Résumé:
Divided into four sections, respectively, books, scores, records and scattered documents, Sound Pages systematises an important part of the work of John Cage, addressing the various productions of which the American composer was an author, often overturning the traditional component parts and structures. Cage raised the question of making sound something perceptible to the eye: texts, books and music scores, then, become fully visual entities in which the artist tries to juxtapose syntactical links to a new location of characters on the surface of the sheet according to purely visual rules and criteria. The book accompanies an exhibition of the same name at the Museo Internazionale della Musica in Bologna.

For Jungjin Lee, photographing the landscape is an exploration of her own mind – the introspective states of the artist, whose photographic gaze is insistent and transformative. Her latest project Unnamed Road approaches the contested territories of Israel and the West Bank by turning to the landscape. Her black-and-white images are self-contained worlds of stillness and wonder, as Lee searches for something constant in the life of the landscape. Her images suggest that despite the semblance of fluctuation, some fundamental truths do not alter: just as the surface of the ocean is constantly in flux, its depths in fact remain unchanged and enduring.

Résumé:
The first series ever realised by Italian photographer Olivo Barbieri, Flippers derives from his discovery of an abandoned, derelict pinball machine factory, and marks the starting point of his observations on visualising the superficial, which would lead to his artistic engagement with the uncertainty of the world’s surface. The fragmented pinball machines act as a cultural reminder, a throwback to the flashing momentum of the 1960s and ’70s, with rock music, science fiction, movie stars, and flower power. Published in its entirety for the first time, the pinball project was a formative experience for the photographer in his early years. Includes an interview with Barbieri and Francesco Zanot.

Résumé:
The paintings of Enoc Perez are instantly recognizable, both for his technique and his subject matter. The Puerto Rico-born, New York-based artist layers pictures selected from postcards, downloaded images, or his own polaroids, by pressing paper backed with wet oilstick monochromes against a canvas or paper, and drawing on its surface. The drawing is peeled away to leave a layer of printed paint. The paintings' subjects are modernist buildings, many iconic, like the Chrysler Building or the United Nations headquarters. Far from architectural renderings, these luminous, intriguing works ingeniously denude the images of both their privacy and their publicly iconic significance. For Perez, the painting itself is the final statement.

Résumé:
A meditation on the dilemmas and desires for home that combines the writings of art critic and cultural historian Rebecca Solnit with painter Stefan Kürten’s lush images of domestic interiors, buildings and landscapes. Solnit reflects on emotional privatization, real-estate fetishism, and aesthetic pleasure, while Kürten’s paintings of stale bourgeois interiors and suburban homes project a dogged attempt to make life perfect, at least on the surface. His armchairs, teapots and planter boxes suggest that we are living in a peculiar state of safety and bliss. Together, the text and images question the equation of ideal houses with ideal lives, the images that shape our perception of childhood, and our notion of a fulfilled adulthood.

Drained by a half-dozen major watersheds, cut by a network of deep ravines and fronting on a Great Lake, Toronto is dominated by water. Like most cities, though, Toronto has mismanaged its water, from the decades-long transformation of the citys creeks into sewersheds to the alteration of Torontos waterfront. Recently, the trend of fettering Torontos water and putting it underground has been countered by persistent citizen-led efforts to recall and restore the citys surface water. In HTO: Torontos Water From Lake Iroquois to Taddle Creek and Beyond, 30 contributors examine the ever-changing interplay between nature and culture, and call into question the citys past, present and future engagement with water.
