Résumé:
Le Corbusier and Sardinian-born sculptor Costatino Nivola met in 1946 in New York. The Franco-Swiss architect was working with a team around Oscar Niemeyer on the project for the United Nations headquarters, the artist had been living there in exile since 1939. Their meeting marked the beginning of a life-long friendship between the two, with Le Corbusier sharing Nivola's Greenwich Village studio while working on the United Nations project and, in 1950, creating two murals in the kitchen of Nivola's East Hampton home. The artist put together a collection of some 300 drawings, six paintings, and six sculptures by his architect friend which today are held in various places across Europe and America. This book tells the story of the collection and explores its significance, thus contributing to understand the evolution of Le Corbusier's visual art and its impact on the reception of his work in America.

Résumé:
During the 1920s and 1930s, proponents of Soviet architecture looked to various principles within the human sciences in their efforts to formulate a methodological and theoretical basis for their modernist project. ''Architecture of life'' delves into the foundations of this transdisciplinary and transnational endeavor, analyzing many facets of their radical approach and situating it within the context of other modernist movements that were developing concurrently across the globe. Examining the theories advanced by El Lissitzky, Moisei Ginzburg, and Nikolay Ladovsky, as well as those of their lesser-known colleagues, this illuminating study demonstrates how Soviet architects of the interwar period sought to mitigate Fordist production methods with other, ostensibly more human-oriented approaches that drew on the biological and psychological sciences. Envisioning the built environment as innately connected to social evolution, their methods incorporated aspects of psychoanalysis, personality theory, and studies in spatial perception, all of which were integrated into an ideology that grounded functional design firmly within the attributes of the individual. A comprehensive overview of the ideals that permeated its expanded project, ''Architecture of life'' explicates the underlying impulses that motivated Soviet modernism, highlighting the deep interconnections among the ways in which it viewed all aspects of life, both natural and manufactured.

Résumé:
This title was first published in 2003: Modernist architecture claimed to be the 'international style' but the relationship between modernism and the new dispositions of nations and nationalities which have succeeded the old European empires remains obscure. In this, the first book to examine the interactions between modern architecture, imperialism and post-imperialism, Mark Crinson looks at the architecture of the last years of the British Empire, and during its prolonged dissolution and aftermath. Taking a number of case studies from Britain, Ghana, Hong Kong, Iran, India and Malaysia, he investigates the ambitions of the people who commissioned the buildings, the training and role of architects, and the interaction of the architecture and its changing social and cultural contexts. This book raises questions about the nature of modernism and its roles that look far beyond empire and towards the post-imperial.
