Résumé:
AV monographs dedicates each issue to a theme involving a city, a country, a tendency or an architect, featuring essays by prominent scholars and commentaries on built works and projects illustrated in detail. With edorial text "The fatigue of Europe" by Luis Fernandez-Galiano : (...) " Europeans vaunt about their tenacious experimental tradition in the field of housing, but a distracted review of the latest residential projects leaves a bittersweet aftertaste. Apart from some odd technical displays and a few typological novelties, the majority of the projects presented in this issue stand out for their geometric rigor, their material sophistication and their compositional elegance. Rather than a product of the Welfare State, they are a consequence of the welfare of the State – promoter of a large number of them – and also of the social prosperity made evident by the boom of private real-estate development. Examples of the refinement of the European elites, these works also bear witness to the creative fatigue of a continent that finds itself demographically aged, economically less and less competitive, and with a knowledge industry that continues to lag behind the universities and laboratories of the American north, and now also in comparison with the dynamic surge of Asia.(...)"

Résumé:
Over the past century, American demographics and social norms have shifted dramatically. More people are living alone, marrying later in life, and having smaller families. At the same time, their lifestyles are changing, whether by choice or by force, to become more virtual, more mobile, and less stable. But despite the ways that today's America is different and more diverse, housing still looks stuck in the 1950s. In ''Brave new home,'' Diana Lind shows why a country full of single-family houses is bad for us and our planet, and details the new efforts underway that better reflect the way we live now, to ensure that the way we live next is both less lonely and more affordable. Lind takes readers into the homes and communities that are seeking alternatives to the American norm, from multi-generational living, in-law suites, and co-living to microapartments, tiny houses, and new rural communities. Drawing on Lind's expertise and the stories of Americans caught in or forging their own paths outside of our cookie-cutter housing trap, ''Brave new home'' offers a diagnosis of the current American housing crisis and a radical re-imagining of future possibilities.

Résumé:
In this radical book, architects, historians, and theorists survey the inventive, low cost work being done in obscure places to make architecture into a force for sustainable growth and social justice. The efforts are Utopian not charitable in aim. This new breed of architect-activists is endeavoring to diversify if not reinvent their profession by engaging in an "exchange" of ideas, techniques, and visions of right living with people almost always relegated to silence and invisibility. The book opens with a range of theoretical essays, each specially commissioned, from "the site of the social" in architecture to John Hejduk's legacy, as well as five ways to change the world with Chris Marker's films. Subsequent essays form a field guide to "exchange" projects from Harlem to Port-au-Prince to Serekunda and Indore, a few still unbuilt, all virtually unknown to students of architecture. Jae Cha, Peter Clegg, Simón Vélez, and famed modernist Balkrishna Doshi demonstrate the benefits of easily found and/or scavenged materials, including bamboo. Other essays present varied alternatives to ghettoizing large groups in bleak housing complexes and urban "deserts" in architecture.

Résumé:
Utopia tends to generate a bad press - regarded as impracticable, perhaps nostalgic, or contradictory when visions of a perfect world cannot accommodate the change that is necessary to a free and self-organizing society. But people from diverse backgrounds are currently building a new society within the old, balancing literal and metaphorical utopianism, and demonstrating plural possibilities for alternative futures and types of settlement. Thousands of such places exist around the world, including intentional communities, eco-villages, permaculture plots, religious and secular retreats, co-housing projects, self-build schemes, projects for low-impact housing, and activist squats in urban and rural sites. This experience suggests, however, that when planning and design are not integral to alternative social formations, the modern dream to engineer a new society cannot be realized. The book is structured in four parts. In part one, literary and theoretical utopias from the early modern period to the nineteenth-century are reconsidered. Part two investigates twentieth-century urban utopianism and contemporary alternative settlements focusing on social and environmental issues, activism and eco-village living. Part three looks to wider horizons in recent practices in the non-affluent world, and Part four reviews a range of cases from the author’s visits to specific sites. This is followed by a short conclusion in which a discussion of key issues is resumed. This book brings together insights from literary, theoretical and practical utopias, drawing out the characteristics of groups and places that are part of a new society. It links today’s utopian experiments to historical and literary utopias, and to theoretical problems in utopian thought.

Résumé:
Veruska Vasconez is a Brazilian architect and academic whose work spans practice, research, and teaching. This volume gathers seventeen voices – architects, historians, practitioners – who illuminate how housing, design, and infrastructure act as mediators for the most urgent challenges of our time. These essays are not isolated reflections but rather interwoven inquiries into architecture’s capacity as a form of social imagination, a vehicle for justice, and a medium for re-envisioning urban futures. The collection emerges from the graduate seminar Housing, Infrastructure, and Transportation at the University of Miami, originally developed by architect Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk.
