Résumé:
In 1664, England decided to invade the Dutch-controlled city of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island. Charles II and his brother, the Duke of York, had dreams of empire, and their archrivals, the Dutch, were in the way. But Richard Nicolls, the military officer who led the English flotilla bent on destruction, changed his strategy once he encountered Peter Stuyvesant, New Netherland’s canny director general. Bristling with vibrant characters, "Taking Manhattan" reveals the founding of New York to be an invention, the result of creative negotiations that would blend the multiethnic, capitalistic society of New Amsterdam with the power of the rising English empire. But the birth of what might be termed the first modern city is also a story of the brutal dispossession of Native Americans and of the roots of American slavery. The book draws from newly translated materials and illuminates neglected histories—of religious refugees, Indigenous tribes, and free and enslaved Africans. "Taking Manhattan" tells the riveting story of the birth of New York City as a center of capitalism and pluralism, a foundation from which America would rise.

Black gold. Liquid sunlight. Texas tea. Oil remains the ur-commodity of our global era, having been distilled from ancient algae and marine life to turn modernity's wheels. Wars are fought over it. Some communities are displaced by its extraction, so that others may reap its benefits. But despite its heated history, few will ever see oil on the ground. Shrouded within a labyrinth of oil fields, pipelines, and manufacturies, it tends to be known only through its magical effects: the thrill of the road, the euphoria of flight, and the metamorphic allure of everything from vinyl records to celluloid film and synthetic clothing. Michael Tondre shows how hydrocarbon became today's pre-eminent power. How did oil come to structure selfhood and social relations? And to what extent is oil not only a commercial product but a cultural one-something shaped by widely imagined dreams and desires? Amid a warming world unleashed by fossil fuels, oil appears as a rich resource for thinking about histories of globalization and technology no less than the energetic underpinnings of literature, film, and art.

Résumé:
The free people of the world are organizing, moving toward what many refer to today as the global revolution. In Gaza, the genocide pins the infinity of time, trapping it within the loneliness of each minute. This fight, and how we wage it, will determine whether we are worthy of the land’s forgiveness, and whether she will grant us passage into the future or consume us all, once and forever. The fourth issue of Al Hayya focuses on Dreams of Liberation. It traces resistance as it takes shape inside the home, in the streets, across borders, and within the self. It examines how art, memory, and the rituals of everyday life carry defiance. It documents the weight and texture of struggle as both personal and collective. This issue features a rare interview with Palestinian revolutionary and PFLP member Leila Khaled. It also includes an in-depth conversation with Françoise Vergès on decolonial feminism and cultural resistance. Photo essays by Maen Hammad, Amal Al-Nakhala, Nader Bahsoun, Sarah Kontar, and Hannah La Follette Ryan document life under pressure, grief, exile, and survival.

Résumé:
Having worked construction for many years, author and illustrator Maxwell Newhouse shows young readers step-by-step how houses are built in this captivating picture book. From drawing up the plans to excavating the site to laying the foundation, the unique and colorful paintings move through the seasons as Max builds the house of his dreams. Watch the framing crew as they build a floor frame to hold the house, raise the walls into place, and make the roof frame. See them install the windows and doors, bricklayers build the outside walls with bricks and mortar, and roofers nail the shingles into place. Follow the plumber as he puts in the water lines, the electrician as he installs the wiring, and the drywaller as he places wallboard on the inside walls. Along come the tile setter, floor layer, cabinetmaker, and painter, who all do their part to make Max’s house beautiful as his mischievous little dog romps through the pages. Finally, when the property has been landscaped with plants, trees, grass, and stones, Max moves into his beloved new home.

Résumé:
The works in The Drawing Book, by artists, architects, sculptors, scientists, filmmakers and thinkers of all descriptions, attest to the versatility and immediacy of drawing. From first thoughts to finely wrought, elaborate artworks, from the lightest sketch in pencil to bold, gallery-wall installations, the medium is shown as an essential vehicle for creativity. The recent prominence of artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Eva Hesse, Chris Ofili, Rachel Whiteread, Ellen Gallagher, and a host of others who use drawing as a final means of expression, is addressed in both the works shown and essays by curators Kate Macfarlane and Katharine Stout, and art historian Charles Darwent. The Drawing Book takes us on a journey through five themes -- measurement, nature, the city, dreams, and the body. Each is richly illustrated with a diverse range of images, from the old masters, through great Modernist pieces by Rodin, Picasso, Matisse, and on to the contemporary artists who are reviving drawing today. The Drawing Book provides a new and unique approach to an age old medium.

