented the heads of the Carolingian kings statues, originally part of the facade of Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, that were removed after the French Revolution and later replaced by new sculptures by Viollet-le-Duc. The statues heads, rediscovered during excavation work in Paris, then toured museums in Europe and in the United States, including in Florence. Pettena's design managed "to evoke, through a cunning use of light, the “presence” of the kings, as the heads stood out as the only illuminated elements in a setting that, precisely because of its imposing character, was kept in semidarkness." [1] The sub-series contains Pettena's draft exhibition proposal, with plans, concept development notes, research and a section of the Refettorio di Santa Maria Novella showing the exhibition space. Description:
The project series documents "Mappe Recinti Itinerari Territori", a rug made of eleven small tapestries hand-woven together. Pettena designed this rug for a special production for "Megalopoli" in 1989. Each of the tapestries represent four subjects: itineraries, territories, maps and enclosures. These subjects "are the means required for the definition of space inside or outside those “magic circles” that are the walls of a city, the beginning of a construction, as the rituals that are performed inside any enclosure take on a unique quality and role, different from whatever lies beyond this boundary."
