Résumé:
"Armed surfaces" presents DRD Lab's investigations into contemporary reality and a new typology for living. An analysis of transitional moments in daily life instigates a re-examination of Modern Functionalism as an ideology of standardisation and normalcy. The DRD Lab uses theory, spatial and cultural analysis, dynamic measurement, temporal positioning and their collected data to develop a non-standard diagram which exposes the new role of architectural surfaces as 'performing surfaces'. This concept is explored through a series of research-oriented projects which include 'custom mass produced' contemporary housing, a performance induced landscape and an urban frontage. In the diverse projects which she undertakes, Richter seeks to radically reinvent urban design through a game of 'retracing' and 'restitution', founded in the notion that information is what qualifies space. The book explores new solutions to architecture and planning exposing an alternative view of architecture.

Plastic containers from around the world figure in this series by still-life photographer Shinichi Kaneko. The containers originate from 20 cities, the majority of which Kaneko visited himself, making the rounds past DIY stores, mid-sized supermarkets, suburban big-box stores, and more in search of bottles of intriguing shape. He then shot the objects under strong lighting while using filters to minimise surface halation and render a matte finish, a process he describes as akin to puzzling out a chess problem. Yet the results reveal aspects and guises that ordinarily remain hidden from view. The aim of Kaneko’s project is to discover new narratives within readymade products.

Résumé:
Lucien Hervé (b. 1910), one of the great architectural photographers of the twentieth century, collaborated with Le Corbusier from 1949 until the renowned architect died in 1965. Hervé approached his subjects seeking not only to document the buildings he was commissioned to photograph but also, especially, to convey a sense of space, texture, and structure. Through light and shadow, Hervé defined the dialogue between substance and form. By delineating a strong contrast between light and shadow as well as placing emphasis on building details, the photographer was able to communicate the depth of a room, the surface of a wall, or the strength of a building's framework.

This heroically imaginative novel is at once a detective story, an account of a disintegrating marriage, and an excavation of the buried secrets of World War II. In a Tokyo suburb a young man named Toru Okada searches for his wife's missing cat. Soon he finds himself looking for his wife as well in a netherworld that lies beneath the placid surface of Tokyo. As there searches intersect, Okada encounters a bizarre group of allies and cheerfully morbid sixteen-year-old-girl; and an aging war veteran who has been permanentaly changed by the hideous things he witnessed during Japan's forgotten campaign in Machuria.

Drawing is to architects what writing is to authors. Focusing on the creative and inventive significance of drawing for architecture, this book is a paean to the graphic by one of its greatest proponents, Sir Peter Cook. Thematically organised by chapter, Cook joyfully talks us trough drawing as a motive, strategy, vision, image, composition, expression, technique, surface and fantasy. He provides us with amusing perceptive commentary at every turn, drawing our attention to some of the greatest and most intriguing drawings, ranging from Heath-Robinson, Hugh Ferris and Arthur Beresford Pite to Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Ron Herron, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Bernard Tschumi and Lebbeus Woods.

Résumé:
On its surface, the work of Regina Gimenez involves an aesthetic exploration of geometry and colour. Yet it is forged from the observation of what can be described as “subaltern” teaching forms, reflecting an interest in what she calls “popular knowledge”: teaching models based not so much on the established canons but on fictitious registers and domestic resources. This exhibition catalogue delves into the dialogue created between Gimenez and a specific work by Sonia Delaunay (1885–1979), ‘Costume de Sport’, a watercolour which she produced in 1925. As this stimulative meeting shows, Delaunay’s work is and always has been a reference for that of Gimenez.

Résumé:
The American West with its breathtaking landscapes developed within just 200 years into a modern region with cities, parks, mobility, infrastructure and communication. This fundamental change, which took place in four phases – steam, steel, oil and information – was recorded in the middle of the twentieth century on linen postcards which were popular for their brilliant colours and attractive surface structure. Today the cards have become an independent and popular art form combining photography and painting with mass printing. The volume NEW WEST presents 500 of these valuable postcards from the Wagener-Erganian Collection, accompanied by knowledgeable texts about the development of the country and the subjects illustrated.

Résumé:
What is the relation between what we see and what is there? Follow a group of scientists as they set out to approach the boundaries of satellite imaging in the forests of Finland. Their quest: develop an improved interpretation model of satellite data for remote sensing research, allowing surface features to be distinguished beyond what is shown optically. Sheug Yiu interweaves archival imagery, documentary photography, experimental data, and artistic work to acquaint us with the complexity of seeing in the age of algorithms. Not only does this book explore the act of seeing, it also observes the evolution of visual technology in conversation with our perception and surroundings.