Résumé:
'We' takes place in a distant future, where humans are forced to submit their wills to the requirements of the state, under the rule of the all-powerful Benefactor, and dreams are regarded as a sign of mental illness. In a city of straight lines, protected by green walls and a glass dome, a spaceship is being built in order to spearhead the conquest of new planets. Its chief engineer, a man called D-503, keeps a journal of his life and activities: to his mathematical mind everything seems to make sense and proceed as it should, until a chance encounter with a woman threatens to shatter the very foundations of the world he lives in. Written in a highly charged, direct and concise style, Zamyatin's 1921 seminal novel is not only an indictment of the Soviet Russia of his time and a precursor of the works of Orwell and the dystopian genre, but also a prefiguration of much of twentieth-century history and a harbinger of the ominous future that may still lay ahead of us.

Résumé:
As soon as it leaves the protective environment of drafting boards, specialized computer programs, and sophisticated 3-D models, every architectural project is inevitably forced to face the circumstances of real life. In most cases, it's a relatively painless experience, it nevertheless progresses without major problems – but sometimes things go wrong and it fails miserably! What remains are unfulfilled expectations and broken dreams of overly optimistic architects, owners, and clients. With a tongue in cheek approach, this book presents a selection of the most spectacular architectural flops from the 20th century to the present. Each project is described briefly and its circumstances analyzed and extensively documented via photos. The reader is taken to monumental ghost towns in Asia, grotesque remnants of amusement parks, for example in the USA, and a nuclear power plant in Crimea. The author is not aiming to uncover faults and condemn failed projects but rather to contemplate on how difficult and nearly impossible it is to predict the future for any type of endeavor.

Résumé:
In the Austria of the 1960s, the visionary designs of architects and artists garnered international attention. Described as the "Austrian phenomenon," these projects and installations contained the concentrated creativity of the Austrian architectural neo-avant-garde between 1956 and 1973. In Vienna, these avant-garde dreams came to be symbolized by Hans Hollein’s Retti Candle Shop and Hermann Czech’s many cafés and bars, which are still successful today, including the Kleines Café (Little Café), Wunderbar, and Salzamt. The best-known protagonists of this scene include Hans Hollein, Walter Pichler, Raimund Abraham, Coop Himmelblau, Haus-Rucker-Co, Missing Link, and others. The book consists of two parts. The first contains "Documentation" of important publications from the years 1958–1973 in international trade journals like Archigram, Domus, Architectural Record, and Casabella, in which the young architects sought attention for their programs. The second is "Reconstruction," a cross-section of images and texts from publications on the "Austrian phenomenon," elucidated and situated in the context of international architectural history by authors such as Friedrich Achleitner, Bart Lootsma, Stanislaus von Moos, Joseph Rykwert, Anthony Vidler, and others.

Résumé:
The design process of Will Alsop acts as a conduit for the dreams and aspirations of others. Moving from public consultation to the privacy of his painting studio – here ideas are born in the liquidity of paint, the serendipity of collage and the flourish of line, resulting in the avant-garde and vibrant designs that Alsop is particularly well known for. Whether the world approves of these designs or not, does not devalue the creative and artistic process which produces so rich, varied, challenging and inspirational outcomes. Focusing on the refreshing process of design with which Will Alsop engages, Tom Porter reveals and traces the process, from public consultation to private studio, from paint to line to model, and in doing so uncovers a treasure trove of ideas for transforming the process of architectural design. Whether a working architect or a student embarking on the first steps towards creating your own design process, this book offers an insight and example into how engaging with the public, before painting the way into architecture, can offer the most stimulating solutions.

Résumé:
"1968: Radical Italian Design", the newest project from Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari's Toilet Paper in collaboration with the Deste Foundation in Athens, offers an unorthodox, kaleidoscopic walk through the Dakis Joannou collection of Italian Radical Design furniture. Led by avant-garde design firms such as Archizoom, Superstudio, Global Tools and 9999, Radical Design was firmly opposed to the ethics, and indeed the very notion of, "good design" or taste. Toilet Paper's bold, mischievous interpretation of Joannou's collection results in delightful, high-contrast photographs that merge the seductive lines of Radical Design furniture and objects with the curves of the modern-day nymphs cavorting among them. Published as a board book, and named after a year that was pivotal for architecture and design (and, of course, the world at large), "1968" is a collection of dreams and nightmares, an inspiring, eye-popping compendium of colorful, ironic objects and bodies. At once charmingly retro and alarmingly surreal, 1968 includes drawings by one of the Radical Design movement's foremost architects, Alessandro Mendini.
