Mais l'oeuvre paysagère d'Olmsted ne se limite pas à New York : elle a marqué le paysage américain. Grand observateur, civilisateur préoccupé par les questions sociales, Olmsted consacre son existence à défendre l'idée une vie meilleure et plus juste notamment pour les plus démunis. La nature y joue un rôle important. La question du parc est avant tout pour lui une question sociale : le parc est conçu pour "civiliser" la population des villes, la rendre plus apaisée en lui donnant un meilleur cadre de vie.
