Résumé:
Through a lively poststructuralist and postcolonial framework, this book explores issues of preservation, identity, meaning, and change, comparing how the Chandigarh we see today compares to the original plans and drawings. But this book also asks whether Chandigarh’s aesthetics, as well as the ethical tenets on which it was based, are still relevant to urban planning and architecture today. What lessons, if any, does the utopian ethos within modernism offer in the face of the climate crisis, rising authoritarianism, and the digital explosion? Via chapters focused on the hydrologics of the master plan, the symbolism of the Capitol buildings, and the archeology of the unbuilt Museum of Knowledge, this book makes the future-preservation case for Chandigarh as an ‘open’ work, a project that was set up by design to be ‘completed’ by others in times yet to come.

Résumé:
In this volume, the numerous excerpts, preliminary notes, accompanying drawings, and photographs that Le Corbusier produced in connection with his lectures are presented and contextualized by one of the leading experts on the great architect. In them we see modernism at work. Always a great rhetorician and a master at staging his own persona, Le Corbusier takes the arguments and strategies, seminal ideas and most convincing highlights and fuses them into an architectural conception that every advanced architectural position and practice must still come to terms with today.

Résumé:
Colonial Modern: Aesthetics of the Past, Rebellions for the Future is a reader on the relationship between modernism and the project of modernisation in architecture, as well as the intertwining of both in the context of colonialism and decolonisation. It focuses on the dual topics of the relationship between the post-war aesthetic regime of modernism and the project of modernization in architecture and urban planning, as well as on the highly charged intertwining of both in the context of colonialism and decolonization. It is based on the exhibition In the Desert of Modernity: Colonial Planning and After , which traced these connected histories of modern architecture and urban planning in colonial northern Africa and Europe, and was first exhibited in 2008 at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, Germany. The book reflects contemporary research into architectural modernism and colonialism, and utilizes the thesis of “negotiated modernism” to initiate new debates on conceptions of modernism and, inevitably, postmodernism in an interdisciplinary context.

Résumé:
Modernism In-Between explores the historical “in-betweenness” of Yugoslavian modernism and the strategies architects used to mediate different--sometimes directly opposed--concepts of culture and architecture. Surveyed here is a wide range of topics, from city building and state representation, to the typologies of everyday life. Also discussed is the work of Yugoslavia's leading architects, who transformed their in-betweenness into a new quality: Edvard Ravnikar's seamless blending of such varied influences as Joe Plenik, Le Corbusier and Otto Wagner; Bogdan Bogdanovic's war memorials, which filtered deep-seated cultural archetypes through the lens of Surrealism; Juraj Neidhardt's efforts at forging a modern identity for Bosnia based on the vernacular Ottoman heritage; and Vjenceslav Richter's neo-avant-garde experiments, which provided some of the most convincing representations of Yugoslav socialism. Wolfgang Thaler's photographs document these and many other achievements.
