Ten "Reports from Coast to Coast" tell the stories of others who have planted their own edible front yards in towns and cities across the country. In addition to essays by landscape architect and scholar Diana Balmori, edible-landscaping pioneer Rosalind Creasy, bestselling author and sustainable-food advocate Michael Pollan and artist and writer Lesley Stern, this edition features updated text by Haeg (including his observations on the Obama White House vegetable garden); a contribution from Mannahatta author Eric W. Sanderson; and Growing Power founder, MacArthur Fellow and urban farmer Will Allen's never-before-published Declaration of the Good Food Revolution. This is not a comprehensive how-to book, nor a showcase of impossibly perfect gardens. The book is both a catalogue and a special edition of our series of "Van Alen Reports," the publication both documents the exhibit and expands on it with personal essays, articles and interviews. The point of the exhibition was not to compare catastrophes, but to compare, contrast, and try to explicate and understand initiatives, projects, plans, and actions that took place after the bomb, the earthquake, the war. After that, what worked, what would they do differently, what mattered right away, what mattered for the long-term? In October, the Institute put out a call for ideas for the exhibit. Students, designers, planners, artists, professors, photographers, public officials and a wide range of respondents from around the world were generous in suggesting places, projects, issues, and designs that were telling for the future of New York. From this response and ongoing research, the Institute chose to focus on specific processes and projects in seven cities. In Beirut, a public art installation that progressed through the city was a first step in reclaiming its war-torn districts, and the Lebanese capital has continued not only with master plans and major new developments, but also with works such as the Garden of Forgiveness, grappling with a hard history to contemplate. In Berlin, a center for information about the city and its reconstruction rose above the ruins of the Berlin Wall, half a century after the city had been devastated and divided. In San Francisco, an earthquake left the elevated highway downtown in such precarious decision that the city decided to tear it down-and implement a long-held dream of reopening the city to the waterfront. In Kobe, where an earthquake resulted not only in billions of dollars of damage to infrastructure, but also in a terrible loss of life, architects responded with an outpouring of energy to survey the damage and construct innovative emergency housing, proving the old adage that necessity is the mother of invention. In addition, they strove to understand the disaster, building a museum about, and at, the geological fault that brought down so much of their city. Manchester had a terrorist attack in the mid-1990s, and rebuilt its center city better than before, as well as setting up an institute for the study of cities around the world, to better understand that the life of the city and its public realm can not be taken for granted. So, too, did Oklahoma City, where a public process led to an international design competition for a memorial, and the city has rebuilt itself around it. Sarajevo, after years of civil war, pulled together its citizens through restoring the landmarks of their public life.

Barcelona-based Portuguese artist Carlos Bunga (Porto, 1976) is well known for his large scale installations in which he often uses fragile, perishable materials to build architectural structures, which he sometimes later destroys in performances or even before the exhibition opens. Built over weeks, his site-specific projects are made in direct dialogue with the surrounding architecture. This publication documents the special commission made for the Sonae/Serralves Project in 2012 for which the artist created a very large structure for the entrance hall of the Serralves Museum emphasizing the space’s verticality and functionality, in dialogue with Álvaro Siza’s architecture. Illustrated with Bunga’s projects in other artistic contexts, the book features texts by João Fernandes and Ricardo Nicolau (exhibition curators), Adam Budak (curator at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C.), Marta Jecu (writer and researcher at CICANT Institute, Universidade Lusófona, Lisbon) and an interview conducted by María Inez Rodríguez (former chief curator at Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City) offering comprehensive insights into Carlos Bunga’s work.

This book revisits the history of modernism in architecture through the legacy of one of its protagonists, Armenian architect Gabriel Guevrekian (c. 1900–70). Born in Istanbul, Guevrekian grew up in Tehran and then moved to Vienna to study architecture at the Kunstgewerbeschule; he later worked with Oskar Strnad, Josef Hoffmann, Adolf Loos, Henri Sauvage and Robert Mallet-Stevens. Among Guevrekian’s famous designs are the Cubist Garden for Villa Noailles in France and two houses for the Vienna Werkbund exhibition. Before he turned 30, Guevrekian was recognized as one of the protagonists of the European avant-garde in Paris. During the 1930s, Guevrekian spent a few years in Iran designing public buildings. Later, after the World War II, he took up teaching positions in Europe and America. All of Guevrekian’s various pursuits, and the homes and nationalities he held in Asia, Europe and then America, led the architect to a serial adoption of personae. Guevrekian was an architect, an avant-gardist and a cosmopolitan. He made every discipline meaningful, every city central, every period epochal, simply by his own very tangible engagement with it.

Among Guevrekian’s famous designs are the Cubist Garden for Villa Noailles in France and two houses for the Vienna Werkbund exhibition. Before he turned 30, Guevrekian was recognized as one of the protagonists of the European avant-garde in Paris. During the 1930s, Guevrekian spent a few years in Iran designing public buildings. Later, after the World War II, he took up teaching positions in Europe and America. All of Guevrekian’s various pursuits, and the homes and nationalities he held in Asia, Europe and then America, led the architect to a serial adoption of personae. Guevrekian was an architect, an avant-gardist and a cosmopolitan. He made every discipline meaningful, every city central, every period epochal, simply by his own very tangible engagement with it.
